Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-10) vs #21 Wisconsin Badgers (14-6)

Time: 8:40 p.m.

Arena: PBA

Broadcast:  BTN

Wisconsin Info

Head Coach: Greg Gard
Location: Madison, WI
Conference: B1G
Nickname: Badgers

Mascot: Bucky Badger
Line: Wisconsin by 11

Typical Rotation Depth: 9

KenPom rank: 11

Key Injuries: None

Scheduling: Due to Nebraska being out with Covid the Huskers are playing 5 games in 9 days. This is game 3 of that stretch and due to NCAA rest rules Nebraska couldn't practice on Tuesday.

Players to watch:   Nate Reuvers

The Senior is another in the line of mobile Wisconsin centers who can make 3s though has struggled in conference play. Additionally he's an excellent shot blocker. This Wisconsin team shares the ball well but Potter and Reuvers tend to take to take the most shots.

Players to watch:       Micah Potter

Potter is complimentary to Reuvers as he's more girth and rebounding to Reuvers' rim protecting. Like everyone from Wisconsin he shoots 3s and also does damage drawing contact inside.

Tyler Wahl has replaced Reuvers in the starting lineup and Wisconsin likes to play with just one of their big men on the court at a time.

  • Brad Davison is like that old joke where someone lists off this great list of accomplishments and then the punchline is bemoaning the fact that they're noted for something terrible.  Davison is excellent on defense, can bail Wisconsin out when the shot clock is running down and by all accounts is a great teammates.  We just know him as the guy who flops and hits people in the junk.
  • Tyler Wahl doesn't shoot a ton but they go in
  • Trice is your typical Wisconsin don't turn the ball over/make shot clock beating 3s PG and excels in the pick and roll.
  • Ford functions as a David Rivers type of glue guy, splitting time between the 3 and 4 as necessary.
  • Senior guard Trevor Anderson spells Trice at PG
  • True Freshman wing Johnathan Davis has been impressive and has grabbed plenty of minutes coming off the bench at the 2 and 3

The Skinny:

Last time out Nebraska rock fought its way to a 7-3 lead in Wisconsin after the first 10 minutes. The Badgers took control with a pair of runs in the middle, coasting to a 67-53 win.  The Badgers did a good job keying on Teddy Allen with Allen fouling out after 25 minutes on the court.

Wisconsin is built on getting back and defending, guarding the 3pt line and funneling you towards their shot blocking. This is a get right game in terms of ball handling for Nebraska as Wisconsin doesn't apply a lot of ball pressure. Between this and Wisconsin shooting poorly on the road, you could see a path by which a Nebraska team could win if they find their stroke back.  The likely scenario though is that Wisconsin locks down the Huskers who struggle to hit 50.

Prediction: Wisconsin 72 - Nebraska 56

I'd never really looked at Wisconsin's roster closely as to where their players' hometowns are, but other than Ford, it appears they're all from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Ohio. A real Midwestern, home-grown powerhouse.

Similarly, other than Garza (D.C.) and freshman Ogundele (England), Iowa's roster is made up of guys from Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

Dang.

It's nice to think of Nebraska playing a get right game, if only in one aspect of the game.
