Huskers Head to Vegas for South Point Shootout

 

The Nebraska women’s basketball team (3-2) opens a three-game road swing by playing a pair of games this weekend at the South Point Shootout in Las Vegas. Nebraska’s appearance at South Point Arena comes to and end with the Huskers taking on the two-game tournament by facing ACC opponent Virginia (4-1) on at 8 p.m.

The Huskers will be facing the Virginia Cavaliers for the first time in school history on Saturday.

 

Virginia brings a spotless 4-0 record to Las Vegas, following a 62-54 win over Rutgers in Charlottesville on Nov. 20. The Cavaliers also own home wins over Middle Tennessee (63-51) and Coppin State (103-40) along with a road win at Richmond (63-56).
Virginia’s nine-player rotation features just one senior in 5-8 guard Breyana Mason, who is averaging 10.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists, while leading the Cavaliers with 2.3 steals per game.

 

Four juniors and four freshmen have made up the core of the Cavaliers this season. Lauren Moses, a 6-2 junior forward leads Virginia in scoring and rebounding with 14.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Fellow junior starter Aliyah Huland El has added 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and a team-best 3.8 assists. She also leads the Cavaliers with seven three-pointers.

 

As a team, Virginia is averaging 72.8 points per game while surrendering just 50.2 points per contest. The Cavaliers have shot the ball extremely well early in the season, knocking down 41.5 percent (27-65) of their three-point attempts and 76.1 percent (54-71) of their free throws. They also own a plus-5.0 rebounding margin and a plus-4.5 team turnover margin.

 

Last season, Coach Joanne Boyle and the Cavaliers finished with an 18-16 overall record that included a 6-10 ACC mark. Virginia advanced to the 2016 Postseason WNIT.

 

Virginia opened tournament play at the South Point Shootout on Friday by losing to St. John’s 66-55.

Virginia looks to be kind of young but has some size.  One freshman is a 6-9 Nigerian. .....and the Cav's hadn't lost until this tourney.

Hannah and Riley both had more game minutes than Esther last night. It will be interesting to watch if the trend continues. The freshman are doing a good job of taking care of the basketball.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hannah break into the starting lineup by the start of the conference season.

only reason i can think of for hannah not in the starting lineup: being a freshman, coach williams wants her to get a good look at the game before putting her in. probably doesn't want to put too much on her right away. having said that, i think hannah has shown the skill set that she could be in that first five.

Well one thing, The huskers will get a lot of practice against zones.

VA Wins, by 22 points:  73-51  Husker Ladies finish with a 16 pt surge after being down by more than 30 points.

 

Ladies out-rebounded and out-shot by Virginia.  As the announcers said, growing pains and a learning experience for Amy Williams Team.

I certainly don't have the solutions but 35% shooting...just won't be to competitive with that kind of shooting. Rebounding and turnovers are problem. Got some issues to work on. It may take a while.  From the broadcast it sounded like they're out of sync, and trying to do to much individually, need to relax and play as a team.

 

Lots of stuff to work on. Coach sounded a little frustrated after the game. The last couple have been tough. It's got to be hard on the women.

 

We lost to much scoring from last year...can't yet make up for that.

fans are going to have to hang in there and support the huskers. probably going to take longer than some of us hoped. really cringing come a few days before Christmas. ugh.

It looks like we may be doing more than our share of 'bearing-it' (losses ) this season. On the positive side, I haven't seen any 'Quit' from the Team! They keep on !

We won't 'Quit' either.

One thing I noticed yesterday is that Washington State gave Maryland a game and lost by 10 at the end.  Maybe Wazzu is a bit better than we thought and Maryland not as good as their ranking.  

 

Wish we we could find that clutch shooter.  Really thought Cinco could have stepped into something like that because she had some good games last year, but it's looking like it is a bigger adjustment to the coaching philosophy than I anticipated.

 

Thinking at this point in time, we could hopefully beat Illinois in conference, but not counting on anyone else.  Need to learn a lot in the next month and settle in to the new system.   

 

Coach Williams had some good reliable shooters at USD.  Not so much with us right now.

The team is looking to take the lumps, but I have a feeling that the wrinkles will iron out by mid season. With the new coaching staff and maybe some unresolved chemistry schisms, it might take a while.

 

But I will not lose faith in the team.

There may be a few lumps this year but we need to remember “success” can be defined by more than just wins and losses.  We are a relatively young team and our freshmen are gaining valuable game minutes. We have also shown a lot of fight. We don’t give up and have had some good runs late in games.

The biggest issue I see is there is too much “thinking” going on out on the court.  By this, I mean there is some hesitancy on both the offensive and defensive ends. It seems they are thinking about …where do I pass?  where/when do I move on offense? Are we switching screens on defense?, etc.

This is BRAND NEW to the entire team this year not just the newcomers. This will improve with time as they become more comfortable with the offensive and defensive sets.  If we face a lot of zone this year as teams try to collapse on Jessica, quick perimeter passing will be key to finding open shots.

There is a lot of potential in this team. I will continue to be there and cheer them on… win or lose.

There are things in the game that I understand.  ie. most freshmen do not know how to box out well.  They have to adjust to the speed at the next  level.  This is what worries me.  We are an experienced 6'4 and 6'5 on the blocks.  How do we have little to no inside presence?  

We should be killing it on the offensive glass.

Just my guess......

 

Right now the offense (or defense) doesn't seem to be designed to have Jess and Allie stay near the paint. So if that's not going to happen consistently, then everyone else MUST crash the boards. We as a team, don't get lots of offensive rebounds......I agree... that's a problem. Sometimes wonder if they shouldn't try Jess and Allie in a team zone, set up near the lane. I just don't see them having the skill set to be covering defensibly all over the floor...not being negative but it's just reality for bigs.

Most of the teams I watch try to keep the big - bigs near the basket.

Burns (Rachel) knows how to block out....not many others know how, are physically able,  or ?

 

It may all yet happen the way Coach wants it to happen eventually.....we'll see if it changes with improved guard play. (defense and scoring)
