  1. Hey guys. I'm glad we got to play you guys early. I think there's a good possibility you'll be pretty tough starting around February. Your length was a real problem for UW in the first third of the game. I hope you don't mind me saying that I really didn't like Allen getting his fourth foul and walking straight to the locker room. Maybe he had to take a bio break and I'm completely misinterpreting, but it was a bad look. He seems selfish. It was also telling that no teammate or coach tried to go over to calm him down. Anyway, that was my negative impression of that guy - he's got some game, but don't like what I see on the attitude. Banton is a star, though.
  2. Oh yes, I faintly remember (and may be misremembering) a minor uproar because Ferragamo got to wear #5 which had been Hornung's retired number.
  3. Good write up. The only minor quibble I'd have is that Wahl and Reuvers (who went to the same high school, but 2 years apart) aren't quite the same skill set. Reuvers is more skilled shooter, and Wahl is more of an athlete/energizer bunny. Wahl can also guard just about any position - he's a handy guy to have, except for shooting.
  4. I live in the Twin Cities now and have for a long time. I don't think Schmidt is still around, is it? None of my cohort would say Starr led seamlessly to Favre. I remember the David Whitehurst era. Also, I have a #12 Packers jersey - but I got it when that was Lynn Dickey. Didn't the pack have a Nebraska QB once? Jerry Tagge, maybe?
  5. Great information. Bo Ryan was an early adopter of using points per possession as the key metric, going back to his D3 days at UW-Platteville. How well do you think the squad - and particularly your guards - will be able to be patient? I'm of the belief that it's much easier to dictate a slow tempo than fast, and fast teams can sometimes get frustrated with that.
  6. I have questions for you. What are your thoughts on: Transfers vs recruits (no judgment-UW plays two transfers); Teddy Allen's usage rate is high with a middling offensive rating; Dalano Banton is the most complete player on the squad; Pace is 28th fastest vs. UW 324th. (note the use of semicolons)
  7. The bad times make the breakthrough sweeter. I know from experience. I have been to Car Henge. Does that get me any 'braska cred? Does anybody spend more than 10 minutes there?
  8. Well, I'm not gonna win over 49r... It does give me a little jolt to hear our fanbase described as hyper-entitled. Cue Barry Manilow: "LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT" (note the correct usage of the full colon). A sense of humor and thick skin are wonderful things... (note the use of an ellipsis)
  9. Well, the opposite of love is indifference, not hate. I hate every B1G team to varying degrees except one whose colors are red and white and is situated in the state capitol named after a president. And is on a lakefront.... Also realize that people over 50 like me grew up with teams that sucked for decades, including our pro teams like the Packers. We appreciate where we are now. The people under about 40 have a different perspective.
  10. Kaminsky, and it's not all that close. No swipe at Happ intended as he was great for what he was, but Frank was NPOY. The second pair is harder, but you have to go Devin, who was clearly the more talented player. However, I had Jordan Taylor as my avatar for several years. As for Husker players that stood out, I don't remember many before you joined the league - Tyronn Lue, but no one else springs to mind. Petteway is the first guy I think of, though, and wasn't there a Shields with him? Also Ed Morrow because he ended up with Marquette. Sorry if my lack of knowledge about the Husker history is < your knowledge of Badgers'.
  11. Very good question. They said he was injured during the telecast against Louisville. He had been the 9th man in the early games, and doing fairly well against the inferior opponents. He did not do so well against the bigs of Marquette, however, and hasn't played a lot since. He seems like he needs to hit the weight room a bit, which is not uncommon for a freshman big. We have a second, even skinnier, freshman 7-footer from MN named Crowl who can eat 5-6 minutes, if needed. Both of those guys have bright futures, but they're playing behind experienced and talented bigs, and most opponents go small, so there is less need to go to the bench for a 3rd guy who can play C (or 4th or 5th guy that can play the 4). UW goes defense-first, so Gard looks to see if they can guard one of the opponents' players before looking to take advantage offensively.
  12. Just FYI, there's no (2nd) d in Davison (well, no 3rd d if you count his first name) . He does have a reputation.
  13. Um, I don't know. I guess I should've added "about UW basketball" after the "ask me anything" part, but I thought it was implied...
  14. Finley. Though I should probably say Tracy Webster...
  15. Hello, Nebrasketball fans. I come in peace wanting to discuss your upcoming game tomorrow. I saw a little bit of discussion in the pinned thread, so if pulling this out is not kosher, I apologize. If you haven't seen the Badgers this year, they returned all 5 starters who are all seniors. Not a single player made first or second team of the B1G last year, even though they were co-champions, a testament to the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. 3 bench players play a lot - another senior, who's the backup PG, and a sophomore and a freshman. They've shot lights out from 3 the last two games (60% combined) against Louisville and Loyola, so they may be due to come back to earth a little. The number of shots taken is pretty even among the starters (I think each of them average between 8 and 12 points). 7 of the 8 in the rotation are excellent 3 point shooters. And, like every UW team for 25 years, they don't turn over the ball much. Defense has been its normal good self, always man-to-man. UW - somewhat surprisingly - is one of the leaders in blocked shots in the country. Reuvers just became the school's all-time leader. They do not cause a lot of turnovers, though. The pace will be, um, deliberate. Usually, that's because UW takes its time on offense, but this year, the defensive possessions have actually been slower (so far) than the offense. Downsides: they are not excellent at offensive rebounds, and the bigs have been in a fair amount of foul trouble. They got beat at Marquette on a missed FT tipin at the buzzer, but the story of that game was that Marquette got UW in foul trouble and had a huge advantage at the FT line. As a Badger fan, this is the greatest concern in league play because of all the great big men. Ask me anything.
  16. PS, Kobe King (the supposed outside shooter), was the only rotation player for UW not to make a 3...
  17. I suspect some cut and paste issues, here. First, the Badgers are 11-7. Second, they are the Badgers, not the Hoosiers, and they will go 9 deep. And Armaan Franklin is not a Badger. Kobe King is far from an exclusive outside shooter-he's the slasher-type of player. He is a mid-range shooter, however.
  18. Hello folks. Just bumping this thread for our game in a few minutes. Your team has really circled the wagons and I'd not be surprised to see your guys pull off another one. The biggest difference for Bucky lately is the play of Iverson - he waited until the last month of his senior season, but he's turned into a primary offensive threat (in addition to his normally stellar defense). He and Happ have both had double doubles the last two games. The starting guards have struggled with their shooting, but Pritzl has been red hot - he just doesn't get many shots. Reuvers hasn't been that good offensively for a while, and is showing all sorts of tentativeness in even taking a shot. The defense is up to #4 nationally, which has been the overwhelming key to the season as they struggle offensively - teams have figured out usable strategies to combat Happ (and not just hacking). Have fun, folks.
  19. This is an insightful question. There've been times when Iverson is the best individual defender on the team. He draws tough assignments from positions 1 through 4. UW is more of a team defense than individual, but his defense is his primary contribution to the team. That being said, he is in danger of losing his playing time to Kobe King, because Iverson is a terrible shooter (highlight reel dunker, though). King is serviceable on D, but a much better shooter. There can be offensive issues when both Iverson and Happ - neither of which can shoot outside 5 feet - are on the court.
  20. Well, Davison is the classic guy who you love if he's on your team and hate if he's not. Especially on defense where he makes refs make block-charge calls a lot - he now has a reputation for flopping, so there have been instances where he's taken legit charges but gets called for the block, maybe because of the reputation. Boy cries wolf, but he is generally in good position. Do not play a drinking game for every time he is picking himself up off the floor, though. He had to play PG last year because of Trice's injury. This year, he's had some adjustments to playing with Trice - there have been games where he disappears a bit offensively, but lately the team has adapted by having him playing with the ball more. He takes and makes the contested shot better than anyone on the team, Happ included. The team turns to Davison a lot when Happ is having trouble. Trice is a better shooter overall, but he's smaller and needs more space to get his normal shot. In fact, Trice had been in a bit of a slump until Saturday - if he's on, UW is hard to deal with.
  21. Hey guys, Wisconsin fan dropping by. Love the tempo-free analytics - I, too, am a devotee. I co-write a post on buckyville called "box score observations" that looks at these sort of metrics after every game. I had the last game, so my partner has this one. Sucks about Copeland. I think you have the horses to make up for him on the offensive production end, but what are your thoughts about making up for his defense? I've seen some posts about zone - the truth is that not many teams have employed that against UW this year, so I can't comment intelligently except to say that UW is always fundamentally sound and spaces the floor exceptionally well. Happ is really an elite passer, too, so I'd expect him to flash to the FT line and find the open man pretty regularly against that. But, like I said, haven't seen a lot of zone this year, so not a lot of experience attacking it. In attacking man defense, everything centers around Happ. Happ is a good ballhandler and will even bring the ball up court a lot, but he will turn it over from time to time. Some teams aggressively double team Happ when he has the ball in the post (drawback: sets up the assist and 3-ball), and some try to do the best they can one-on-one and try to not let the other players beat them. UW has lost games when Happ scores a lot of points, so that latter strategy has some logic. Illinois, of all teams, actually did a very creditable job on Happ with the former strategy, too, but couldn't make shots on the other end. Reuvers is different from Happ (duh) in that he isn't as crafty in the post - mostly power - but he is a decent 3-point shooter, which makes him a difficult assignment for most bigs. Any questions for me?
  22. Please don't take my presence here as an effort to troll - I am an aficionado of looking for key stats, especially in tight games. The stat combo here that stands out to me is that Nebraska had 20 offensive rebounds, but only 7 second chance points.
  23. All that means it that there's a big swing between floor and ceiling. We expect teams will play nearer to their ceiling against us. UW needed a minor miracle to beat Rutgers in OT in NYC. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  24. What you're seeing, despite the statistics, is a healthy respect for what Nebraska has been able to do against Wisconsin. You beat UW in the last game of the regular season in your first season at the new arena, which was also one of the years UW made the final four - we were a great team that year, and your beating us in that game was not fluky. The other game you beat us was in last year's BTT - maybe a bit more of a poor showing on our part in that one, but the vast majority of conference opponents haven't been able to pull those types of games out against us. You also beat Purdue this year who we got outclassed by - granted our game was in WL, but PU's had our number for awhile. Lastly, UW's last few games were unimpressive on the offensive side - haven't been hitting on all cylinders for awhile now. So, I'm gonna have to go ahead, and, um, disagree with ya there. There is some reason for concern.
