Two more Big Ten conference games, two more losses. They may count the same, but not all losses look the same.

You know what sucks?  Jumping 9 spots in the standings but still losing ground to KenPom.  His system is insanely accurate.  What a brain that man has!

I am not sure, but if you drop the score from the Doane game (which KenPom didn't predict and I just had to make up a score myself) I would be willing to bet he'd be even closer to the top of the HHCC standings.

It's the consistency that is so impressive.  Every year since his computer got added to the standings, he's been top 5.  If I remember correctly he even won a year.  It just amazes me that his computer algorithm is better than a bunch of people that actually watch all the games.

Actually, if you remove human emotion and just crunch numbers, it's not surprising at all that a computer is more accurate than humans who cannot detach themselves from fandom and koolaid!

its advantage is the lack of emotion and reliance on pure data.  Us fans are almost universally susceptible to want to hit that jackpot (i.e. call the major upset) and more often than not it's what throws things off.  If we hit it once, chances are then that we somehow think we've cracked the code or are somehow smarter than everyone, and we are generally inclined to think we can do it again.  (but we can't, not consistently at least)

If we miss on the first try, then we're going to keep chasing, looking for that one big hit that will get us back in the game.  (again, almost always we can't)

The secret to the KenPom sauce is the sample size.  On any given game, KenPom is usually not among the best scores.  Often, in fact, he's middle of the pack.  If the season were fewer than ten games like a football season for instance, then the fans would probably ruthlessly crush KenPom in this game.  But it's not.

It's kind of why I chose to start posting Ken's predictions in this game, to illustrate just how difficult it is to do well in this game (unless you're a computer). 😁

Which is why @HuskerFever is correct in actively rooting against KenPom (and honestly I kind of do too) and it's also why I don't expect any prize to be given to KenPom (other than my own personal satisfaction) if he wins.  It is, in fact, against the spirit of the game and I only post his predictions and use his score as a sort of measuring stick against the rest of the players.

If you finish the season above Ken, I consider you to be among the most astute of prognosticators.  Because as has been demonstrated in the past, it's damn hard to do.

...or what @Nebrasketball1979 just said more succinctly while I was typing up my long winded answer.  🤣

Oh, I totally get the human bias aspect.  We are fans, after all.  But how often do we discuss a team's mental makeup, and how they will respond to adversity, and what players seem to be lacking confidence, etc...and how all those things will effect the performance on the court.  The players aren't a bunch of zeroes and ones, they're human beings (and young developing ones, at that).

And yet KenPom keeps plugging along and predicting accurately.  It makes me think that reading a team's psychology just isn't as important as we make it out to be.  Good teams win and bad teams lose.

Another aspect is that KenPom doesn't think in terms of wins and loses...it compares adjusted efficiencies with home court advantage factored in The actual win or loss is a byproduct of no consequence.

Do you know if KenPom is factoring in home court advantage this year since there isn't any fans?  Well, I guess that's just a Big 10 rule too, so I am sure that he still is...

It still has to be in there as there are plenty of arenas with no crowd pre-covid and things like staying in a hotel and travelling and using a different type ball matter. The question is to whether or not he is over-factoring it.

Plus, Penn State's home court advantage, pre-and-post COVID is exactly the same.
