Big Ten due for a shake-up next season - by Jon Rothstein

Recommended Posts

Minnesota has had some off-the-court issues recently with big man Reggie Lynch (suspension), but still possess enough to make a leap towards the middle of the conference standings.

Richard Pitino adds a top-40 freshman in Amir Coffey and two potential perimeter starters in Milwaukee transfer Akeem Springs (13.2 points in 15-16) and Texas A&M transfer Davonte Fitzgerald to go with a strong one-two punch of Nate Mason and Jordan Murphy.

And Rutgers?

Well, Rutgers is going to be better because frankly it can't be much worse.

What does all this mean?

The Big Ten is looking like it's going to be in tiers next season.

Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan State, and potentially Purdue if Caleb Swanigan returns will be at the top with a host of other programs bunched up behind them.

Iowa and Maryland will each have a completely different look in 2016-17 while Ohio State and Michigan both return key pieces from last year, but they don't look like vintage Ohio State and Michigan either.

That leaves Northwestern, Nebraska, and Penn State-- which added an elite recruiting class -- left to battle things out in the league standings, which look wide open after the first three or four teams.

If you're a program in the Big Ten that's had its share of rough years, next season is the time to make your move.

Rothstein's commentary is more geared toward Illinois, Minnesota, and Rutgers improving through recruiting this year. And he throws in PSU, Nebraska, and NW in that category as well.'

It will be interesting to see how teams 5-10 wind up in the B1G in 2016-17.

I can understand why we don't get a lot of love, given that we finished - what - 9th and 11th the last two years and our leading scorer is gone.  But I've seen two recent predictions that Minny is better than us mainly because of Coffey.  I'm not seeing it.

He's no panacea, the Coffey kid.  They have more problems than one kid can fix.

May not be a panacea, but I am unable to start my work day without some coffee.

Illini-high by Jon R:

He's been wrong before, but he's willing to be wrong again...

I don't like when people speculate based on some wild-ass presupposition.  If there weren't any injuries, Illinois would be a tournament team.  And if there wasn't any gravity, I'd be a five-time slam dunk champion

Well, no, because if there weren't any gravity, you'd jump and you'd just keep floating until you bounced off of something.  I think it's Newton's first law of motion.  Anyway, so I could see you winning it once if there wasn't gravity, but after that you'd be waving as you passed Saturn.

Joe Lunardi has 8 BIG teams in:

I don't buy Iowa. They lost a lot and they never seem like they're that well-coached.

I'd sell on Iowa also... Getting Jok back does not make them anything special.

As far as the coaching.... Meh, I'm not sure I agree with you there. But that's probably just a style argument so no big deal.
