NCAA Basketball Scholarships Limits

The NCAA requires universities and colleges at the D1 level to offer only ‘full’ scholarships in men’s and women’s basketball. Men’s programs are restricted to 13 scholarships while women’s program rosters have 15 full scholarship players. An interesting point for you to know about full scholarship awards at the NJCAA (Junior College) D1 level is the total offering includes transportation costs one time per year to and from the college by direct route. NCAA D2 and NAIA may offer full or partial scholarship monies to college basketball recruits. While NCAA Division 3 schools are not permitted to offer athletic scholarships you can also benefit from earning academic and merit scholarships available to all students registering to attend those institutions.

  # of Scholarships Limit per Team Avg. Amount of Scholarship
Division Men’s Women’s Men’s Women’s
NCAA I 13 15 $16,154 $17,114
NCAA II 10 10 $6,329 $7,650
NCAA III* N/A N/A N/A N/A
NAIA 11 11 $7,329 $7,762
NJCAA 15 15 $2,479 $3,002

The table above shows college basketball scholarships offered at the NCAA Division 1, NCAA Division 2, NJCAA, and NAIA levels. NCAA Division 3 does not offer athletic scholarships but offers other forms of financial aid. The number of scholarships available is based on a fully funded program. Not all schools offer the maximum number of scholarships. Also, some schools have restrictions on scholarship use for out of state and international athletes.

Williams is getting closer to the full 15 scholarship roster that we all want to see.  With Kate gone in 2021 and 3 freshmen coming aboard we will have 1 or 2  scholarships left depending if Whitney Brown earns one which I think she will.  Just have to hope all get and stay healthy which will be difficult.

15 players is too many. One cause for all the transfers.  Kids want to play.

We've talked the 15 roster limit every year during the recruiting season.  15 isn't too many if you only play the top 8-9 or so, or less. IE: UConn, ND, Oregon, etc etc. Many schools (coaches) use the roster like this.. Some players play little in that scenario. Most of the best teams nationally, don't play everyone typically, for what ever that's worth. My view has always been play your best the most.

Coach Amy chooses to play lots of people...so in her case 15 may be a bunch ..too many.  She could use the large roster just the same way as last year(s),......or force her to do like most in the B1G ...play just so a select few. It may depend on how the roster shakes out when they're all together. Some may not be ready for the B1G. It's a very real dilemma.

The whole transfer thing enters in, and has really put a twist on things. It may be that everyone loses lots their team every year. Would give a coach gray hair way before their time.

Those coaches that have been able to adjust to the new world of transfers that exist today seem just fine with it.  In WBB there are more injuries every year.  Just look at our record in that area during the last several seasons.  Walk ons and redshirting are also a way to fill a roster and not have to worry about playing everyone.  Who knows.  I'm sure coach will figure it out.
