Badgers

Hello, Nebrasketball fans. I come in peace wanting to discuss your upcoming game tomorrow. I saw a little bit of discussion in the pinned thread, so if pulling this out is not kosher, I apologize.

If you haven't seen the Badgers this year, they returned all 5 starters who are all seniors. Not a single player made first or second team of the B1G last year, even though they were co-champions, a testament to the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. 3 bench players play a lot - another senior, who's the backup PG, and a sophomore and a freshman.

They've shot lights out from 3 the last two games (60% combined) against Louisville and Loyola, so they may be due to come back to earth a little.  The number of shots taken is pretty even among the starters (I think each of them average between 8 and 12 points). 7 of the 8 in the rotation are excellent 3 point shooters. And, like every UW team for 25 years, they don't turn over the ball much.

Defense has been its normal good self, always man-to-man. UW - somewhat surprisingly - is one of the leaders in blocked shots in the country. Reuvers just became the school's all-time leader. They do not cause a lot of turnovers, though.

The pace will be, um, deliberate. Usually, that's because UW takes its time on offense, but this year, the defensive possessions have actually been slower (so far) than the offense.

Downsides: they are not excellent at offensive rebounds, and the bigs have been in a fair amount of foul trouble. They got beat at Marquette on a missed FT tipin at the buzzer, but the story of that game was that Marquette got UW in foul trouble and had a huge advantage at the FT line. As a Badger fan, this is the greatest concern in league play because of all the great big men.

Ask me anything.

Welcome!  We love to talk hoops and, despite our... umm... not so great basketball history, you’ll probably find one of the most knowledgeable, down to earth message boards around.

A few things to note....

1.  The color blue isn’t worn worn on Saturday in the fall.  That’s Husker football day.  Even if Creighton has a basketball game.

2. You have Davidson who likes to... take charges.  We have McGowens who jumps in front of guys running down the floor.  We won’t be mad at Brad if you don’t get mad at Trey.  Deal?

3.  In actual basketball talk... we’ve got a completely new team but don’t take em for granted.  The Big 10 is going to be a slog either way, but this is not last years Nebraska.  We’ve got a true NBA potential guy starting at point and some nice pieces.

4.  We just now got our freshman center and grad transfer 3 point specialist eligible.  So if your like “who is this guy making a bunch of 3’s” just know he probably played his first game last week.

5.  We have three losses.  We were up 10 on Nevada in the 2nd half and lost.  We played GA Tech tight for 30 minutes.  We played Creighton really right for 25 minutes.  Despite the record, we should be about 5-2 or 6-1.

Just FYI, there's no (2nd) d in Davison (well, no 3rd d if you count his first name) 🙂. He does have a reputation.

Is Ben Carlson injured or just out of the rotation right now?

Very good question. They said he was injured during the telecast against Louisville. He had been the 9th man in the early games, and doing fairly well against the inferior opponents. He did not do so well against the bigs of Marquette, however, and hasn't played a lot since. He seems like he needs to hit the weight room a bit, which is not uncommon for a freshman big. We have a second, even skinnier, freshman 7-footer from MN named Crowl who can eat 5-6 minutes, if needed. Both of those guys have bright futures, but they're playing behind experienced and talented bigs, and most opponents go small, so there is less need to go to the bench for a 3rd guy who can play C (or 4th or 5th guy that can play the 4). UW goes defense-first, so Gard looks to see if they can guard one of the opponents' players before looking to take advantage offensively.

Why do you guys over at buckyville have to be so, um, unsavory?  Especially when it comes to discussing anything University of Nebraska related?  What did we do to raise your ire so much?

Do we not lose to you regularly enough and by enough points that you can just stop the hate?  Or is it just an unfortunate side effect to living in Wisconsin?  I've been there once and it seems like an okay enough place, but I guess maybe the winters are so bad you just become naturally grouchy and unlikeable?

I dunno.  Maybe you guys should just appreciate what you have (which is currently arguably the best overall athletic departments in the country...possibly the history of college athletics) and not feel the need to be complete assholes to the rest of us squirrels just tryin' to get a nut.

Thanks.  I hope you guys lose all the rest of your games for eternity.

I respect the heck out of the Wisconsin basketball program. Dick Bennett is probably the most under-appreciated college coach there ever was. His creations of the packline defense and mover-blocker offense changed the way most coaches coach. I think he and Dean Smith are the two guys who have had the greatest influence on the way college game is played. Bo Ryan is also an underrated coach.

I’m always curious about outsider’s perspectives of our teams. Since Nebraska has joined the Big Ten, who are some Husker players that stand out in your mind?

Pick one... Kaminsky or Happ?  Jordan Taylor or Devin Harris?

Kaminsky, and it's not all that close. No swipe at Happ intended as he was great for what he was, but Frank was NPOY.

The second pair is harder, but you have to go Devin, who was clearly the more talented player. However, I had Jordan Taylor as my avatar for several years.

As for Husker players that stood out, I don't remember many before you joined the league - Tyronn Lue, but no one else springs to mind. Petteway is the first guy I think of, though, and wasn't there a Shields with him? Also Ed Morrow because he ended up with Marquette.

Sorry if my lack of knowledge about the Husker history is < your knowledge of Badgers'.

Well, the opposite of love is indifference, not hate. I hate every B1G team to varying degrees except one whose colors are red and white and is situated in the state capitol named after a president. And is on a lakefront....

Also realize that people over 50 like me grew up with teams that sucked for decades, including our pro teams like the Packers. We appreciate where we are now. The people under about 40 have a different perspective.

Embrace that we are the 'bad boy heel' of the B1G

Interesting comment from the Badger board....

There's nothing about us that says 'bad boy heel' to them.  They mock us (whether deserved or not).

It's not hate so much as it's downright disrespect and mockery.  Distasteful and very poor sportsmanship in my opinion.  Wisconsin and their hyper-entitled fanbase can burn for all I care.

I thought you might say Petteway and Shields. They were the two best players on our last tournament team (2014). The last regular season game that year, against Wisconsin, was arguably the most important/exciting game in the last 20+ years for us.

Well, I'm not gonna win over 49r...

It does give me a little jolt to hear our fanbase described as hyper-entitled. Cue Barry Manilow: "LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT" (note the correct usage of the full colon).

A sense of humor and thick skin are wonderful things... (note the use of an ellipsis)

Thanks for making your way over. I've enjoyed both of my trips to Madison and have said multiple times to my buddies that if I didn't graduate from Nebraska, then Wisconsin would be the school I'd want to attend as an undergrad.

Most of us have thick skin and can only laugh at the current state of our athletics program. But we know that at least in basketball things are trending upwards. My question is why in the world would a team like Wisconsin not make fun of us to no end at the moment? Not only did we think we were going to enter the conference and take it by storm in football initially, our current head coach doubled down on it when he was hired.

Meanwhile, we've beaten Bucky in football once out of nine times since 2011 (and 4-12 against them in bball since joining). That is downright hilariously bad. We're easy to make fun of because we have such a passionate fan base, yet we lose. Once we start winning meaningfully and consistently things will change. We're just waiting for that to happen haha.
