Dang. I’m seeing some fans on twitter basically tweeting at him to not let the door hit him on the way out...and that he wasn’t good enough- as a lifelong fan, are program isn’t to the point where we can be pushing away home state four star kids- they don’t historically grow on trees here- wish the young man well.

Ridiculous and sad at the same time.  Even if he was a 2* Schlub... it still wouldn’t be appropriate.

What wouldn’t be appropriate? Trying to get guys who are better or who might work in the system more than he does?

it appears Donovan didn’t think he would get early playing time (whether the coaches told him this or not). He wants the time (I don’t blame him).

And even if this isn’t right, and Hoiberg forced him out: in the long run it’s probably better for Donovan. If Coach wasn’t going to play him, then he was probably going to transfer anyway. Might as well get that out of the way now.

I wish he were still coming. He’s not. I wish all parties well, but I’m moving on.

What I really worry about is that he goes up the road a bit and then beats us every year.

That is what I really worry about.

He’s not going to be a Husker (next year), so I’m choosing not to worry about him at all.

Full court press for Sallis.  They might take a grad transfer or something but no way do they fill both open spots with Sallis warm on us.  I think Teddy and Sallis would’ve screwed Donovan’s playing time at UNL.  I also think everything he said in the interview is accurate.  The Williams boys are both great kids.  They’ve both been a victim of terrible timing with regard to UNL athletics.

I want Sallis N in the worst possible way. My concern is that our coaching staff isn’t giving high school recruits any reason to feel that they are a priority in the program.

Umm... if you re-read my post, I was responding to the fans giving Donovan a jab.

I dont get that feeling.  They want the best players that can contribute.  If thats a juco or xfer then be it.  At this point the program needs to do what it can to win a tournament game.  The rest will come with this staff.  The fact that these high recruits arent willing to give it time or realize the other talent is better shows they are more individuals then worrying about the team success and working hard.

The kid has to make a decision that is right for him and his family.  I have no issues with his decision.  I know his brother had to make an equally tough decision and chose Wisconsin.  Nebraska fans struggle to understand why anyone would not choose Nebraska, but a lot goes into these decisions.

What sort of caught me like a punch was his choice of words.  It seems to me that he threw some shade at the program/staff.  Nebraska is the right place, but it is not the right time?

They want guys that can contribute without having to be developed in-game.  This could mean a guy like Arop or Thor who might strongly contribute as a junior or senior while developing off the court.  Sallis is going to have the skills of an upperclassman upon arrival, and he’ll get on the court with Cam and Tominaga immediately if we can win him over.  Burke will graduate so the SG spot will be wide open.

why wouldn’t they fill both spots this year? We will have plenty of room in 2021 for Sallis.

Hmmmm I like Donovan a lot, so this sucks, but can’t really blame either side here. Let’s not spin this as Williams not wanting to play under Hoiberg or Hoiberg not wanting Donovan. Hoiberg obviously wants guys that will be immediately ready to get us to a tournament and Donovan wanted to be the alpha dog from day 1. With the commitment of Teddy it’s obvious that Donovan wasn’t gonna be the alpha dog from the start.

It sucks to lose him, but if he wanted to be handed a starting spot well then oh well.  I hope every coach of a team I cheer for is trying to over recruit what he or she has on the roster and the kids coming in are willing to compete and earn the spot.  I know that is old school but.

Williams said Teddy’s commitment “definitely, definitely, definitely played a part”. Which puts Hoiberg in a really tough spot, if Teddy makes the team better we gotta take him. Williams being committed didn’t deter Teddy, but Teddy’s commitment deterred Williams  - so that’s the way the cookie crumbled. We wanted both.

Sorry.  I meant at SG.  I don’t think we’ll see a true freshman shooting guard in the next class, and I think we’ll be letting Sallis know this.  You start 5 stars, and you guarantee them the start. Burke and Green will be graduated, and Tominaga will be our 3pt specialist along with Teddy, who will likely be our top scorer.  I could definitely see a grad transfer, sitout transfer, or JUCO situation there so we have an upperclassman or two, but I highly doubt Williams gets replaced by another TFr SG in the next recruiting cycle.

Cam (sr)

Sallis (fr)

Teddy (Sr)

Banton (Jr)

Yvan (Jr)

^^ that’s how I see it anyway.

I don’t think we’ll see big freshmen recruiting classes from Hoiberg ever.  I think he recruits to have no weaknesses in his top 8 every year.  Whatever we get beyond that is a bonus.  But if you have an interested 5* in your back yard, you have to make sure he is a starter if you recruit him.

He couldn't crack their rotation either. Besides after he committed to NU, he didn't fit their system perfectly.

LOL @Waylon Van Smack wasted no time tweeting Donovan today practically begging him to "be a Jay" as they are wont to say.  Seems at least a handful of them think he's a perfect fit for The System™.  It's so unseemly...those weirdos have absolutely no shame.
