If you experience gastroesphogeal reflux that wakes you at 1:30 a.m. ...

If you get symptoms of GERD and they tell you that you can manage the symptoms by changing your diet, which do you give up?

  1. 1. If you can manage the symptoms of gastroesophogeal reflux by giving up one or more of the following, which would you do without?

    • fatty foods, like, oh, I don't know, BACON?
      3
    • chocolate
      7
    • alcohol, which includes your favorite beer
      7
    • carbonated drinks

    • citrus foods/juices
      6
    • spicy foods
      7
    • tomato sauce

    • screw it, I guess I'm gonna have GERD

Which option do you go without?

Pick as many as apply.

As for me?  You can take away my spicy, alcoholic, tomato-based, carbonated chocolate when you pry it from my cold dead stomache.

Meanwhile, I guess I'll be up posting stupid stuff on HHC at 1:40 a.m.

Edited to add:  By the way, you can't vote to do without something you don't already regularly consume, OK?

Speaking of things I'm not giving up, here's a quick recipe that includes at least 3 of the above things I'm not supposed to have ...

Take about a pound of cherry tomatoes, slice them in half and throw them into a large glass bowl along with ...

about 4-5 large cloves of garlic, smashed

a good pinch of red pepper flakes

quarter cup of extra virgin olive oil

kosher or sea salt to taste (plus a little extra because you have to account for the pasta)

freshly cracked black pepper

Stir to mix and let the tomatoes marinade in their own juices plus the EVOO.  Let sit.

Meanwhile, boil your pasta ... farfale or penne work well for this dish.

Chifanade some basil.

Cut up some fresh mozzerella into bite-sized pieces.  Add to the bowl of tomatoes.

When the pasta is al dente (still slightly firm -- don't overcook) drain and immediately add to the bowl of tomatoes and mozzerella cheese.  Stir in the chifanade of basil along with the rest of the ingredients and serve (with some red vino).

The residual heat from the pasta will melt the fresh mozzerella and tomatoes sufficiently to cook the sauce.

Sublime.  Good to pair with a grilled, fatty cut of ribeye.  Or fatty salmon.

I'm up because I have my arm strapped to my side which makes it uncomfortable to sleep. I had shoulder surgery two weeks ago. but I did pick a few.

Too many curve balls when you were young?
I wish, I'm a lefty and the right one was tore to hell. It was a Pretty extensive repair.

Dude that sucks. I will never bitch about trying to sleep with a sun burn again. Showering with a sun burn is a different story...

I'd say in order of things I'd give up from first to never:

1. chocolate

2. spicy foods

3. citrus

4. tomato

5. alcohol

5a. fatty foods.

I already basically don't drink carbonated beverages anyway.

Why not just give up none of those things and take some medication instead?

I get horrible nighttime reflux but whenever I take acid reducers before bed, I wake up with awful stomach pain. Reflux is a tricky monster

I still get heartburn/GERD every once in awhile but a few years ago I had it every single day.  Did all the test...doctor visits and didn't find much.  Turns out my stomach was literally in knots due to anxiety.   Once I had that under control my gerd went away for the most part.
