Minnesota (16-8) vs. Nebraska (13-11) Game Thread

Not sure if he is still reffing but a former co-worker who use do a lot of the large high school games, a lot of state tournament games here in Missouri and was dabbling in the small college level and I use to talk about how much the game has changed with regards to what got called.  He told me he was flat out told if he called traveling (the catch the pass take two steps to set up and then another to start the move) he would not get work.  It amazes me how much traveling, palming, double dribble as it was called when I was playing (yes years ago now) is allowed today.  Add in what others have said here about the inconsistent calls on contact and the game has decline. There as always been contact down low but in today's game they bang way more than they up top and yet a hand check 30 feet from the basket is called a foul despite not changing the play while same contact down low is play on.

Okay, back to my coffee.

For those watching the game on TV; how did the crowd sound?  I thought for the most part, the crowd seemed really into the game.

The crowd was pretty sad up until we ended up tying the game around 31-31 (or whatever the score actually was).

But after that I think the crowd was trying what they could to will the team to a win.

Who would want to become a referee? Somewhere I'm sure there's a dystopian novel where the future form of criminal punishment is to force prisoners to become referees.

I'm honestly amazed that they can still find even bad referees to do the job, given how much it's degraded over the years.

My husband is a referee and has been for over 30 years.  He loves being around the kids.  He tunes out most of the fans although he has occasionally kicked fans out of the gym. That usually stops the ridiculousness.  He usually sticks up for refs saying they call what they see at the time.  However, last night, for example, as soon as he saw who the refs were, he said 2 of them were known to be terrible.

There is a big time shortage at the high school level in Nebraska and Iowa—maybe all over.  I think there is a college class at UNL that teaches how to ref.  My husband recently reffed with a couple of guys in their late 20s who had taken the class and he said they were really good refs.

I always have teased my hubby that he loves it because I don’t yell at him enough. Ha!

according to what I read, the high school shortage is nationwide. and surveys indicate it's the parents that have driven people out of reffing kids. If they're anything like the ones I endured for a few weeks in soccer some years ago, I'd be arrested for homicide within a couple of games.

My father officiated high school and small college football. At Seacrest Field about 30 years ago, he was serving as the umpire, who stands in the middle of the defense. He was blindsided and tore up his knee pretty badly. I sat among a group of Grand Island HS fans, adults all. As my father lay on the field, in clear pain and distress, these GI people cheered and said some of the most vile things I've heard from alleged adults. They quieted down only when the ambulance came on the field. I've tried to be judicious in my critiques of officials since. And I've always hated Grand Island, though I know it's irrational.

This.  There are games being canceled right now because of a shortage of referees.  It’s a nationwide problem.  I’ve had a parent run out on the court and get in the face of one of my referees once.  We had to be escorted out of the gym by a police officer.  It was a 4th grade boys game.  Sad.

No, it's okay to hate Grand Island.

So true.  The catch and 2 steps happens all the time - drives me insane.  While not as bad as the NBA, the changing of pivot foot is quite common as well.

If they adhered to the actual rules as written and called the current games like they did back in the dark ages when I played HS ball, the games would never end because there would be a whistle about every 2 seconds.  Everybody marvels at the great moves by ball handlers (yes, they look pretty most of the time), but almost all of them are illegal, primarily because of palming/carrying the ball.  It is physically impossible to carry out some of those moves without breaking the rules as written.

If someone wanted to be a complete jackwagon, you could call a "palm" about half the time when someone is bringing it up in the back court and isn't even being guarded.

With that said, I wonder if the speed of the game has affected the ability to make some of those calls.  Everything happens so fast now that a "bang/bang" play is as much about what you thought you saw as it is what you saw.

I feel bad for referees.  They have to make that judgement call on a bang/bang play while we sit at home or in the stands and watch it five times over to see if they made a right call or not.

I agree...except for the feeling bad for referees part.  ?

I once had some friends reffing a C2 high school football game.  Another friend and I walked up to the sideline where a couple guys were bitching loudly at some call, so I said at the top of my voice "yeah you dumb sons a bitches!"    The one guy on the reffing crew that I didn't know asked the head official "what the hell did we do to piss off that guy?", to which the response was a chuckle and a "don't worry about it, we know that guy".

Meanwhile, the guys who were complaining about the call looked around a bit embarrassed, went and took a seat, and never bitched about a call the rest of the night.

I worked as an intramural ref for flag football a couple years ago at UNL. Most of the full-time staff members working at the Rec do high school games on the side and pushed us to get certified to do the same. When I'd go watch my siblings play JV football and basketball, I recognized a lot of the refs from work.
