2020-2021 KenPom Rankings Thread

Good news everyone, the KenPom rankings (finally) dropped overnight!  I know everyone has been waiting with baited breath to see this thread appear in the Haymarket Hardwood, and now the wait is finally over!

Because of all the chaos since March, I'm going to have to start off slightly different than in years past but I'll do my best to keep thing as uniform as possible.

Like before I will start with last years season starting rankings (in parenthesis) then the season ending rankings in bold in the first post.   Additionally, I would've normally have 2020 NCAA Tournament teams color coded in red and 2020 NIT Tournament teams color coded in blue.  Since there was no 2020 postseason I will leave the color coding off.

In my second post I will do the same thing but with the offseason rankings changes. (Final 2020 rankings in parenthesis then this year's starting rankings in bold)

You'll notice that there is only Big Ten teams and Georgia Tech in the initial rankings.  Since we don't have a schedule these are the only known opponents at the moment.  This aspect of this years thread will be fluid, as we all probably expect it to be by now.

Finally, if you notice any errors please let me know.  I think I got everything updated right here but I've been pretty distracted at work.  Also, don't forget to click here to see all the previous years' KenPom threads (I highly recommend going back through them, they're always fun to read).  Here we go!

And now for the start of season rankings for 2020-2021.

A few things jump right out to me, namely Iowa Wisconsin Northwestern and Illinois making big leaps forward, while Penn State and Maryland taking big steps back.  Georgia Tech, our only confirmed non-con opponent at the moment is starting off slightly lower than they finished last season.

Nebraska did also jump up quite a bit, but we're still in the triple digits.  Hopefully we can finish the season in double digits.   Here we go!

  • 2 weeks later...

Pomeroy updated our schedule and the rankings have changed ever so slightly so I thought I'd do an update today.

You'll notice that Iowa and Michigan State swapped spots, Minnesota jumped up 5 to #30 and Nebraska and Georgia Tech both move up one spot and Michigan moved up two.  Otherwise things remained mostly static.

Here we go!

I mean-- I know it's formulas and whatnot, but... COME ON NOW.... our highest chance to win a conference game is 34% at home against Penn State?

Been tryna say all week...you have to understand that the Big Ten is gonna be REALLY good this year and we are...well...not.  Pretty much every team in the Big Ten except *maybe* Northwestern is marking down Nebraska as a win.  In ink.

The big 10 is going to be tough but we do not know if we are not good yet at all. Fred’s attitude is much different than last year so I am optimistic we will be a solid team this year. No one knows for sure but I hate assuming we will be bad.

Well, Northwestern doesn't need to write it down, because Pomeroy doesn't even have us listed as playing them.

We are an unknown quantity for sure, but no way we go without a W in conference. JMO, but I think we are going to be good this year.

We moved up 9 spots after today's win.  I wanted to get an update posted this afternoon even though there are a number of results still to come in today.  It's doubtful there will be much change, but probably some.  This will be the first update with our complete (as it stands for now) schedule.

1-0 baby, Here we go!

I hope the Big Ten utterly destroys their non-con opponents. I want it to have 14 teams in the top 80-90 when they start beating up on each other. Any game against a Big Ten foe at that point will move us up. Wins even better.

You may get your wish.  Illinois is leading by 60(!!!) in their game with 11 minutes left to play.  Ohio State has a 30 point lead at about the same spot in their game, and Maryland is leading Old Dominion by 23 with just under 8 minutes to go.

Honestly, I think McNeese state played better than the #328 team in the country today. Yeah, we beat them by 45, but still. With that Cooks Housing guy (I hear he cooks with butane) able to get shots off from anywhere within about 25 feet, they'll be able to cause some teams some problems. I bet they end up in the top half of their conference this year. They went 10-10 in league last year and return 3 starters and 2 of their top 3 scorers, including Cooks Housing. They might be in the 300s, but my eyeball test says they're high 200s at worst and would have given us some fits a year ago.

Illinois is gonna get 120 points today.  They're at 100 with 7:40 left to go.

Coming into the season I thought their only weakness would be three point shooting. Well, they made 17 threes today (their stud freshman made 6). Really impressed with that team. Ayo is going to elevate to superstardom this year.
