  1. If I'm Miles, and you're the AD, and you do what you say and I kick ass next year and win an NCAA tourney game, and you then approach me about a long term deal, I'm going to say, "Long term? Like what? Two years instead of one? So generous. Thanks, but I'm going to find a 7 year deal somewhere else and good luck with the coaching search to replace me." If I'm Moos this year, I come out PROMPTLY after the Final 4 with AT LEAST a 2 year deal if not 3. Maybe structure buyouts in such a way that I can cut ties a little more easily next year if things go south. But I bring Tim forward at a press conference and praise him effusively for the great season we had this year and how we got screwed out of an NCAA tourney appearance the team had clearly earned. What do we have instead? The good feelings that should have carried us forward into next year following one of the best regular season runs in program history have COMPLETELY dissipated. Gone away. Gone. No good will; no good feelings; no positive momentum carrying us forward into next year. None. Completely screwed the positive momentum that would have given us a foot in the door in recruiting. The way this has been handled has been a complete cluster fuck.

  2. 1) By what analysis do you come to that conclusion? Industry standard is a rollover, adding a year onto the end of the contract every year, keeping coaches with a set number of years on their contract. Always. For a coach to burn 2 years off the end of a contract, then produce a very strong record and only get a one-year extension, says the same thing to recruits as it does to everyone else: his time here is done after next season. If he does well enough not to get fired, it'll be good enough to attract other offers that he'll consider before choosing one. The chances that he's back after next year seem almost miniscule. No question in my mind this situation hamstrings us on the recruiting trail. Convince me I'm wrong. 2) OK. Maybe. Next year, we'll still have, hopefully, a team full of studs. But the year after that? Guess we'll see. I have my doubts. You think 14,500 fans would show up every night to watch our 2000-2001 team? 3) By what analysis do you come to that conclusion? We're spinning our wheels for a year. We're screwing recruiting in the right here and now. We lose, at a minimum, the seniors, plus probably Roby at the end of next season. Those are spots Miles would be recruiting to fill right now. Those potential recruits are guys who won't be signing with us in November because they have no idea where Miles will be when their college careers start or who the coach here would be. Fire Miles this year, and you get moving with a roster to work with. Extend Miles and you signal to everyone this is our man (unless you have to buy him out early, which, OK, fine, so what?). This one-year extension, IMO, is the absolute worst of all possible scenarios. With all the players we for sure lose off next year's team, we're going to go into 2019-2020 giving serious minutes to walk-ons like Ross Buckendahl and Craig Wortmann. For the record, I believe Miles earned a reasonable extension with this season. I respect that there might be those who would disagree with that opinion, in which case, fine, fire him now. But, for the love of all things Holy, make a decision one way or the other -- extend for real or fire him. But don't leave us in this state of suspended animation with a coach on life support and a program teetering in the balance.

  3. It just depends how big of a ditch you want the next coach to dig out of when the current coach leaves.

  4. Yep, the old "how dumb does he think we are?" I wouldn't even bother filling the assistant position. Unless Norm wants it for a year. I assume Jamel White's uncle has moved on to other things.

  6. First post here and this is a general post for all these Tim Miles extension threads. When did 22-11 overall and 13-5 in the conference become not good enough for Husker fans? Sure our schedule was a little on the easier side this year, and it would have been nice to see a better finish in the conference tournament and NIT. I get the impression from reading these boards that some people forget this was a historic season for the team. Yeah it's crazy that making the NIT and bowing out game 1 is historic but that's the sad state of affairs of Husker hoops. A one year extension is a massive setback to any progress that's been made in this program over Miles' tenure. Two postseason appearances and a program that is finally able to attract talent, regardless of whether through transfer or recruiting. It just feels as if all that has now been thrown out the door just to leave us in limbo for a year with a lame duck coach. I just feel this year was a crossroads year for his contract. Either he's your guy and you extend him AT LEAST 2 years to let him keep the ball rolling, or you decide he's not your guy and move on. This just feels like a situation where Bill Moos got this completely wrong and we're the ones to suffer.

  7. 1) won't effect recruiting as Miles is still under a 3 year contact with the possibility to extend it if can finally have back to back good seasons for a change 2) won't have any effect on attendance. I doubt people will not show up cause Miles only got a 1 year extension 3) didn't set the program back at all. If Miles is the right coach, he should be able to capitalize on our success this year. If not, then it's time to look for another coach. He has had enough time to prove it and so far, he hasn't.

  8. What a 1 year extension accomplishes: 1.Kills recruiting. 2. Kills attendance. 3. Sets the program back years. This is a kick in the pants to season ticket holders.

  9. Got a nice slap in the face extension today. Next season now a dead man walking situation. Not a good feeling.

  10. What a slap in the face. Does no good for Miles or the team. If you’re that unsure about Miles, it was time to cut the losses. My goodness. Moos is 1/2 on handling coaching situations now.

  13. I wasn't looking at the right part of Miles contract either. If we fire him it's $105k per month or $1.260 per year. As the guy is employable we're talking about pinching pennies to gamble on killing recruiting momentum.

  14. I know this is crazy talk but if they would have let me, I would have spent the rest of my life in college playing basketball. Everybody is always so shocked when a player or coach does something that doesn't seem to make business sense. To some people, it isn't about it being a business but that they love the college game and the experience that goes along with it. I know they are in the great minority but I think some of those people still exist.

  22. The attitude on this board has rapidly digressed in the past week. I would like to do something to lift everyone's spirits. Music always seems to do it, so does steak. Combine the two, and we're talking nirvana. Here's what's up: Post the music video you feel best describes Husker Men's Basketball. It's that simple. The winner will be determined by how many "like" votes he or she receives. "Down" arrows won't be counted. In case of a tie, I will make the final decision. Prize package is 2 Nebraska Star ribeyes. Or if you like a little less fat, 2 NY Strips. If the winner is out of state, I'll ship them to you. Good Luck and good eating!

  23. I've been out of town for a few days with 30 inches of snow on the ground, so bear with me. Miles STILL doesn't have an extension, are best recruit left and so did our best assistant? We've all seen a lot of chaos/turmoil here over the years, BUT REALLY? You just went 15-1 at home and finished 4th in the Conference. Most schools would have a Parade...

  24. One could argue that extending a .500 coach five years would be an even greater implication that Moos doesn't care about winning basketball games. At Nebraska, Miles is 4-13 in March road and neutral site games (3-13 in such games at Colorado State, so 7-26 as a D-I coach). He's 0-6 against Creighton (many of which have been blowouts). If you're happy with going to the NIT every other year, then I guess Miles is your guy. I just want more than that. And I think Moos does, too.
    2 points
  25. There is simply no chance this does not hurt recruiting a lot. Every coach we go up against will be using it without a doubt. This will also impact the type of assistant coach we can get. This is a very loud and clear no confidence vote by the AD, no other way to look at it. It sucks because it does kill momentum and is needless. give him 3 years, lower the buyout, and praise him to everyone for a great job last year. It should not have been that hard unless Miles took a hard stance in negotiations which I doubt since he does not have a lot of juice.

  26. Wow. I actually think Moos did the right thing here. I think he's buying more time to see if Miles can keep his roster together and actually string together two good seasons. To me, it's totally fair based Miles' EKG results. I don't think Moos is buying more time to find his own guy. I think he legitimately wants to see if Miles is that dude, and I hope he is. It would've been nice to have happened before Kenya jumped shipped though. That was a colossal screw up. I don't think a one year extension is a slap in the face to TM at all. It says, "Here's a .500 coach who may have actually figured it out, so we're going to cautiously support him." If TM has a similar season next year, I highly doubt Moos would have any problem restructuring that contract. I'm not sure how anyone could justify TM's body of work at Nebraska as being worthy of anything more than a cautious extension. He hasn't earned the huge one yet. This season got him off the hot seat. Next season could land him the big one. Absolute worst case scenario, our starting lineup is still: Watson Allen Thor Roby Jordy ^^ I think that's a more talented lineup than some might anticipate. Best case scenario: Watson Allen Palmer Copeland Roby ^^ That's an actual NCAA darkhorse contender. I say that with zero hesitation. Let's see how it shakes out. I have zero doubts about TM and his recruiting. He did a fantastic job coaching last season as well. Lightening needs to strike twice for him.

  27. I agree 100% with you except for one part. I think he did want to be here long term. My guess is that has now changed. To me after next year this is starting to look like a complete rebuild again and I am not will to concede that is entirely Miles fault. And after 2 years of basically a "prove it" contract his "want to be here" will be gone.

  29. Would did you expect Moos to do? I would have only offered a 1 or maybe 2 year extension at most as well. Miles hasn't proved he can get us any further than he has in 6 years so why give him an longer term contract? If he has another good year next year, then he could earn a longer contract but if not, then Moos can fire him and not pay out a lot of money. Seems pretty logical to me. You look worse if you give him a 4 year extension and then fire him the next year. I think Moos did the right thing in this situation.

  30. This is Moos buying a year to find his guy. There's certainly a downside to this approach. The uncertainty of Miles' contract and the improbability that he'd get a lengthy extension may have been a major factor in Kenya Hunter leaving for UConn. I haven't heard anything, but it seems logical that it would have been a factor. Hunter's departure created a domino effect that resulted in the loss of Xavier Johnson, which is a huge blow to this team. If this is a cost-benefit type of situation, then I'd say the costs are mounting if the contract situation led to Hunter leaving. Again, though, I can't say definitively that Hunter wouldn't have bolted for UConn even if Miles had gotten a big extension. I just hope the benefit is sufficient to give fans something to get excited about again, because the loss of Hunter and Johnson is enormous from a personnel standpoint.

  31. Agree he hasn't earned a 5 year deal, but 2 years at least gets in the door for telling kids I have four years, I will be your coach the entire time you're here. It's also in the realm of possibility that Miles has another solid year and then takes his talents to South Beach elsewhere. So either way Moos is probably finding a new coach in 2019.

  35. He most definitely has similar deficiencies in his game like Aguek did. He's not a college post player, he's got the athletic skill set of a wing. But because of him being one of the biggest kids in the state he's been parked in the post at ole CP. Needs to work on his jump shooting and perimeter game. He's a freak athlete.

  36. When Ed was first looking at schools he wanted to come to Nebraska but didn't feel that the interest was as high on our end. He didn't feel like we wanted him as much as he wanted to come play for us. Which I've been told is true, we had interest but he definitely wasn't a priority recruit compared to guys we were after back at that point like Tyreese Haliburton, Nate Roberts, and Xavier Johnson. It seemed the same could be said for how Creighton was going after him. Interested to see what the interest is considering that he hasn't played in almost a year. I wonder what kind of shape he is in. Sounds like Coach Lewis and some coaches from other schools will be watching him in a workout today from what I've seen on twitter. We'll just have to wait and see.

  38. The problem is that it doesn’t have to be a “support one over the other”. I can be a fan of Moos and still believe that he’s handled this poorly. Part of the job as an AD is to do what it takes to support your team, help them win games and achieve success. On the surface, I don’t know how anyone can say that what’s going on right now is doing those things.

  39. Anyone else catch Nick Bahe's conversation with Jake Muhleisen on this topic last week (and subsequent discussion after the interview, including with Kevin Kugler)? I think they were spot-on. Here's the audio from that segment -- honestly, it's worth a listen. Both guys are in the boat that this ongoing NCAA-or-bust mentality isn't healthy for the program, and Jake brought up a great point that it can really screw with how someone coaches when he's constantly in an ultimatum position, especially when it comes to teaching accountability and discipline. With that kind of pressure, the coach gets forced into playing his guys a certain way, where it could be better for the locker room and team in the long run to have the freedom to make tough decisions. In fact, he used a hypothetical with James Palmer, but I'd submit that we've seen it play out already -- recall 2014, with the Deverell Biggs situation. If you put that game in 2018 instead, does Miles feel like he's able to show Biggs the door? I don't think anyone would argue that it wound up being better for the team in the long run, but at the time, it was a gamble with the talent we had available, and it very well could have gone the other way, despite being pretty clearly the right thing to do. Does he have the standing and equity to be able to make the same kind of decision now? Under the current circumstances, I'd say no, and that's to Nebraska's detriment. If you want to cut ties and try another coach, do it. But if you're going to keep him, you have to go all in, because the waffling and ultimatum-style environment isn't good for anyone.

  40. Well..if he goes 24-11 and wins a tourney game next year....he's going to get a multi-year extension and the money. Even if he's done that, he's still not done enough to get an offer from a big boy and highly doubt he leaves this place for less money and the same tenured deal.

  41. How much is this going to hamper our ability to hire a good assistant coach?
    1 point
  42. Well, let's just hope that with a year to work on a replacement, Moos makes a killer hire.
    1 point
  43. Miles has never been an assistant coach in his life. He has been a head coach his entire adult life. He has been successful at building programs. He's not at the end of his career. He's employable. If we make the assumption that after a year he flames out and is fired it's very likely that he will be hired within a year for 3+ years. If you take that into consideration then extending him multiple years is not paying him 2+ million per year for x years; it's extending him for 2+ million minus what another school pays him. At the moment we're talking about handicapping Miles' ability to hire a good assistant and to recruit, which is critical. For a University that seems to pride itself on being clean in recruiting this is one way to invest in recruiting above board. If Miles isn't your guy, fine; why would you want to put the next guy at a starting disadvantage?

  44. Your point? Man we have a lot of people living in a dream world on here. Yeah, there are all kind of great coaches waiting in line to go someplace so they can be looking for a job again the next year
