  3. Moos doesn't need a full year. He had that already. The guy was hired in the middle of October and didn't attend a game until Wisconsin in January. I look at that and think this guy just ignored the second highest revenue generating program for 3 months. That's some great AD-ing there. By the way, Frost was hired two weeks before the Kansas game and Moos couldn't drag himself to that. What it boils down to is that any of us could have been the AD to hire Frost as long as we let the puppeteers pull the strings and everyone behind the scenes do the legwork like Moos did. If Moos was a real AD he would have been at the biggest home game in years, especially since the football staff was already back at UCF. Everything about the way he handled basketball the past month stinks whether it be from not making Kenya an offer he couldn't refuse to stay and keep recruiting up or dragging the extension out over a month only to make it for a year. To anyone with a brain this seems like the puppeteers are pulling the strings again and they couldn't fire Miles after 22 wins so they decided to do the best they can to make it an impossible situation for future success.

  4. Sure. But what proof is there that Moos will have his guy next year or the year after that. AD get paid to make tough decisions in the here and now and Moos punted.

  6. Let's talk about that tweet they sent out yesterday. It looks like everyone is there, working hard. They showed a ton of JPJ, Cope and Roby. I don't know it gave me hope that maybe just maybe all our doubts, doomsday fears, negative bs we've been feeling the past few weeks isn't as bad as we thought. Maybe, these young guns like playing together and are bought in. Maybe they are ready to take the next step, because they came so close last. Yes, we need a new recruiting coordinator/assistant coach that can bring in talent. The X-Man decommitment sucks. But I remain hopeful until it all blows up in my face that we could have another good year next year.

  11. I know everyone on this board wants to talk about the big picture, but not everyone is that involved in Nebraska Basketball. To the casual observer, the team just won 22 games and certainly, they would have no sense of a flop having taken place.

  12. I live in Iowa currently...They extended Fran McCaffrey through like 2024 give or take a year....and Apathy is starting to simmer with the fanbase. An Extension to a coach that has mediocre results does not sit well with the average fan who looks at a an extension until 2024 and thinks, we are stuck with Fran for the next 6 years even if they continue to suck...believe me they sure were pissing an moaning about Ferrentz's extensions too. Is recruiting a little harder, maybe...but I think it is way over stated how contract length affects a recruits attitude about a school...Now a coach on the hot seat that will affect a recruit...but as many have stated on this board, the extension to 5 years doesn't mean anything because Miles would be fired after next year if the season is not up to expectations....so players and potential recruits see that as well. I think an announcement my Moos that Miles was extended to 2024 would not have sat well with the average fan...who looks at his record and says 97-97...gets you 6 more years...I guess we are happy to just field a team.

  13. Nebraska Basketball is my number one. I also watch every Nebraska Football game I can. I would watch the basketball game and follow the football game on my phone. I would switch over if either was going to be close at the end and the other wasn't but all other things being equal Nebrasketball all the way.

  16. I think he is a must get for this staff. Hear me out: Through the Sadler and Miles eras, we have constantly relied on diamonds in the rough or out-of-state players. While many of those guys have been my favorites through the years, how many NCAA tournament wins have they gotten us? We all know the answer to that. I am ready to see us taking more chances on in-state kids. No offense to guys like Thor, who might turn out to be great, but why not focus more on kids within a 50-to-100 mile radius. I find it somewhat sad we take chances on kids from Iceland and Australia, yet not very often with the locals. With Chang's height and length, as well as his shooting ability and athleticism, to me, he is a no-brainer. I understand that grades could be a hold up. However if they are not, we need to get him. If Creighton beats us out, consider me pissed.

  19. The obvious answer is that if Moos cared one iota about Nebrasketball, then he would have had a teleportation transfer devise to go back and forth between both. Duh!

  22. Well then it would be pretty silly for us to send an assistant coach to the West Coast to watch the young man work out if there weren't at least some mutual interest in one another wouldn't ya think?

  23. Good to have both MSU and Purdue. Maryland should be improved as should Iowa. Illinois might be a chance for a sweep and Minny is a toss up. One winnable and two winnable but challenging road games. Then we also get tOSU at home. Like that a lot more than this year.

  26. If it's the same it will be 2.52M on April 1st of 2019. The amount is 105K per month which is $1.26M/year With a 2 year extension it would have been 3,78M at the end of 2019 and 5.04M if it had been 3.

  28. http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/mens-basketball/coach/ Even extended to 5 years it would be one of the cheaper buyouts in the conference. One could make the argument that football $$ fuels the school so football should get the lionshare of money to firing coaches

  34. But if Moos didn't have his guy lined up...wouldn't firing Miles and hiring another guy, who isn't the right guy, and will inevitably be here 4-5 years at minimum also be sacrificing the long term healthy of the program?
    1 point
  35. Thanks! I was too lazy to look it up. I really think if he make the tournament next year he's gonna be a lot more attractive than some believe.

  36. I can't speak for everyone else, but I'm going to anyway ?. Disclosure - I like Miles and want him to succeed and thought he could have. With that said I think what draws the ire of most is what a dumb decision a 1 year extention is for the overall health of the program. I would have been completely fine if the last AD fired him last year or the new AD fired him this year. Would I have been a little upset and salty for a bit? Sure. See the disclosure above. But I won't argue he has shown beyond any reasonable doubt he deserves to be here. After next year look at roster. It slim pickins. I think we can all agree Miles bread and butter has been the transfer market for recruiting. And the last AD and now this AD have essentially cut his legs out from under him each of the last two seasons. So if at this point you don't believe in a guy get rid of him. Don't sacrifice the long term health of the program because you are indecisive and need your mind made up for you. The arguments against Miles are the data is there he is what he is. And thats fine. I can't even really argue against it. But don't in the same breadth then tell me the 1 year extention was the right decision.

  37. The girls to college basketball jobs comparison has no end.....every coach looking for a loyal & attractive girl, unfortunately all the loyal girls are taken or, to put it bluntly, they are ugly. All the attractive girls will dump you in a second for something better. That would probably make us a butterface.
    1 point
  38. Just so I'm on the same page - in this hypothetical Miles would leave for Minny because he has connections to the state right? Because Miles leaving Nebraska after 7 years, for Minny whose fired their last two coaches after 6 years (with considerably more success than Miles) seems like it would be the equivalent to leaving a loyal girl to go date one of the Kardashians.
    1 point
  39. Miles has made a considerable amount of money now coaching where making as much or more money somewhere doesn't need to be the end all. In a very very hypothetical if Minny fired Pitino and offered Miles the job for $1.8M don't you think he'd take it?
    1 point
  40. This is where I disagree with you. To me the argument you are making boils it down to just record. It takes out history. We historically suck on epic levels compared to other power 5 schools. I don't believe an AD will only look at record. If Miles gets us to the tournament next year it will be postseason 3 out of 7 years and tournament 2 of 7. After an almost 20 year absence before he got here. One of our best conference finishes ever. And if he gets a win it will literally be at the last power 5 school to do so. All the while being hamstrung be his own administration for a solid 3 years straight. I think he looks a lot better on paper than just a record.

  41. Miles gets an extension and if he takes it, will get beaten down for having a bad year in years 2 and 3. Sure the extension was ok for the now, but it was bad for the the few years following the next two.

  43. When they announced the one-year extension, my son sent me a text that said, "It's like the university doesn't want to be good at basketball." You are correct. It doesn't matter how much confidence Moos has in Miles behind the scenes. This has been handled terribly out in public.

  44. For anyone that missed it, there was an article in the Journal Star yesterday where they interviewed Hank Bounds. http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/sipple/steven-m-sipple-bounds-might-rankle-some-but-his-lofty/article_471a8b4f-9085-5350-b25d-3a9000ed5ce4.html The basic premise was a quote by Bounds something like “you have to convince me why we shouldn’t compete for national championships in every sport”. Well Hank, after the debacle on the basketball front yesterday, I give you exhibit A for why we won’t be more competitive in basketball and despite your talk, we are clearly just a football school. Whether you’re a Miles supporter or not, the tepid actions by the administration show one thing; they don’t have the same commitment to basketball as football. IMO, the one year extension was a joke. It did nothing to help anyone other than possibly showing Miles just enough love that you hope he sticks around if you can’t find someone better next year. It clearly sends the message he’s on the hot seat, doesn’t help in recruiting players or hiring a new assistant coach. It provides a litany of possible excuses for next year and the following years. It also damages future recruiting classes and all but assures that we have some bad years coming up. They should have either extended him to have a total of 4 or 5 years on his deal or done nothing. Either would have done more for the program than what they did. The fact Bounds had an interview on the same day saying he expects championships is a joke. You don’t build championship programs this way. There is no way they would ever do this to the football program. Can you imagine a football coach had under 4 years on his deal here? I can’t. The actions of our AD on basketball make me realize what they think of basketball and as a die hard, long time fan, it makes he both angry and sad.

  45. Good companies don't evaluate CEO's based on the most recent quarter or even year. They take into account the entire time that CEO has been with the company (and perhaps even before that). The CEO reflects the company and its brand, so the company has to be very diligent with their review of the CEO. This can take time. If a CEO has struggled for a few years but then has a decent/good year, the company still has every right to be hesitant. The company may reward the CEO for a job well done with a small raise or extension, but very few companies would say, "Now he's getting it! Give him at least 5 more years!" because nothing has happened that proves that CEO can sustain success for multiple years in a row. The company is not sure they want to tie their brand to that CEO for the long term. And that's okay. The company said that as soon as the year was over, they would inform the public (its consumers) what they were going to do with their CEO. The company informed its consumers just 15 days after the end of the year that they've given their CEO a one-year extension for a job well done this past year. The "brand" of the company will most likely remain the same as it was the year before, except to the hardcore consumers who really like that CEO. But to the general public (especially nationally), they probably didn't even notice a thing. (The title of this thread made me laugh. The university has yet to embrace using "Nebrasketball" in marketing. I've always thought "Nebrasketball" was cool and catchy, but you can't even buy a "Nebrasketball" t-shirt in the shop at PBA. What a missed BRANDING opportunity!)

    Hank Bounds interview

I felt like it made a lot of sense for Kenya to take that job. Stability here was certainly a factor but I'd argue the most stable job anyone can find is with a new coach. Working with a Hurley and at UConn is a good gig. The area lines up with where Hunter's recruiting ties are. He's very good friends with assistant Kimani Young. The issue with this contract isn't Hunter leaving; assistants leave. The issue is finding Hunter's replacement.

  47. I think he would have taken the UConn job regardless of the extension. It just made sense for him. Trying to somehow twist Moos' slow play into costing us Kenya and Xavier is just turning frustration into bitterness for no reason.
