    Deep run in the dance?

Norm, I used to worry about that jinx thing, too, but I've grown past that. My lucky Husker buttoned down short sleeve shirt and I are undefeated on game days. Sorry, everyone, it took the Penn State and Ohio State games to figure out what was wrong. I have a closetful of Husker gear, so I always wear something on game day. Always pulled a shirt from the closet and hoped for the best. Took me these last few games to remember we never lose with the buttoned down shirt. Worn it the last four. Be wearing it every game here on out. Buttoned down>jinx. Ass kicking times ahead, Husker fans!

  4. Exciting ending to the Purdue/OSU game. I will say this - the Haarms kid from Purdue is a major tool. It is very easy to despise him. When you are 7'3" and block a shot by a kid a foot shorter than you, is there really a need to do 50 fist pumps and repeatedly scream "get that weak s... out of here?" Perhaps the most hate-able player in college basketball.

  5. Throughout the Minnesota game I kept having déjà vu. My mind went back to countless moments (during the Collier and Sadler eras in particular) when our under-manned, out-talented team would try to scratch and claw its way to a victory over a vastly more talented opponent. I remember being exasperated in the bleachers at the Devaney, wondering how we were the only team that seemed to never be able to buy a call at home. I’ve seen that game in person no less than 50 times. But now I’ve finally seen it from the other side—through the lens of a fan of the talented road team. As the can’t-catch-a-break home team fan, that game feels like highway robbery. I’m sure the Gopher faithful left that game thinking the game was called unfairly (and at home no less!). Many of them likely uttered some variation of “Man, if only the calls went both ways, we totally would have won.” But as a fan of the athletic and talented road team, watching from the comfort of my couch, I finally have come to appreciate just how tough it is to officiate that game fairly. Because the reality is you can’t “call it both ways.” Why? Because the teams aren’t committing the same types of fouls. Our team was quicker. More explosive. Proactive. And when there was contact, it was usually because our guys had put themselves in position to make a play and they did. The result is that the refs didn’t blow their whistle on anticipation fouls. Or in other words, they assumed our guys were athletic enough to make a clean play on the ball, unless their eyes told them otherwise. A perfect example of this is when Copeland went straight up to misdirect the final shot of the game, the Gopher guard jumped into him and crashed hard to the ground, and the fans went bananas on the no-call. The Gopher players, on the other hand, were largely reactionary. They were a step behind. Not as quick. That makes it much easier for a ref to anticipate contact and know that the defender is going to be late, and the contact worthy of a foul. And generally speaking they were right. The Roby fastbreak foul (when Pitino got his technical) was a microcosm of how the entire game was officiated. On that play a Gopher defender clearly clipped Roby’s arm. It was a foul, no question. But as a Gopher fan all you see is a bang-bang play that got called against your team. The reality is that the Gopher defender was just a little too slow, and Roby just a little too quick, for the steal to be made cleanly. I finally get it. I now know why that game can’t be called evenly. As a ref you either call fouls on contact equally (which favors the slow home team), or you call fouls only on clear infractions (which favors the athletic road team). There is no way of officiating that game that “calls it both ways.” Sorry refs for all the mean things I’ve called you through the years. And thanks for getting the game right last night.

  8. As I harken back to my salad days, there was absolutely NOTHING better than strolling into the Devaney on a Saturday afternoon, sun streaming through the windows, to watch the Huskers battle in the rugged Big 8. Which brings us to this weekend. We have a special squad & I loved me some of that 2014 team, but this team is deeper and more versatile. We're in heady, heady times my friends and I'm certain that the best is yet to come...

  11. whoops is right.. ...Wisky has improved as the season has gone on, and recently has played OSU and Minn , to about 10 pt loses....and other B1G teams to closer games. They lost to Northwestern early, but beat them second time around. Their overall record isn't so great, but they're getting better. Like said earlier...get to think the disapponiting loss to Maryland and the difficulties we had.....we'll show up with something to prove. It's a good motivator sometimes.

  12. Isaiah's really grown up a lot this year. His two best games as a Husker have come in the last 3 games this season. He's peaking at the right time for us. Over the last 8 games, since the OT loss at PSU, he's averaged 58.7% from the floor and 36.4% from beyond the arc. In that time, he's also averaged 10.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 2.0 assists. When you have a guy scoring like James Palmer does, you don't need Isaiah to put up a ton of points. You need that guy who can fill the stat sheet with other helpful contributions, which is exactly what we're getting out of Zay right now. I kinda like this Roby kid. I think he'll be alright.

  14. As good as Roby was on offensive end, I thought his defense was the story. Really protects the rim and did a great job on Murphy. He had a few times where he could of committed a foul but instead just let murphy score. Was really glad to see this because we definitely needed him at the end of the game.!!

  19. I hear what you're saying but not sure I agree with your point that the game can't be called both ways. Let me give you a quick illustration. Last year, when Tai Webster was making a living driving to the rim, there were video replays of times where he drove to the lane and was getting absolutely mauled and no call. The help D would rake across his arms -- the kind of deal where last night we were called for a reach-in foul -- and they'd hammer him with a body while he's in mid-air, knocking him on his ass when he'd land. Foul? What foul? Do you see any blood? That might be ketchup for all we know. James Palmer has attempted 181 freethrows in 789 minutes of play this year. Last year, Tai only attempted 136 freethrows in 1075 minutes. Both players made their living attacking the rim and both had the ball in their hands most of the time. I'd say, this year, maybe the calls are finally evening out a bit. In years past, we were just getting screwed.

    Rutgers: Saturday

There will be multiple teams that we play in the next few weeks that I feel will kind of fold if we jump out hot. Illinois and Rutgers I think probably would with where their seasons are at. Maryland and Indiana could with where their seasons are at. I think PSU will put up a hell of a fight either way. They have as much a chance at dancing as us I would say. That right there could be a game that get's one of the teams in and the other would have work to do in New York. I think the PSU game could become bigger than No Sit Sunday in terms of what is on the line for both teams. Let's see how PSU does though. If they can string a few wins together.... ya never know.

  25. Actually, in my opinion, I can't find much fault with how Lunardi has this. We're only three slots below them so it's not like they are an 8 seed and we're in the first four out. They have 1 more top 50 win, 2 more top 51-100 wins and six fewer games against the Top 200 RPI crowd. I think it's perfectly defensible from a pure metrics standpoint. However, I have watched Syracuse a couple of times over the past few weeks and just using my biased "eye test", Nebraska is a more athletic and talented team and are clearly playing better currently. We just have to hope the committee watches enough games to have healthy debates on what the computers are telling them as it relates to one team versus another versus what their eyes tell them.

  26. would like to see nicea and maddie get stronger on the boards against wisconsin. i believe they only had 5 between them in the maryland game. that was rather disappointing. in conference play, wisconsin has been scoring an average of 55.7ppg while holding opponents to 67.3ppg. wisconsin has the lowest scoring average of any big ten team. if husker defense shows up once again, does wisconsin get out of the 40's??? if my figures are correct (11 games in Big Ten play) the husker defense has allowed one team, and that being Illinois, to score over their offensive average in conference play (+15). in 6 of the games, huskers held opponents into double digits below their average.

  30. I think the thing to remember here - and someone probably wrote this already several pages back - is that each bracket guy has his/her own criteria. Some base it on if the tourney started today. Some are projecting to what may happen at the end of the season. Some are going solely off projected RPI/KenPom/etc. Some try to figure in conference tournament results/some don't. Some are using their guts/eye tests. In most of these criteria, we aren't going to be successful with them. Our numbers now aren't good enough. And I believe most of our projections still have us at only 21 wins max, which isn't going to be good enough. The only brackets we're going to be in right now are those that use a bit of eye test/gut feeling, who actually look at our schedule & how well we've been playing and say, I think those guys can get to 22/23/24+ wins - so many wins that the committee can't ignore it. And who knows how many bracket projections use the eye test. So I'm not all that worried about how many brackets we're in right now. If we keep winning, they'll have to put is in eventually. (That doesn't mean I don't like reading about it, so please keep the updates coming, as I'm far too lazy to look at it myself.)

  31. I honestly have not watched our bench much during the games. But during the Minnesota game I caught glimpses of our bench in (let's call it) a celebratory mood. The bench is really into the games and put on a pretty good side performance. I am excited they are excited and I am really glad they are there to push those who are on the court.

  33. During the game I said I love how calm this team is. Down 0-7 to start, Tim calls time out. No screaming, finger pointing, bad body language. Just calmness of coaches and players. Same thing when Minn. ties it up, we don't panic, we do what we do get on a run and that is that. (Well with some help from a Jackwagon)

  36. People who aren't Nebraska fans are calling James Palmer the best 2-guard in the Big Ten. The guys filling in around him aren't exactly chopped liver. Neither are the top 2-3 guys coming in off the bench. Like some of us said before the season even started: deepest and most talented team we've seen in a couple of decades. We have the horses to compete like we've never had before, at least not in the lifetimes of anyone currently on the roster. We could legitimately win a couple of games in the tourney if we can get there. And I'm not talking about the asterisk play-in type game, either. What I see of this team is that they're as good as some of the Big Ten teams who've advanced to the Sweet 16 in years past.

  37. This RPI stuff is a lot of garbage in/garbage out kinda stuff. They didn't think much of us to begin the season. Not sure where RPI Forecast had us ranked, but probably well outside the top 100 teams. So, to them, our success looks like us just playing over our heads for most of the season as opposed to actually being that good. Or even being BETTER than that but just not playing up to our potential. The fact that we keep winning more than they've predicted, despite the fact that we've already been winning more than was predicted, tells me that most of these computers are set up to assume that we are the team they thought we were to begin with and that if we win a game we're not supposed to, it's more of a "we snuck a win" situation than "we're better than you thought" situation. I say that because their predictions have not yet caught up with how good this team is and I would be SHOCKED if we only win 3 more games after what we did in the last 5.

  41. It's also why I don't think the quadrant system survives this one and only season. this is a pretty big flaw. schedules are probably too determinant as it is; the quadrants have magnified what was already an acknowledged problem, especially in mis-weighted (uneven) conferences like ours, where you rotate the opponents you play twice.

  47. Reading this thread is always a nice way to pass a snowy morning after a win. This is one of the first times I can say that everyone who played contributed to the win and none of them had a "down" game. And I would also like to add kudos to the Big Ten Network. While I realize that they are paid to hype the league which signs their paychecks, Bardo and Crispin seem genuine in their appreciation for our team. Since humans still make the ultimate calls on the selection committee and it is impossible to watch every NCAA team play, I would guess that any committee member wishing to see at least a portion of a live NU game might turn to the B10 channel. Those positive comments have to carry a tiny bit of weight to the casual viewer.

  48. getting a little ahead of the game, but, maryland is going to be awful strong next season. while only losing confroy(sp) and should get blair watson back----according to hoopgurlz maryland has the #3, #32, and #33 recruits for next season. i think if you get a top 20 recruit, odds are pretty darn good you are getting an immediate impact player. maryland is getting taller as two of these recruits are 6'4" and 6'5". the #3 recruit is one of those gals. anyway, maryland will be the overwhelming favorite next season. (just to add-----they already have commitments from the #8 and #38 ranked players for the class of 2019.)
