Notre Dame thinking about applying for a hardship waiver for Shepard?

Glimpses this summer by McGraw of her own team’s future were muddled a bit by uncertainty in the present.

Specifically when it comes to senior post player Brianna Turner.

The rehab on her surgically repaired left knee has gone smoothly with no setbacks, but the decision on whether the two-time All-American will play at all in the coming season won’t likely be made until September

    Quote

If Turner is not available this season, repeating and refining the small-ball approach is one option.

Another might be plugging the 6-foot-4, Jessica Shepard into the lineup. Maybe.

McGraw said the Irish are exploring whether applying for a hardship waiver for immediate eligibility for Shepard makes sense. As it stands, the former national Freshman of the Year and All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore at Nebraska must sit out the coming season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules.

“I think we have to plan on not having Jessica this season,” McGraw said, “but we’re going to put the paperwork together and see what happens.”

To be blunt, here's hoping the NCAA doesn't grant her the waiver should Notre Dame apply for it, for the crap she pulled on her teammates the past two years!!!

  5. Anyone else?!.........just kidding!  :P

Thanks for the kind remarks above guys they're appreciated. I actually think we have one of the top collegiate wbb message boards out there. There are some teams with none even in the B1G. I love to read what HB or Hud or Norm Petersen or anyone else who writes here, whether you agree or disagree, whether they have 2 posts or 15,000 posts to this forum, in my opinion everyone who contributes to our corner of the  cyber-world make this place great.

  6. Back when Dollar Bill Byrne let Paul Sanderford go back in 2002, word being spread around that the new coach would be one with a proven track record or a well-qualified assistant. Word going around in different circles was that Nebraska was looking at Southwest Missouri St’s Cheryl Burnett, Tennessee assistant now head coach Holly Warlock who at one time was an assistant here at Nebraska, and Theresa Becker who had been the head coach at Iowa St and a former NU assistant under Angela Beck.

Imagine my surprise when he announced the new coach as Connie Yori. I’ll be honest and say I absolutely hated that hire and didn’t expect much. She started her career at NU with an 8-20 record. If I remember right there were like 200 season ticket holders at the time and she always referred to us as her core group of fans from the get go which filled me with a sense of pride as she progressed the program to where she took it.  Needless to say, I eventually forgave “Dollar Bill” for the hire.

I was skeptical as to how her second year here would pan out just like fans are right now with Coach Williams. Coach Yori’s second year produced an 18-12 record and a berth in the WNIT tournament, she eventually turned that into the undefeated regular season in 2010 in which a lot of today’s fans jumped on the band wagon.  Which was fine by me on both accounts.

There honesty isn’t a week that goes by now that someone doesn’t ask me how this new coach will do in her second season. And comparing her to what Coach Yori did I don’t think is fair. I usually tell them we need to give her time.

Now, I’m not saying Coach Williams needs to equal what Coach Yori did or do better and I’m not ready and probably won’t be for a while to make a win-loss prediction. But as I look at the somewhat easy non-conference schedule and what I think will be a down year in the B1G I at least see her going 500 or better her second year. That all depends on one thing though, we must keep Rachel Blackburn healthy all season. She is the backbone and leader of this team and it does no good with her riding bench.  She in my belief is the key to making this upcoming season a success.

Anyone see Nebraska Girls facebook page. There is a status that says who's next?? Are we getting another recruit??

No we're not getting another recruit just yet anyway. The coaches are starting to evaluate the 2019 class. The AAU circuit began last week and the coaches are scattered all across the nation watching for that next Husker. Saying "who's next" is their way of putting the 2019 class on alert that they'll be on the lookout nationwide for that next big commit.

  8. I failed to mention that isn't the only honor she was awarded with this spring. Emily also earned the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award across all the Husker women's sports in 2016-17. She was named one of Nebraska's Outstanding Scholar Award winners across all sports for her performance in the classroom. She is expected to be a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for the second consecutive year in 2017, and is a two-time academic All-Big Ten choice.

How many exhibition games do we play?

Previously we've typically played two exhibition games but last year we only had one. That could be because we played in the early pre-season WNIT too.  Not sure if another one will be scheduled or not, could be that the new coaching staff would rather play one than two. I'm guessing just one this year also.

  10. Yes, it occurs but not as much as in the NBA. Three years ago Minnesota's Amanda Zahui B left after her junior season and the following year Michigan State's Aerial Powers declared early for the draft. Others have declared early from other conferences but those are two recent examples of players from the B1G. If I remember correctly Britany Griner was one of the first underclassmen to declare early.

  11. The B1G/ACC Challenge was announced this morning and the Huskers drew Clemson.

With the help of her AAU coach, John Reilly from Hudson Valley Elite, Cain got her name out in recruiting circles once again. Schools that were on her original list had already filled needs so Cain sought schools that still had scholarship spots available. She visited Nebraska, Dayton, Virginia and Minnesota, and also got calls from Indiana, UCLA, Oregon and others. Cain said she had the same “gut feeling” about Nebraska as she had for Delaware and made the confirmation phone call a week ago. She signed her final papers on Friday.

“She will fit in very nicely in the Big Ten,” said Nebraska coach Amy Williams. “There’s absolutely no reason she can’t come in and make an impact for our program.”

Williams likes Cain’s size, her good hands, her soft touch around the basket and ability to use either hand with her back to the basket.

“That low-post presence is something that will fit really nicely into our system and we’re very excited about that,” Williams said.

Cain reports to Nebraska on July 9 for summer prep and studies. She will major in some sort of business studies.

“I really am excited just to get everything started,” Cain said. “I am definitely a little nervous because everything changed so much within the past month ... so I’m definitely overwhelmed, but I am really excited to see what the future has in store for me.”

Delaware’s coaching change in women’s basketball has cost the Blue Hens a top recruit.

Kate Cain, the 6-foot-5 center from Pine Bush (N.Y.) High, has reopened her recruiting, said her high school coach Bill Lacovara.

She is now considering Nebraska, Indiana, Minnesota, Virginia, Dayton and Oklahoma, he said.

Cain, who signed with Delaware last fall, averaged 25 points, 22 rebounds and eight blocks per game as a senior this past season and was touted as the Colonial Athletic Association’s No. 1 recruit by All-Star Girls Report. Delaware released Cain from her National Letter of Intent.

Tina Martin retired as Delaware coach April 28 – she has since been hired as an assistant at CAA rival UNC-Wilmington – and former Georgetown coach Natasha Adair is the new Delaware coach. Adair was unavailable for comment Thursday.

  14. Sounds like the Huskers have received a verbal from 6-5 Kate Cain a 4 star post from Middletown, NY. Cain who will be a freshman this fall (should be eligible to play right away,) had originally signed with Delaware, but was granted her released after the Delaware head coach resigned last April. ESPN has her ranked as the 82nd best player in the 2017 class and 10th at her position.
