I think we're most in need of someone who can add depth at the two guard spots.  A combo guy, perhaps, who can fill it up, if such a person is still available.

 

Hopefully Dimes can correct me, but I don't think there is anyone left that remotely fits this mold.

This has been a depressing use of my time....

 

The Immediately eligible list

 

Kelvin Amayo, Iona 6'5" - Former Marshall recruit, sat out last year with an injury he's still rehabbing. Previous year started and average 7.9 points, 5 reb, 2.7 assists per game. Slasher, got to the FT line a bit, no outside shot. Seems on the radar of a lot of mid-major east coast type teams, unknown how he's except a back up role
 
Karon Waller - Binghamton 6'4" - Sat out last year with a hip injury. Previous year before he barely played. The year before that though shot 40% from 3 and drew contact. If he's healthy then he's a maybe.
 
Kellen McCormick, Western Michigan 6'8" - Tall and can make 3s. Didn't play a ton so probably questionable athletic/defensive ability
 
A.J. Astroth, Towson 6'5" - Formerly at Vanderbilt, sat out last year with a knee injury.  Started a good portion of the year before. Good rebounder. Might be a shooter though didn't show it.
 
Brendyn Taylor, Santa Clara 6'3" - Formerly of USC where he didn't play. Dad played in NBA, brother for Oregon...so genetics. Backup at Santa Clara, not really a scorer though can draw contact and reputedly a good defender.
 
Jodan Price - Eastern Michigan 6'7"  - Formerly at DePaul. Tall 3pt shooter who can't make 3s. Probably thinks he's a lot better than he actually is.
 
Cameron Fowler - Niagara 6'0" - Redshirted at Iowa St for a year. Good: Starting PG last year, minutes under belt. Bad: Can't shoot at all...makes Benny Parker look like Steph Curry bad
 
Chad Rykhoek, Baylor 6'11" - Was a top 150 recruit, never played a minute due to injury, actually quitting due to injury. Decided he wanted to play again. In HS was a 3pt shooter. Old enough to have been offered here by Doc Sadler.
 
Parker U'u San Diego State - 6'4" - Scholarship player at Hartford, transferred to San Diego St to try it as a walk-on, tore his ACL, never really . High energy, scout team guy.
 
Tristan Thomas, USC Upstate 6'3" - Originally Div II guy, 3 pt specialist, probably an above average passer. His lack of playing time for a terrible A-Sun team indicates that he probably can't guard anyone.

The only guy I don't see is Wes Clark from Mizzou in the "released from team" column. Saw him play yesterday at an open gym, solid 1/2 guard. Reportedly looking to transfer out east. One team I heard was UCONN

I should have clarified...those were only grad transfers I listed.

If Wes actually is immediately eligible, I'll update though I think he has a redshirt to play one year situation

I am just throwing darts but I this kids dad was an assistant coach for the Huskers from 2006-2010. Sounds like he is going to Gonzaga, but not a done deal. His numbers are good. Would be a nice replacement for AWIII at this late stage. He announced he was transferring on 5/30 so maybe they have time to get him interested in a visit.

I think I'd take him. Scoring point guard eligible the year after Tai graduates.

What exactly is indicating that this isn't a done deal? The dude is gonig to Gonzaga.

The problem with AWIII taking his sweet time is that our fairly small chance of even getting Matthews or others to visit is that a lot of those ships have sailed.

You mentioned you were tracking the market closely. When I looked at the guys showing available on the graduate transfer market a couple days ago on ESPN it was extremely bare. Do you have anyone in mind that Miles might be considering? We really do need a depth guy at the very least.

I'll post a list in a bit. Right now I'm seeing 33 guys available including non-guards, guys kicked off their teams for being awful, and/or walk-ons.

I went through the list after class today to see if there were anyone that roughly fits AW3 mold. I also eliminated guys that had character issues. One guy that was intriguing to me that hadn't committed anywhere is Kellen McCormick from Western Michigan. He's 6'8", immediately eligible, and he can fill it in from 3. Shot 46% from three and hit 9 in one game. He wouldn't be an all conf player but maybe a warm body that could spread the floor?

He has not committed anywhere, Ga Tech, USC involved.

He's someone to look at but he's not a guard
I think McCormick would be a great addition to the team.

When AW3 left, Nebraska lost a 6'7"-6'8" player that spread the floor and made 3s. His natural position is the 3-spot (small forward). I don't think many people would say that Nebraska lost a ball handling guard when AW3 left. Nebraska lost a 6'7" shooter. Nebraska's best returning 3-point % is Tai at 35% and McVeigh at 34%

Kellen McCormick is 6'8", immediately eligible, and can stroke it from 3. (46% from 3. Hit 9 in one game). I would say that he helps to fill the void that AW3 will leave on this team. Especially considering that the alternative is carrying 2 open scholarships next season to continue on with Nebraska's continual self-imposed sanctions. He may not be as good as AW3, but he could help to lessen the blow of losing him by at least providing some of the things that AW3 gave Nebraska. Also, getting McCormick doesn't mean that Nebraska can't also go after a grad transfer that fits more into the traditional ball-handling/shooting guard role. There are 2 open scholarships.

Polish Rifle made a great point. He told me "a guy like McCormick could be like Wragge was at Creighton and open up the floor for Gill, Tai, and Glynn." I agree with this 100% and I don't see the harm in exploring an option like this, rather than just leaving the scholarship open.

Agree with this 100%. Evelyn was far from a world beater in terms of talent but I think he could have been a solid player for us. Personally, I think his shooting percentages were so poor bc in the limited garbage time he recieved he was pushing too hard instead of letting the game come to him.

He played a lot of his time with the walkons. If he didn't shoot it quick one them would turn it over. When that group was on the floor, it looked obvious to me that he was the only that could even pass for a D-1 basketball player.

Technically not a transfer, in the traditional sense: Incoming FROSH 6'-6" Kobe Paras has withdrawn from UCLA.

Maybe a situation like that would present an opportunity for us.

 

Or maybe there's a guy who won't get gain admission to the school he's chosen -- say Vanderbilt or what have you -- and will need to find a decent team with an open spot (we have two!)

Seems like that would be a nice pull, but do we have anything that would connect us with him? All his offers were on the west coast except for one in Texas.

3 years with 2 to play (since he will need to sit out a season). Previously redshirted at NMSU.

 

 

New Mexico St is a bit of a roster mess right now with now 12 scholarship guys to go with 3 verbal commits which is a bit odd since their new head coach Paul Weir was a former assistant and not a newcomer.  Marvin Menzies left for UNLV
