2020 SF CJ Wilcher -> Xavier -> Nebraska

Recommended Posts

It might just be me but this is super awesome to me because we technically recruited a freshman who has a whole season of conditioning, playing time in a good league and strength conditioning at the college level. 4 years of eligibility is a big deal!!!  It’s like having an evolved Pokémon without all the leveling up (sorry to the non-nerds and old people on here.)

Also a younger brother currently ranked as a 5-star. Similar to Trey/Bryce McGowens... I like Hoiberg’s strategy of recruiting big time transfers from solid basketball programs in big time basketball conferences that can then recruit their 5-star younger brothers to Nebraska.

Oh no doubt, I’m just very happy with getting a dude who doesn’t have to take a year or two to start to develops physically, he’s already started that process and can shoot.  The brother thing doesn’t hurt either.  :)

Heard on a couple of different radio shows today that CJ, along with Bryce, has been very impressive through the first week - better than expected.

Excellent news thus far. NU will go far with tough, top-notch players (and recruits) such as CJ (and hopefully Simeon) & the McGowens brothers. GBR

I look at CJ as having some of the same skills as Teddy Allen without some of the baggage.

I think they're very similar in terms of size, skillset, athleticism (or lack thereof -- both a little less explosive than other high majors), and craftiness with scoring the ball.

The big difference, from what I can see, is that CJ fits our system better from a team-player perspective. He might not have explosive footspeed, but he has a lightning-quick release and ample accuracy. He doesn't seem like a guy who demands the ball in his hands like Teddy did, not the one who insists on initiating the offense, and therefore the ball doesn't stop in his hands. But when he gets the ball in catch-and-shoot situations, it's gone. You were standing right next to him and you were still too late to close out.

I guess time will tell whether my perceptions are accurate or not, but I kind of look at CJ as being a rich man's Teddy Allen. Or, conversely, looking at Teddy as being a poor man's CJ Wilcher.

Love this take, Norm!!!  🎇

Granted I have only seen Wilcher in highlights but I am not sure him and Teddy are all that similar other than lack of foot speed.  I would describe Teddy as an unorthodox, streaky YMCA style volume scorer that just gets the ball in the hoop.  Wilcher seems very much like a pure shooter to me, an old school catch-and-shoot SG.  We shall see.  I know I am really excited to see him play in a live game.

Fine. Not arguing with that description of Teddy Allen. He's a bit unorthodox. But I've seen CJ do a lot of the step-back moves Teddy Allen would do to create space in his mid-range game. But, in terms of skillset, what they're good at, they have a lot in common.

You could be spot on about CJ’s mid range game.  That is a part of his game I really don’t know much about.  It would be nice if he is a crafty scorer inside the arc; it would supplement his three point shooting nicely. He has good size for a wing and it would be nice if he could effective back down opposing wings.  I think with seasoning he will be more efficient than Teddy. I am almost more excited to see CJ than Bryce, which is probably weird since Bryce is a 5 star.
