Well Payne seems to be out of the picture so we don't have to worry about that. Same for Hugley. And although they didn't play, guys like Kojenets, Keita and Diop were all recruited here and had no outside shooting ability. So I think Fred is comfortable having at least 1 or 2 bigs on the roster who are not a threat from outside.
Fred absolutely loved Jameel McKay, who I think William Kyle is a carbon copy of. He can do a lot with a real lob threat who can run the floor like a deer.

After those two, I am pretty flexible. I would maybe flex towards youth/projects/specialists.
Agreed. We could take another portal guard, but seems like Hoiberg is being very honest about what players' roles will be to avoid any locker room issues so I'm not sure one will want to come at this point. It appears that we're recruiting as if we'll have two bigs on the floor the majority of the time, like with Allick and Mast this year. That means Gary would be slotted to play ~20 mpg at the "3" (and likely still some at the 4). So, you'd have 80 mpg at the 1 and 2 and roughly 20 mpg at the 3 (100 minutes total) to divvy up between Williams, Griffith, Ulis, Worster, Hoiberg, Janowski and possibly another guard. At least two of those players wouldn't be in the rotation. We're not going to play 11 guys.

I very much doubt that the NCAA is going to give Ulis back a year. I'll leave it to the reader at this point to decide if Mast is going to redshirt next year because of surgery recovery.
I thought Washut had said it was a possibility on Ulis but I/he could be wrong

Helpful to reference who we have
G Ahron Ulis - 6'3" - SR
G Rollie Worster - 6'4" - SR
G Brice Williams - 6'7" - SR
G Sam Hoiberg - 6'0" - JR
G Gavin Griffiths - 6'8" Soph
G Nick Janowski - 6'3" FR
F Juwan Gary - 6'6" - SR
F Rienk Mast - 6'10" - SR
F Andrew Morgan 6'10" - SR
F Braden Frager 6'6" - FR
------------------------------
Gary, Juwan Ahron Ulis Williams, Brice Mast, Rienk Worster, Rollie Morgan, Andrew Griffiths, Gavin Janowski, Nick Frager, Braden Seems like prioritizing guys who might be here past next season should be highly considered.
It's possible Mast and Ulis could be "juniors" eligibility wise next season.

After the A&M game, everyone wanted us to go get more athleticism, length and perimeter defense in the portal. Seems like we're achieving that while still trying to get players who fit what we do offensively.
Just comparing the current roster to last year's rotation from a physical perspective:
G - Keisei Tominaga - Rollie Worster. Massive upgrade in size, athleticism and defense.
G - Jamarques Lawrence - Ahron Ulis. Similar size and athleticism. Both good defenders.
G - Sam Hoiberg = Sam Hoiberg
W - Brice Williams = Brice Williams
W - CJ Wilcher - Gavin Griffiths. Massive upgrade in length and athleticism. Should eventually be a defensive upgrade.
F - Juwan Gary = Juwan Gary
F/C - Josiah Allick - We'll see. William Kyle is longer and more athletic than 99% of college basketball players.
C - Rienk Mast - Andrew Morgan. If Mast does sit out next year. Seems to be a slight upgrade in length. Definite upgrade in athleticism and defense compared to an injured Mast.

Between Blaise, Lloyd and Ulis we ended up with three scholarships that contributed nothing to the games. We should pry expect 2-3 scholarships to have little to no impact each season, so we still have some work to do.
And can we all agree to not get too overexcited about the token 6’11” high ceiling 17 year old we bring in this summer to be on the scout team next season

So the kid from Iowa is a guarantee? One I don't feel all that great about that play
Ulis isn’t leaving. And the staff loves him

I sure hope we will still take Kyle and Milicic... nothing against him, because I know we need younger guys too. I just want to win next year
We’d absolutely take both of those guys if they want to come here. I’d imagine they are 1A and 1B on the board

Love this addition

Similar to another early Fred player who happened to get drafted and now is playing meaningful minutes in the league? If you're talking Worster, I think he's more similar to Griesel than anyone else we've had.
If you're talking Griffiths, his play style is more similar to Jamarques Lawrence than anyone else, as far as how fast he plays and how quick he makes decisions.

Then that makes more sense. I'm actually surprised he'd sit out rather than just go back to Europe.
The free surgery, recovery and rehab at UNMC would be reason to stay. I'd be more worried about him leaving after all that is done, but maybe that'll be part of the NIL contract.

I think Milicic is really good....but if Mast, Morgan and Kyle all come....I don't see why he is coming here. There's going to be a log jam of minutes there, especially since Gary can play the 4 at times too.
Sounding like Mast is going to have surgery and sit out all of next season. If so, I'd be surprised if we didn't take 3 bigs. There are 80 minutes to go around at the 4/5 spots, so in that scenario Morgan, Kyle and Milicic could/would all play about as many minutes as they did for their teams this past season.

Last game of the year and Dalano is firing away. Currently 0-15 from behind the arc.

Indiana just got a real good player. Myles Rice

Got to think Kyle would like our on-court pitch. The Josiah Allick (++) role. But more ideally for Fred and William, the Jameel McKay role. Very similar players. 6'9", long, bouncy, defensive-minded. Fred's last year at Iowa State McKay was the Big 12 DPOY and 3rd team all-conference.
The 3-4-5 on that team was Hogue-Niang-McKay. Hogue looks and plays an awful lot like Juwan Gary. Hoiberg has talked a lot about how he uses Mast in the same way he used Niang in the offense. The point guard on that team was Monte Morris (c'mon Chucky).

I was listening to Sharp's show when he announced that Fidler would name his school on Monday. He made an interesting comment about how Fidler was lucky that he had two high character local head coaches (Fred and Greg) that gave him an honest evaluation of where they see him fitting at a Power 5/6 school. He didn't elaborate but just said that the portal world was tough because you have a lot of people out there that aren't being honest with kids about their roles.
Wisconsin fans think they pitched him the AJ Storr role. Frankie liked being "the guy" for Omaha. I am interested to see what he chose. Stay close to home and take on a lesser role where he's not the primary scorer. Or buy the snake oil that Gard is selling.

Everyone is turning down the Kentucky job. Jay Wright, Billy Donovan, Scott Drew, Nate Oats, Danny Hurley. Hopefully they end up hiring Brad Underwood. Bruce Pearl is probably the only one left with the personality to be able to deal with that circus.

Our injuries seemed pretty on par, but the longer duration seemed to affect the back end of the rotation more so than the front end which is why I think it was less noticeable.Keisei missed time to start, Mast missed multiple games. Sure. But the long duration injuries seemed to happen to our backend of the rotation. Rice, Kieta, maybe Ramel if that was an injury.
Something I was really impressed and happy with during the season is how our play as a team wasn't really affected when 1 or more of our rotation guys were out. Keisei, Juwan, Mast, Josiah, CJ all missed at least one game. It didn't matter, we kinda just looked the same regardless. Still put a quality product on the floor. Kansas looked like a dang mid-major team when one or both of their two best players were out. That type of piss poor roster construction should never happen at Kansas. Bill Self may continue to struggle now that everyone else can pay players too.

2024 Portal Watch

Nick Kern and Zach Hicks are both similar in stature to Eli but they are tenacious defenders and they play exactly the way Mike Rhoades wants to play. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Eli in the portal again next year.
