2021-2022 KenPom Rankings Thread

Okay so not a lot of change today.  Maryland takes a pretty big step down and Michigan State moves up to #17.  Nebraska moves up to #92, and all of the Big Ten teams are now in the top 100.  The Big Ten is still the top rated conference but after this week and our disastrous performance in the Gavitt Games our lead on the Big 12 is very slim.  Maybe we can turn this around some in the Big Ten/ACC challenge.  Other than that, not much to say.  We got the expected win last night.  Lather, rinse and repeat.

In the other teams of interest category:

Colorado drops to #50 and San Jose State moves up to #322.

Okay, Here we go!

Michigan and Michigan State drop a bit.  Purdue is legit.  We got another expected win yesterday.  Lather, rinse and repeat.

With good Verge, we may be a top 50 team.  With bad Verge we are easily the worst team in the conference.  It's unsettling to have so much of your success ride on just one individual.

In the other teams of interest category:

Colorado drops to #51, Colorado State beats another cupcake and moves up to #53 and San Jose State stays at #322.

Wow big drop!  We are now dead last in the Big Ten and back in the triple digits.  Can't say it's not deserved though, but it stinks just as bad.

Wisconsin makes a big jump up and Illinois plummets to double digits.  Rutgers is definitely going to be racing us to the bottom it looks like...can we hold 'em off?  We'll see.

In the other teams of interest category:

Colorado drops to #59 and San Jose State moves up a couple to #320.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone, let's hope that Sunday's update is a lot happier than this one.

I forgot to do an update after the South Dakota game.  Lots of changes in the pecking order in the Big Ten, but everybody's ranking remains largely the same.  Minnesota is undefeated and we are still ahead of them, so we got that going for us, I guess.

In the other teams of interest category:

Colorado moves up to #57 and San Jose State moves up to #311.

The next 4 updates will likely be pretty depressing, but we press onward.  Okay.

Here we go!

More shuffling, but not a lot of change in the rankings.  Our loss to Indiana was almost identical to the expected margin, but Creighton and NC State losing did us no favors so we are once again below 100 and in dead last in the Big Ten.  We're gonna play a lot of games in the Big Ten against teams of Indiana's (or worse) caliber and if we can make even a pedestrian 3 point percentage in those games we'll always have a shot.  The low 20's, however, is not gonna get it done.

Ken has revised our predicted win total again now to 11-20, and that's about all I can say about today's update.  I guess the silver lining is we will definitely provide a welcome night off for anyone who is playing us from now on.  Will certainly help teams along as they battle it out in an otherwise brutally tough Big Ten conference.  (Wonder what that feels like?)  I'm sure Minnesota, Penn State, Michigan State and Maryland are pissed they only get us once on their schedule this year.

While we moved up one spot to #133 last night immediately after the win, overnight we dropped down to #137.  Three spots lower than we were before the game.  Classic case of how letting off the gas at the end of a game to let a lesser opponent claw the final score back to respectability can hurt you.  Our guys need to learn that when you are up by 21 points that's when you step on their neck and put them down for good!

NC State is dropping off a cliff.  Wonder if they're having issues with the flu or covid or if the NCAA sanctions have broken their spirit or what.  They were #61 when we played them.

Full disclosure.  As this looks to most likely be our last day after a win for at least a month, these KenPom updates may be...let's just say, sparse...for the time being.  I have a lot of trouble mustering the energy to keep these up for this team this year.

NC State's spirits were probably broken when a trash team took them to 4 OTs.

NC State is my 2nd favorite team/school, having attended grad school there.  Still live in NC and watch them quite often.

No need to wonder, they just aren't very good.  They're a lower third ACC team capable of an occasional upset but more often likely to lose or play down to a lesser opponent.  IMO, the relative rankings for them and Nebraska are probably about right.

That being said, they did lose their big rim protecting, shot-blocking machine Bates early in the season.  With him playing, I don't think Nebraska even sniffs OT, they probably have a couple of more wins right now and might be middle-of-the-pack ACC quality.

I noticed that Omaha beat Western Illinois last night.  So does that mean the 2-11 Mavs are better than the Huskers?

We are a must not lose no matter where you play them team.  Unfortunately.

We’ve fallen all the way to 219 in the NET standings.  That means we’re a Quad 3 loss if you play us in Lincoln and a Quad 4 if you play us at your place.  So either way, we’re a team you can lose to if you have NCAA hopes.

We’re also only 21 spots away (240) from becoming a Q4 loss no matter whether you place us here or there.   Now that is sad.  We’re smack dab in the middle of San Diego and Cal Baptist in the NET.  We’ve got a long way to go to get to bubble territory………

By the way, can anyone look up what the worst end-of-season Kenpom ranking has been for any Big Ten team in the last, say, 10 years?

How about worst of any Power 5 team?

I have a feeling we're nearing historic levels of futility.

Eddie Jordan's last year they hit 279.  Losing by 15 to Nebraska seemed to increase that ranking as they were 290 coming into that game.
