  1. Hold on...I'm sorry guys, but the facilities, amazing as they are, are not a reason any recruit in his right mind commits to a program as historically blah as Nebraska. Quite honestly, having a nice facility is something more for the fans to pat themselves on the back over their contributions. It's removing a hurdle. But it isn't a reason anyone signs with a team. Go back and read the stories from when literally anyone on the team committed (I just did, because I wanted to make sure I was remembering correctly). What do they say is the reason they chose Nebraska? The first thing every one of them mentions is the relationships they formed. After that, some mention the fan base, some mention the level of competition, and Isaac Copeland noted that we had nice facilities but that was after talking at length about his relationship with Kenya Hunter and Anton Gill. Facilities help in the sense that it's one less thing to hurt you when competing for a nice player. They might have thought twice about it if the locker room was filled with dead bugs and they were practicing at Mabel Lee every day. But having a deluxe locker room (or a terrible locker room) will take a backseat to a good relationship with a coach 100% of the time. We have the players we have because they had great relationships with the coaches, not because they had a great relationship with the pool table felted to look like a basketball court. You don't have to like what the coaches do with those recruits after they become players, and there are probably some fair arguments to be had there, but it's inaccurate to say that we're getting recruits because of our facilities when the recruits themselves are consistently saying otherwise.

  2. In my nerd moment of the day (whatever, it's Friday afternoon), I got kinda curious about what things would be like if the tiers factored in the state of the team at the time the game was played, vs at the end of the season. Obviously that's an imperfect practice too, since early evaluations can be super arbitrary, and overall things usually tend to balance out -- i.e. we were really undervalued at the beginning of the season, as were teams like Boston College (and Ohio State), but teams like St. John's and, oddly, North Dakota and Long Beach State were valued better at the time of those games than they are now. But I was curious nonetheless. I used the TeamRankings site for RPI, on the date of the game itself. No idea if there are other places to find that information, but I Googled NCAA 2018 RPI and found that. The picture this paints is a touch different from our current resume -- not necessarily a night-and-day situation, but it does get rid of our Tier 1 goose egg. Interestingly, Minnesota would still only be a Tier 2 win, but Northwestern and Michigan are both Tier 1. Full listing is below, but the summary goes: Tier 1: 2-6 Tier 2: 3-2 Tier 3: 6-0 Tier 4: 6-0 I guess I'd argue that, if RPI is so important and they trust it enough to make it a major component of bracket-building, they should trust it enough to evaluate the quality of the team at the time the game is played. If that were the case, what I see is a team who played a balanced schedule across a variety of team difficulties, won the games they "should", and is competitive against decent competition with a few decent wins, but wouldn't necessarily be considered elite. What that translates to in terms of a bid to dance, I have no idea. But our resume maybe looks a little better this way. Date Team H/A/N W/L RPI Tier 11/11 Eastern Illinois H W 236 4 11/13 North Texas H W 328 4 11/16 St. Johns A L 65 1 11/19 North Dakota H W 85 3 11/23 UCF N L 52 2 11/24 Marist N W 300 4 11/26 Long Beach State N W 70 2 11/29 Boston College H W 98 3 12/3 Michigan State A L 7 1 12/5 Minnesota H W 43 2 12/9 Creighton A L 56 1 12/16 Kansas H L 21 1 12/20 UTSA H W 249 4 12/22 Delaware State H W 348 4 12/29 Stetson H W 279 4 1/2 Northwestern A W 75 1 1/6 Purdue A L 13 1 1/9 Wisconsin H W 126 3 1/12 Penn State A L 123 2 1/15 Illinois H W 145 3 1/18 Michigan H W 30 1 1/22 Ohio State A L 14 1 1/24 Rutgers A W 179 3 1/27 Iowa H W 145 3 1/29 Wisconsin A W 135 2

  4. Some of you guys who are still "on the fence" with Miles, or are certain we could easily hire someone else to do better, must be pretty young. I'm not. I ain't gonna live forever. I want to see this NCAA tournament winless drought end. I'd like to see it go down this year and, if we make the tournament, I think it will. I think we're good enough to win at least a first-round game. Our resume might prevent us from proving we could do it, but just get this team in the tournament and I think they'll show they're a match-up nightmare for the Dance. If you read my posts over time, which some people probably do and a lot probably don't, you'll note that I'm usually an optimist, but a guarded optimist, really. You haven't heard me pronounce every team over the last dozen or so years (since I found this site) to be the best team in a generation. I've basically said that for the first time, though, about this squad. And it clearly is. But a generation is a loooooooooong time. By the mid-90s walk-out time, I'd felt Danny Nee had run his course here. When he thought he was going to get the Rutgers job and announced that he basically never felt like he wanted to be here, he lost the fanbase. When they finally fired him, I was extremely hopeful. But, as some have pointed out recently, from about the very first game under Collier (or, really, even over the summer when we saw the recruits he was bringing in) it was like, oooh boy, what have we gotten ourselves into? Collier was here six years before he took another job. Wasn't fired; would have been here a 7th had Butler not offered him the AD position. Doc was here six years. Miles has now been here six years. And if you don't think Miles is the right guy or are on the fence about him, how many more coaches-times-six-years are you willing to wait to find that right guy? How confident are you that we just need to open up the check book to bring in that coach who will put this program on the proverbial map? How certain are you that it's just that simple? It's been 18 seasons since Danny Nee was fired. In that 18 years, we've been .500 or better in conference play just twice: once under Doc Sadler; and in Tim Miles' second season. We're about to go over .500 in conference play for just the third time in 18 years. Two of those three under Tim Miles. And people are on the fence. We're within striking distance of making the NCAA tournament field for just the second time in 20 years. Both would be under Tim Miles. And people are on the fence. If you motherfuckers can't live with a couple of down seasons every now and then while a guy tries to build a program, and demand we fire the coach every six years, I am going to be dead before we win an NCAA tourney game. And if that happens, I'm going to be really pissed. And I will haunt this board with error messages and banner ads for "Bluejay Pest Control" for all eternity. Got it?

  8. Worth noting: The two best recruiters in the last 40-50 years of Nebraska hoops (perhaps ever) were Danny Nee and Tim Miles. Nee leveraged Prop 48 and jucos to assemble competitive recruiting classes; Miles has leveraged the transfer market to do the same. I agree with the complaints about his iso offense, but good recruiting has allowed us to offset that criticism this year. Would people rather have Doc's or Barry's system offenses with their recruiting? Prolly not. So, let's see what Tim can get done with this group. And if he gets us into the tournament and wins a game or two while there, then you've clearly jumped the gun if you've ever called for his termination at any point before then, because he would have produced the single-most successful season in Nebraska basketball history. Frankly, I'd prefer if we could all just sit back and watch where this one takes us and enjoy the ride for awhile because right now we're winning. Bigly.

  9. Why dont you run some numbers to tell us how we should feel. This program was crap before he got here. He has greatly exceeded expectations 3 of his 6 year. To say he is all recruiting and no coaching is rediculous. The years we have been good it is because he teaches a hard nosed defensive style that keeps us in most games. Look around, very very very few teams have an offense like Creighton, they have other issues as you saw their defense last night give up open threes all night. In the 3 seasons we under performed, there were issues he could have handled better for sure and some were bad luck. Season 3, Walt checking out and high expectation levels just killed us. I do not think he did a great job of keeping them focused that year. Year 4 good recruiting class but playing a lot of Freshman is never ideal especially undersized 5s. Then last year I hold him accountable for the late season collapse but if the traitor did not leave I think we are at least a 500 team. So it is not black and white and to say he can not coach is wrong IMO as he has proved he can for a long time. He might not be coach K or Izzo but he is not some scrub off the street either. Also those who claim he can not recruit high school kids, I hope you know Watson, Allen, Roby, Nana, Ed M, Horne, and Xavier were all really highly rated high school players we out recruited good schools for. Nothing wrong with mixing high rated transfers in as well, he has been good at finding those which is nice. We should not be even having to defend him, he might get some votes in coach of the year and might win it if Ohio St was not playing great.

  13. How about some consistency. You completely discredit what recruits say got them to commit in this thread but totally 100% believe committee members say about conference records. Its ok to admit there is a middle ground. I imagine the facilities being top notch did play some part in the commitments but relationships were the main reason. Just like conference records might not be a deciding factor but can be discussed and considered because they are not actually outlawed from bracket discussions just because they are not included on a stat sheet.

  17. I think at this point, if the core of the roster is scheduled to come back, that a more likely event for c) would be: c) Moos: okay, two. And then a more likely event for d) would be: d) Miles: OK I might be all wet on this, but I think it would be more likely to play out that way. So far, Miles has been a guy who stays someplace for six years, sneaks into the tournament but doesn't win, then takes off. How much hotter of a prospect would he have been if he had stayed at CSU one more year and been the guy who had their only tournament win in 25 years? Would he do that again if he thought he was close next year? At some point you get tired of being Moses, the leader that never actually enters the promised land. If he becomes the first coach to win a tournament game at the last power five team to do so...that's one hell of a resume enhancer.

  21. Yeah, I mean, I think a coach can win here. My expectations are higher than where we've been. Miles hasn't gotten us there yet, but I think if you look at the big picture, I don't think it's clear that Miles has maxed out yet. And the trajectory we're on this year is very encouraging. I thought it was premature to say he should have been fired a year ago. If we had done that, we wouldn't be seeing the success we're seeing now; instead, we'd be at the beginning of another six year plan. I'm not willing to accept mediocrity, but I just don't think turning over coaches every six years is the way to make progress. You have to look at the coach's resume with a little more depth because a superficial "look at the skid we went on end of last season" and "3 losing seasons" doesn't really tell the whole story. Not in my opinion.

  22. One thing we all need to remember... and it just hit me... is that we need to enjoy this ride as well. I love the debates, love discussing this bubble team and that bubble team, and love to discuss where the Huskers will end up. But please take a minute to enjoy the ride as well. Its like getting to go to Florida and the last day there you get to go to Magic Kingdom. If you spend all of your time and energy just looking forward to that MK trip, you’ll miss the rest of the vacation. Now there’s a chance that MK is closed for some reason on that last day and you have to go to Universal Studios instead. So try to enjoy the whole vacation as well as looking forward to the best day.

  24. I am not the biggest fan of Miles offense, and have questioned the minutes he has given out throughout this year. I have never been a basher, but I called him out numerous times for things. The thought of his firing even crossed my mind, but I have never posted it. Here are some things I have complained about... 1. Not calling a time out at the end of the Kansas game 2. Starting Okeke over Roby for the Penn St. game when Jordy left the team 3. Not playing Palmer in OT 4. His overall handling of Roby, because I've always felt he is not used correctly. This is finally turning around thank GOD! Those are the big ones that I remember. His player management yesterday was a thing of beauty, and the switch to the 1-3-1 was perfect timing. I know they haven't officially made the post season yet (NIT or NCAA) but he is getting the most out of this team right now. For the record I am far less critical than multiple posters(cough cough huskerbaseball13 cough cough) on here, but I know when I am out of line. I am now owning up to it!

    Starting To Get Anxiety...

the committee doesn't turn in its eyeballs before retiring for deliberations. and the closer you are to the bubble, the closer those eyeballs look. I think we'll do well in a closer inspection if push comes to shove. The obsession with tier 1 (a concept which you should enjoy this season, because it'll be gone next) is understandable, but these are people who take pains t make sure they get it as right as they can. I think NU looks good right now on close inspection. Strong finishes also matter a great deal--they've always been on record as saying that is one of their biggest tie breakers (what's the mo?). All these things will add up IF we do what we can. I'm not worried about this team making the Dance provided they do their job and win the games they're supposed to. If they do that, they're going to go.

  46. The program was nowhere near rock bottom at that point. Rock bottom is when your primary recruiting assistant abandons your program and jets off to a safe landing spot and the head coach (who stunningly managed not to get fired at the end of the season ONLY because the AD was fresh out of political clout and your head coach managed to win a couple games in the conference tournament) can't find anyone willing to come take his place and eventually settles for the uncle of one of your current players who coaches an AAU program somewhere outside your primary geographic recruiting zone and, meanwhile, your star sophomore center has thrown his name in the hat for early entry in the NBA draft and has flown home to Australia and isn't sure he's ever coming back and your star freshman point guard has asked for his scholarship release. That is rock bottom. What happened at the end of last season is that a couple of guys who had been starters in the past looked at the roster for this year and realized they probably wouldn't be starting anymore for the rest of their careers because they see you have a couple of studs sitting out as transfers who will join them in the junior class and relegate them to the roles of bench warmers going forward. That is not rock bottom. Just for the sake of clarification. I have seen what rock bottom looks like and end of last year wasn't it.
