All remaining autobid opportunities still have a #1 seed except for C-USA. That was Middle Tennessee that fell to Southern Mississippi and still has an opportunity to steal an at-large bid.

LJS had a good article on this thread's subject by AP writer Paul Newberry in this morning's paper. If someone cares to link it, his  observations make a lot of sense. However, because of the $$$ involved, they will never be augmented.

I think they're right. The conference tournaments have become such an obvious cash grab that all the fun got sucked out of them a ways back. Remember some of those old Big 8 tournaments in KC back in the day? Those were fun. And consequential. And appropriate for the league.

Now it's everyone trying to play in NYC or Vancouver or Hong Kong.

This might not be a popular sentiment here, but television and the ad buys that it exists to serve have wrecked a lot of college sports.

I like how basketball is set up.

Whether it is high school or college.

You first play for regular season titles (which i think we put too little emphasis on and a regular season conference championship should be celebrated almost like a national tournament title)

Second you play in the end of year tournament...which allows teams to grow throughout the year...some teams are just not ready to be good in January, but they develop as a team and have a chance to control their destiny from the first conference tourney game until they lose....we reward 36 wildcards, which should make sure no "great" team is left out...but in the end, every team that qualifies for their conference tournament is just one great run from winning the end of season tournament. (that is all it is, it is called the national title, but it is just an end of year 300 plus team tournament that 36 teams get the opportunity to go through double elimination.
