hhcmatt 12,959
The release from UNL --------------------------------------------- Huskers To Face Mississippi State in Charity Exhibition Game on Sunday Lincoln -- The University of Nebraska and Mississippi State University basketball programs will look to raise money for hurricane victims, as the programs will square off in a charity exhibition game on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Miss. Nebraska and Mississippi State together sought and received a waiver from the NCAA to play the extra exhibition game with the sole purpose to benefit hurricane victims. While admission is free for Sunday’s game, representatives from the MSU Student Relief Fund and the Salvation Army will be collecting monetary donations to benefit Hurricane Irma relief efforts. “Hurricane Irma was a devastating storm which affected many people in the Southeast and in the Caribbean,” Nebraska Coach Tim Miles said. “Our goal is that we can raise a lot of money for those who need it and have a great time competing against Coach (Ben) Howland and his team. It is a great platform for our two programs to raise awareness and help people in need. We look forward to Sunday afternoon and it should be an exciting game.” “This is a great opportunity to help so many people in need who were affected by the hurricane,” MSU coach Ben Howland said. “Hurricane Irma was devastating, and our hearts and prayers have been with everyone as they have dealt with horrific and tragic loss. This is a chance for us to do our part in helping those in need.” “I so appreciated Nebraska and Coach Miles for their incredible willingness to support this effort. It’s going to be a fun day for two Power 5 teams to play an exhibition game and get a head start on the season.” Mississippi State returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from a team that went 16-16 last season for Howland, who enters his third year at Mississippi State. The Huskers return nine letterwinners, including four players who started at least nine games last season. Junior guard Glynn Watson Jr. headlines the returnees, as he averaged 13.0 points per game, while junior forward Jack McVeigh averaged 7.5 points per game. NU also returns Evan Taylor, who started 21 games last season, and Jordy Tshimanga, who made nine Big Ten starts as a freshman in 2016-17. Sunday’s game is a rare matchup between the two schools. In regular-season play, the two teams have met just once, with the Bulldogs claiming a 69-66 win in the Ford Far West Classic in Portland, Ore., in 1995. Sunday’s game will be broadcast by the Husker Sports Network with Kent Pavelka on the call and available on Huskers.com and on the Huskers app. It will be made available to any of the HSN affiliates to carry. Fans are encouraged to check with their local HSN affiliate to see if they are carrying Sunday’s game.

49r 7,391
Also, looking at the KenPom stuff a little closer it's apparent that Ben Howland went to the Doc Sadler school of non-con scheduling...at least last year.

Swan88 1,436
This will be a tough test. They were a very young team last year: had only one senior on the roster. And they return four starters this year. They had some ups and downs, but they beat LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Missouri and Tennessee. Their respectable conference losses include 81-88 to Kentucky, 92-98 to Auburn, 73-77 and 57-63 to South Carolina, 72-79 to Georgia, 52-57 to Florida, and 82-87 to Ole Miss. They also have a Freshman this year rated by Rivals as #35 and by ESPN as #36 overall. Norm Peterson
Norm Peterson 9,682
This is actually a pretty cool matchup for us. Both teams went into the tank during conference season last year (I think both teams won 6 games in conference) and both had a long swoon of consecutive losses. I think both ended up with 6 conference wins. Their best two players from a year ago were both guards and they both return, including high scoring 6'4" shooting guard Quinndary Weatherspoon at 16 1/2 ppg and Lamar Peters at 11 ppg. They have a 6'10" 225# PF named Aric Holman who, as a soph last year, averaged 23 min, 8 1/2 ppg and 6 bds. They also have a sophomore center who probably starts in Schnider Herard who's 6'10" and 260#. They have a couple of other guys in that 6'10"-6'11" size range, but might be a couple of stiffs. After that, they are really guard heavy. The two returning starters plus Weatherspoon's younger brother Nick, a Rivals 4-star freshman. They also return a 6'4", 165# skinny kid named Tyson Carter who chipped in 7.5 ppg in 20 minutes as a freshman last year. They weren't a great shooting team last year averaging only 34.7% from beyond the arc, but they did attempt over 700 treys, so they will launch 'em. I think this team, on paper, seems pretty similar to ours. My speculative starting lineup for them would go as follows: PG 6'0" 185# So SG 6'4" 205# Jr SG 6'4" 165# So PF 6'10" 225# Jr C 6'10" 260# So Jordy and Schnider Herard are very comparable players on paper. Nearly same height and weight, both sophomores, and they put up similar numbers their freshmen years. Their starting PF is very similar in size to either Isaiah or Isaac. And the lines between their PG and Glynn are going to look very similar. I'm guessing their Weatherspoon kid will be a very good matchup for James Palmer and so the X factor is that 2nd guard or wing. This should be a pretty fun test from another P5 school. Really looking forward to how the boys do. Go Huskers! Edited October 18, 2017 by Norm Peterson Swan88

trickey 817
Norm, taking your summary as accurate, it seems like the guards and centers may offset each other and this scrimmage will be won or lost by the forwards, 3 point shooting and defense. It should be a good contest. To win on the road would be a bonus. Just the experience will benefit us immensely. Now, most every school will use this excuse to add this type of game in 2017; does it become the norm or is the NCAA limiting it in the future?

If I’m the NCAA, I let these continue to happen and actually encourage teams to do 1 per year. That would be a good look for the NCAA and give teams an extra chance to play. The God of Thunder 625
This matchup is weird to me because all of the other Charity exhibitions scheduled seem to be teams in close proximity to one another (Creighton and Omaha, KU and MIzzou) where you could probably just take a bus. Leave it to a connection from Ole Teflon Marc Boehm for us to say "screw it, let's fly to Mississippi."
