2020 Nate Tabor SF

Recommended Posts

Was committed to St. Johns. HS Class of 2020. Would sign this fall and be a freshman next season (20-21).

OK, so we already have Donovan Williams committed from that 2020 class. Rumor has it that Hoiberg is good friends with 5-star PG Jalen Suggs' dad. Also from that class. There was discussion on the Iowa board that we would be getting a visit from 5-star center Xavier Foster.  Also from that class.

I have seen references to us having interest in the #35 player, Dawson Garcia from Minnesota, also in that 2020 class. And there's Ben Carlson, the #84 player, also in the 2020 class.

Guys we sign this year who have to sit a year as transfers would become eligible for 2020.  There are half a dozen at least of those players that we're looking at.

There are six players on the current roster who are underclassmen who, if they stayed, would take roster spots that would otherwise be available to use for 2020 players.  Additionally, there are two re-committed recruits who also would take up roster spots that could otherwise go to 2020 players.  That's 8 out of 13 roster spots for the 20-21 season.

We still have holes to fill on the 2019-2020 roster.  Any non-grad-transfer player we bring in at this point represents one fewer player to offer for the 2020 class.

Bring in Cam Mack?

Now, we're down to 4 spots to spread among 2020 freshmen and sit-a-year transfers coming in this spring.

Donovan Williams represents one of those 4 spots. Now we're down to 3.  Keep De-Andre Davis? Ok we're down to 2.  Bring in the transfer from Duquesne? That would leave one spot for either a 2020 freshman OR a sit-a-year transfer.

Please someone explain to me the value of keeping guys who are marginal talents from a prior administration?

Been thinking the same thing.

OK, now Nana is apparently transferring. So, now we have room for the Duquesne transfer and two more 2020 freshman OR the Duquesne transfer, the PF from UNLV and ONE more 2020 freshman.

Would you rather have Nate Tabor or Thor Thorbjarnarson?

Go ahead and pick.

Couldn't agree more - I appreciate the effort those guys gave late in the year when the bench was depleted, but there's a reason they weren't playing earlier in the year.

We are going to recruit at a level we've never seen here. Free scholarships for 2020 are gold for this staff now.

These coaches have to be given the opportunity to sign their guys and suggest that current guys move along if that's what the coaches want to do. Anything else is short-sighted to the long term goal.

There is none and most of us know it. The more we clean house, the sooner we will be much better.

People are kidding themselves if Thor, Amir, Brady, Karrington, Nana were on other DI teams, no one would want them to transfer here. Shoot, Amir didn't commit to Nebraska until May 10 last year and wouldn't even have been a Husker if Jack McVeigh hadn't left. Yes he is athletic but let's not act like he was on Miles' radar for 3 years as a 4-year program contributor.

Gotta keep Thor right? He will be a junior next season and play no matter what. Karrington Davis however.....

Not trying to mean, but why must we keep Thor? Admittedly, he played very hard when given the chance late. He sees the floor well offensively and can be a facilitator for others from the wing. However, his 3-pt shot doesn't seem to be consistent enough, and he's not a finisher at the rim. Huge liability on defense. He wasn't really a factor the past two years on teams that were NIT level.

So if the coaches can recruit over him in the '20 class or in the next few weeks with a transfer who must sit out a year, they should have the ability to do that. If they want to keep him and hope he develops into a player who's better than who they can recruit in the next 12 months, they can. But I'm betting on the former happening.

Honestly, it's that way for anyone on the current roster. The coaches have to be allowed to bring in the players they want at the speed that they want to bring them in. Fans expecting them to keep players X, Y and Z is short-sighted thinking ... especially if those players have 2 or more years of eligibility remaining, tying up a scholarship for multiple years.

It's admittedly harsh, but it's the way things work with coaching changes. Ideally, the ability to recruit over the current players happens that much faster with the type of high quality coaching staff we've assembled.

Folks, status quo is not all right?  Who here wants to stay on the bottom edge of relevance?  Who wants to be in the upper tier of Division I basketball, a consistent top 20 team?  We can't get to where we are going with mid-level talent.  We have some talented recruiters who are going to bring in talented players.  Don't worry if we have roster attrition.  It is going to happen.  But others will come in, and the building will begin.

Did you see any of Davis' junior year highlights?  He was a better basketball player at age 17 then Thor is now.  If he has any chance of ever getting healthy, he has the potential to be great and is worthy of a scholarship.  If he's not going to get healthy, then just shift him over to an academic scholarship and say "thanks, and get well."  But I don't see any scenario where you just ask him to transfer.

Listen, if this coaching staff cannot, in relatively short order, go out and find and then obtain commitments from players who would be immediate upgrades over Amir and Thor (and you can throw Nana in there, although he's already gone), then we've all been sold a bill of goods.

Fred, is that you?

You most certainly nailed this one.  You may have been the only one on the board that drew this conclusion.

You know the old saying... a broken clock is right twice a day
