February and beyond

that's average, though. how much variability in that? seems we've had two squads with great runs in that timeframe, including our one tourney team who played their best ball that time of year.

can't really discern a pattern from that if it alternates between seasons.

Bottom line is we haven't fielded many good teams the last 7 years regardless of the months.

He's only won about 40 percent of conference games overall, so about the norm. He only won 36% of conference games at Colorado State.

He also had the same postseason success at Colorado State that he has had here.

Hire a coach who has been there. We've taken the strategy of hiring people who have been there but haven't figured out to win (and do it consistently). It's no wonder hiring a coach to do something they couldn't do at their previous job would turn out with our program not being able to do the same.

At CSU, he was a builder. He took over a team with Marcus Walker and a bunch of walk-ons. They went 0-16 in the MWC in that first year. At NDSU, he was a builder.

I think you can make an argument that, while overall Tim hasn't succeeded in the way we want, he built something that neither Barry nor Doc were able to build — a reputation for Nebraska being a place where talented high school players and transfers looking for a new start could come in and make a difference. In short, he built up the talent levels here, but not the overall program.

C'est la vie. We had some good times. Au revoir, mon ami.

No need to pile on Miles. The die is cast.

I'd rather appreciate the months Tim has given us in that seven years that we didn't enjoy in the previous 13:

  • Feb. 8-March 9, 2014: an 8-1 run that culminated with No-Sit Sunday and the Selection Show excitement on March 16.
  • January 2016: a four-game winning streak that included Nebraska's second-consecutive home victory against Michigan State.
  • January 2018: a 7-3 record with a last-second win against Illinois and a manhandling of Michigan.
  • February 2018: a 5-1 record with a thrilling Senior Day blowout of Penn State.
  • Nov. 14-Dec. 16: 2018: a 7-2 run that included Nebraska's first victory over Creighton in nearly a decade.

Yeah, it will end badly. Most coaching tenures do, including Nee's and Iba's. Cipriano's tenure ended tragically, of course, putting all the rest of this pouting in its proper perspective.

Just like that ex-wife you have (OK, maybe it's just me): it wasn't meant to be, but at least we can remember the good times, no matter how few and far between they may have been.

One more week that was fun:

December 28th 2016-Jan 5th 2017: Starting 3-0 in the Big 10 with wins at Indiana, at Maryland, and a double OT win against Iowa. Obviously know how the rest of that conference slate turned out..but at the time that was unexpected to start 3-0.

Nee, through his first 7 years, only won 42 percent of his conference games while at Nebraska.  He only won 45 percent of his games in February and March.  He is considered one of the better coaches in school history.

Miles won his 50th conference game at Nebraska in 122 B1G regular season games. He's only the 4th Husker coach to attain that, if I recall correctly.

Not to undermine anything, but it helps when 1. you've been able to hold a job for seven seasons, and 2. you're playing 18-20 conference games versus 12-16.

Yep. Longevity certainly assisted with that feat.

Still an interesting feat.  The fact that he made it long enough to see 122 conference games playing arguably tougher games (more conference vs more non-conference) because of the increase in conference games is a small feat in itself.

No doubt. It's why I posted that. Pretty good stuff, really.

I was so naive then.
