Defense

It's lack of size.  Hopefully, with the 3 transfers sitting out we get more of a chance to not have to help down low.  We defend the 3 pretty well.  We have to use the Purdue, Iowa, Wisconsin strategy of letting them shoot 3's and hoping they are not on.  It worked vs. Purdue and Iowa, but not against Wisconsin.  I just looked at our conference stats.  We are letting opponents shoot 30.7 % from 3 (good for 5th in the Big 10).  We are letting opponents shoot 54.6 % from 2 (dead last in the Big 10.  Iowa is 2nd to last at 52.5 %).

Not sure what’s going on defensively I imagine it’s because we lack a true big man but I guess I was hoping for something a little better than what we’ve seen from a Doc Sadler defense.

Agree, been very disappointed with Doc's defense this year.  That said, he needs more horses.

Part of that is easy second and third shots at point blank range.  No size and not boxing out.

Think about that 2008-2009 mighty mite team that finished 8-8 in the Big Ten. They weren't any taller than we are now, maybe even shorter. But they had tougher, more experienced players who knew how hard they had to work to succeed. Most importantly, Ade Dagunduro was a 6-5 senior and a MAN. Yvan is a 17-year-old BOY.

Steve Harley was a 6-2 senior and strong. Cam Mack is a 6-0 sophomore and skinny.

Our defensive scheme seems fine; our defensive execution is piss poor.  Sorry for the bluntness, but good lord a player or two breaks down nearly every play.  It lead to wonder if we were attempting to stop penetrating guards, defend the perimeter shot or plugging the middle to stop the bigs.

Having a shot blocker in the middle may help erase some mistakes, but each player needs to step it up...cause we don't have that eraser.

Just to rant a bit, our group of talent seems to struggle with execution with most of what we do.  You gotta hit free throws; you have to finish at the rim; you have to hit your open perimeter shots; et al.

We have the most trouble stopping the second big on the floor who is a worker.  That guy that isn't great but goes for the loose balls, works hard,etc...

I think what happens is that we do our rotations but we forget about that second big and he has the game of his life.

A lot of that defense was due to the pace we played at.  We played at an incredibly low pace.  The only calculator that I found for possessions showed we averaged 47.3 possessions per game.  Crazy low.  We were 4th in the Big 12 in 3 point percentage defense.

We are going to have higher numbers than that year just due to the possessions.  Like you said, we have a little more bulk, with experience.  I think Doc will get these guys to play solid defense.  Looking at ISU's numbers when Fred was coaching, it looks like their defense was lousy their 1st year, but turned things around the 2nd year.

Wasn't Doc the DC at ISU once too?

Even Burke is a tad slender to be a B1G starting guard. He gets swatted regularly. And he's easily thrown off-course on his drives against teams with Big Ten-quality guard play. I am rather frustrated that Dachon didn't use the year off to become a much stronger dude, but maybe he will before his final season in Lincoln...

Lack of depth plus pace = difficulties in executing a Doc defense.

Lack of size = difficulties playing defense against anyone.  There is literally no defensive scheme where not having size is desirable.

Lack of rebounding = lack of transition and momentum.

It’s a cycle, but count me as one who is impressed by the integrity of the coaching staff to install their system no matter who we’re trotting out there.  Neither the offense nor defense are easy schemes to learn, but they have been steadily showing up.  Once again, we had absolutely no business being tied at 50 with a team as talented as Michigan.

We could be holding the ball and trying to be Wisconsin to keep games close, but we’re not doing that.

Enjoy watching the building blocks.  Next year the real era starts.

ISU under Hoiberg (Looking at Sports-reference defensive ratings)

2010 - 11       111th in the country  9th in the Big 12 out of 12 teams

2011 - 12       159th in the country 6th in the Big 12 out of 10 teams

2012 - 13       171st in the country 7th in the Big 12 out of 10 teams

2013 - 14       117th in the country 5th in the Big 12 out of 10 teams *Doc's year at ISU

2014 - 15       109th in the country 8th in the Big 12 out of 10 teams

It looks like ISU was never a defensive stopper under Hoiberg.  They just tried to outscore you.  Doc's only year, was typical compared to the rest of the country but the best year in conference.

Offense (sports-reference)

2010 - 11          119th in the country    7th in the Big 12 out of 12 teams

2011 - 12           45th in the country     4th in the Big 12 out of 10 teams

2012 - 13           16th in the country     1st in the Big 12 out of 10 teams

2013 - 14            30th in the country    2nd in the Big 12 out of 10 teams

2014 - 15             28th in the country   1st in the Big 12 out of 10 teams

So far this year we are 257th in offense and 277th in defense  Last in the conference in each category

Interesting stats!  Thanks for looking this up.  I think that it does show that it might be the horses and not the jockey/trainers.  If we're criticizing Doc for bad D, then according to these stats, we should also criticize Fred for a bad O.  Much like the win/loss totals, I will reserve judgement for a few years.  Obviously, if you are looking at a 20+ loss season, you won't be ranked very high stats wise in most everything.

Sure most if not all have seen the clip of Tampa Bay Buccaneer head coach John McKay when asked about his teams execution. His reply was somewhere along the lines of he was all for it.

That site doesn't adjust their rankings for the strength of the opponents faced.

The numbers are a bit better

We're not running, "Doc Sadler's defense," by any stretch of the imagination and nor should we with the tempo we want to play.

Also, Doc Sadler's defense required 3 hour long practices where 1.75 hours of it were beating the players into defensive robots, and the other 1.25 were beating them into offensive robots.

Doc was brought in to help with scouting, game planning, game management, recruiting connections, and overall experience. All things he's an expert and elite at. But we won't be seeing the patented "Doc Defense" under Coach Hoiberg.
