What is the difference between an official visit and an unofficial visit?
Any visit to a college campus by a college-bound student-athlete or his or her parents paid for by the college is an official visit. Visits paid for by college-bound student-athletes or their parents are unofficial visits.

During an official visit the college can pay for transportation to and from the college for the prospect, lodging and three meals per day for both the prospect and the parent or guardian, as well as reasonable entertainment expenses including three tickets to a home sports event.

The only expenses a college-bound student-athlete may receive from a college during an unofficial visit are three tickets to a home sports event.

Both the school and the athlete can have a limit to official visits so maybe it's Nebraska trying to say we really, really want you.

Thanks. So looks like the main thing he would miss with an unofficial is a couple of meals, gas mileage from Omaha and a night's stay in Lincoln. I can see him keeping his options open with schools further away but it also seems Nebraska is far from a sure thing.

Sautter’s stuff is all behind a pay wall but I’d say Nebraska is far from a sure thing with both Sallis and Hepburn. Something to see is if Coach Lewis comes back to offer either of them given he developed the initial relationships with the two of them

From the article:

UCLA assistant Michael Lewis, who spent the past three seasons with Tim Miles at Nebraska, was the lead recruiter for Sallis at NU and was watching in Birmingham.

So he's at least keeping tabs.

Article also says Sallis' first in-person meeting with Hoiberg was June 19. So, after the coaching change, NU has had to make up for lost time in establishing a relationship versus a certain other team that shall go unnamed, but the article indicates Hoiberg & Co have made up a lot of ground in less than a month.

Quote

“[Hoiberg and coaches] were showing me on film how well they space the floor and showing me how they like to run off ball screens,” Sallis said. “They run the floor really well, so that fits me.”

Crazy that our state has 2 point guards of that caliber in the same class.  I hope we can land at least one of them if not both

Hunter may have to play some point guard for MN this year, but that's not his natural position at all. He's an off-guard, or even better a wing if he keeps growing.

With his stock now higher than ever, Sallis said his recruitment was “wide open” and he’s “just enjoying the process as he enters his junior year.

But Nebraska remains at the forefront. After taking an unofficial visit on June 19 to meet new head coach Fred Hoiberg and staff in person, Sallis said he’s maintained regular contact with the Huskers ever since.

In fact, Sallis will be back in Lincoln on Oct. 4-6 for an official visit, the first and only official he’s set so far.

That's big to get an official visit. He only gets 5, so him using 1 of those on NU, when he just as easily could take multiple unofficials for the short drive to Lincoln and maintain 5 officials for other schools farther away, is a good sign.

That rule changed in 2018 so it's more like 15 though it's a bit like a max of 5 per year.  It's still a good sign he's taking an official here though.

13.6.2.2.2 Men's Basketball. In men's basketball a prospective student-athlete may take a maximum of five expense-paid visits to Division I institutions before the completion his junior year of high school, five additional visits before October 15 following his completion of high school and five visits beginning October 15 following his completion of high school, including visits related to a possible transfer. These restrictions apply regardless of the number of sports in which the prospective student-athlete is involved. A prospective student-athlete is not required to graduate from high school in order to receive a permissible post-high school visit.

Good to know - thanks. So that means he can take multiple officials to Lincoln then. 😁

Bossi thinks Hunter may end up a top 5 point guard in the 2021 class. Still not sure why rivals lists him as a point guard, but that’d put him near 5-star status. He just keeps moving up rankings (247sports has him #32 in the country). He’ll have a big opportunity to show what he can do this weekend.

When is the last time we had an in-state recruit who would’ve been ranked in the top 40 in the country? Strickland?
