This site has the Illini ranked 9th??

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Ranking: 12

Last Week: 14

Move: UP 2

Nebraska had a huge win against Minnesota this week, but that does not negate to losses to St. Johns and UCF. The jury is still out on the Huskers in 2017.

Looking at the future a little bit this morning doing the update and man, the schedule really does open up after the Kansas game.  I agree with @hhcdave in that 8-10 in conference really does look like something this team should achieve barring complete collapse.  If the team gels we could easily flip that to 10--8.  Couple of notes on the rankings today, first keep an eye on North Texas.  They were hovering around 300 when we played them but have jumped up about 50 spots since.  Second, Boston College got a big boost from their win yesterday, and finally, we were up to 88 last night but have settled back down to #90.

Here is today's KenPom update:

Lots of upward mobility at the bottom of the Big Ten.  We're all out of the triple digits now.  Time for the guys to pick up some wins over the holidays and come back ready for Conference play.

Just a quick little KenPom update today.  Due to Indiana's loss to IPFW last night the Huskers have moved up another spot in the Rankings to 11th!  Also, UTSA has jumped up 30 spots.

Interesting note....

Big 10 teams that are down: Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana

Big 10 teams that are up: Michigan St, Purdue, Maryland, Penn State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Rutgers, Illinois.

Interesting question...

Are we the only conference with all teams in the top 100?

Nope, the SEC has all 14 in the top 100 and the Big 12 has everyone in the top SIXTY!!!! (and 6 out of 10 are in the KenPom top 25). Big 12 is absolutely stacked this year!

Big 12 will be a dogfight and I am probably more surprised that the SEC has all teams in the top 100 than I am that the Big 12 has everyone in the top 60.

I'm into analytics and this has bothered me for the last week or so. My level of optimism over our play hasn't been matched by the numbers guys. It's not just KenPom. We're 93 in TeamRankings and 81 in Massey. These things measure how you play, not just the W/Ls, and they're not showing much. Northwestern, for example, was playing poorly earlier and had dropped into the upper 50s. Now they seem to be putting it together and they're into the mid-40s. Strictly from a numbers standpoint, I wonder what's not translating into the analysis.

(Not talking about RPI, that's an entirely different discussion and not worth a second thought at this point in the season.)

Our run of play has only really started to come together in the past few weeks or so.  We have jumped about 20 spots in that time.  The last game against UTSA we didn't beat the KenPom spread which is why we didn't move anywhere.  Wins and losses matter less than by how much a team wins or loses.

Right, it's how you're playing. Part of the reason we've moved up since the start of the season is that our preseason KenPom ranking reflected a lot of past performance. That's disappeared from the equation now, and our body of work after 13 games puts us at 86. NW, for example, started much higher in preseason, dropped a lot as they struggled and now has started moving up.

Apparently something we're doing isn't translating, or maybe I'm misjudging what I see on the court. IDK, maybe I should worry about what to get my wife for Christmas.

Probably it's for the best.  Worrying about our KenPom ranking is somewhat pointless, IMO.  It's just fun for me to do this thread. :)

Actually I think the margin in some of the games may have prevented us from moving up more in KenPom, for example against UTSA we give up a meaningless 3 at the end to fall under the KenPom line which I think may have made the difference in a few spots.  But it is what it is.  Like @Norm Peterson says, in the end either this team will be good enough to make the postseason or they aren't.  Time will tell, and we may as well just enjoy the ride!

Does that guy that says "10 more" really think that wins against Delaware State and Stetson and only 8 more conference wins will get us into the tourney?

I took that to mean that we need to jump 10 more spots in the RPI to (likely) make the Dance.  We're sitting at 55 right now, and usually if you're a top 45 team you've got a good shot at snagging an at-large bid.

Oh ok that makes more sense. A 45 RPI is a solid bubble team. Thanks for clearing that up.
