  1. A win is a win is a win is a win is a win is a win. I don’t care how attractive it was, just need to win and they did. In a lot of ways, this game felt a lot like some of those grinders we’d try and put teams through when they’d come in the Devaney Center. We’d try and muck it up and make it as ugly as possible. That’s what Rutgers did today. Good win. Got another one to get on Saturday vs. Iowa. First Half: Watson hitting early. That’s a great sign. He also found a couple wide open teammates early on. Roby missed a 3 and Jordy couldn’t handle the heat. That drive by Palmer to get NU to 8 was a work of art. He’s becoming impossible guard. Watson missed a couple at the end of the half. Things got a little muddy in the middle of the half. I probably should have expected that. Nice little flurry to end the half. I like how Copeland finished the half. Would be nice to get one other guy going beyond JPJ and Cope. I don’t have the numbers right in front of me, but it feels like they rebounded mostly well. Second Half: The booth at Rutgers is weird. I make the rebound comment then they get a 3 off an offensive rebound to open the half. I like Roby lobs. I like Copeland slams, too. We’ve got a block party to open the half. I liked the energy coming out of the break, but wish we didn’t have to wait until halftime to find it. Seems more of an issue on the road. NW, PSU, OSU, tonight all come to mind. There are a few examples of it happening at PBA, too. We’ll see how big that point on Geo Baker’s circus shot at the end of the shot clock turns out to be. Those back-to-back 3’s by Palmer and Cope to stretch the lead to 7 were kinda fun. Really pushed the tempo in the second half, Rutgers struggling to keep up with it. Roby is a really good passer. Thought his third was a pretty clean block. That lineup with Jordy, Allen and Evan on the floor was a little terrifying… We had some pretty awful entry passes this half. I think the ref got caught up in the moment on the offensive foul call on Palmer. Big boy rebound by Roby after picking up his 4th. Palmer didn’t play very well the back half of the 2nd half. 11 2nd half turnovers. Uck. The five that NU was able to force Rutgers into, however, were all pretty timely, it seemed. That was a monster offensive rebound by Copeland. It reminded me of that one time Kyle Marks picked up a big offensive rebound in a win at Missouri. I forget what year that was. I hated that shot by Palmer there, though. That hesitation by Watson to get to the rim to push the lead to 4 was pretty. How did they not get that rebound after Sà missed that free throw? We had 3 guys there? And then a huge offensive foul drawn by Watson. He’s been really solid today. Got destroyed on the boards in the 2nd half. Good win. I’ll take it.

  2. Roby hit all three front ends on one and ones today. That was clutch and resulted in 5 very important points.

  3. Dang Rachel Blackburn freaking impressed me tonight.... She makes me happy when she plays. No matter how bad her knees hurt she is still diving... this hits home as I am only 29 and have had 4 knee surgeries and in the process of training for a half marsthon..

  7. Just got done watching the game on DVR. Didn’t know the outcome as usual so pretty gut wrenching W! Wish we could shoot the 3 better on the road. At least early in games. Our great defensive play has kept us in the last two games. Observations: 1. Yes, the team has forgiven Jordy but if he is going to play weak defense and turnover the ball and half his shots are basically turnovers he shouldn’t play. Zebras don’t change their stripes. Miles needs to quit playing him like he wants to keep him here. Tanner or Duby could have been much better tonight. Jordy needs to earn minutes. His play in the first half earned none so he shouldn’t have been put in the game half two. 2. When we got up 7 Palmer made some horrific decisions. Lots of guys made some bad decisions. The game got fast when we no longer needed it to be. Yes, those are daggers if they go in, but from what we’ve shown on the road that was not what we needed at the time. 3. The officiating I felt was consistent. If you’ve never officiated you should try it. There is a shortage. Awful call on Palmer charge but I saw many worse on Monday and usually they even out. Glad these guys got the obvious charge down the stretch right that the guys on Monday missed. 4. All of our road games are going to be like pulling teeth. It’s hard to watch, it makes you drink, you want to turn the channel but as of right now this is who we are. We make silly decisions at times and can’t hit shots and play pretty damn hard. Fill up your glass, root them on , and be ready to yell at the TV because these are important minutes. I’d rather go through the agony of ugly wins/ close losses than have the indifferent feeling much of the past 15 years has been filled with. 5. I really thought we would be switching a lot of ball screens because that’s what we’ve done the last couple of games and the Rutgers lineup would have allowed us to do so. We didn’t which cost us a few, but the defensive game plan seemed to be on point as we didn’t rotate back to the screener until the ball handler picked up his dribble. Seemed to throw their timing off quite a bit and we ended up with dead dribbles late into possessions. Good job defensive game planner. Being unpredictable and versatile can be huge.

  10. Last I checked, Illinois is up 5 on Indiana with about 9 min to play. If that score holds, we'll end the night in sole possession of 5th place in the league. And then Indiana has a very tough finishing schedule for their last 9 games. They'll be lucky to win 5 of them. They still have Purdue, Michigan State, us, and Ohio State x 2 in their last 9 games. Northwestern has Michigan twice and Michigan State plus on the road at Wisconsin and Maryland. Maryland has Michigan State, Purdue, and Michigan, plus road games at PBA and Northwestern (Northwestern and Maryland play twice in their final 9). Penn State still has to run through the gauntlet of @ Ohio State, @ Michigan State, @ Purdue, and hosting Ohio State and Michigan before finishing up @ PBA. And Wisconsin still has to face Michigan State, @ Maryland, and then hosting Michigan, Purdue, and Michigan State. Those are the teams around us. I'd say our chances of finishing alone in 5th place (or better) are pretty good.

  13. The people off the bench were awesome. They just did a heck of a job. ..ALL of them had super plays, and showed confidence and hustle. We shot 90 % free throws !!!!!!!!

  14. Purdue was short players and it showed...they didn't look comfortable. So much for their win streak. And we pretty much played lights out on both ends of the floor the whole game. Our size seemed to show. And our chemistry is a killer !!

  20. Is the man, the myth, the legend. We all know that. But does anyone else see Cookie Belcher every time he gets the ball? Their games are different - I'm not comparing games. But how they look? Exact same build. Exact same skin tone. Similar handles. Am I the only one who sees Cookie Belcher every single night when I see James Palmer? By the way, Cookie is my favorite Husker basketball player of all time.

  22. How about we take the double bye and just win the stinking tournament!!!!!
    3 points
  23. We're in that weird territory where that double bye is either good or bad for us. Getting an extra win without that bye isn't the worst thing, but the double bye also prevents us from potentially getting a loss from a bad team. Not sure how I feel either way at this point.

  25. The Watson Drive Previously Rutgers' small ball lineup had completely collapsed on a Palmer drive to the middle of the floor. Nebraska pulled it back out and everyone has cleared out of the paint. Copeland has set up to try and slow down Corey Sanders. At this point Sanders is trying to get around Copeland and Watson with the ball is building a head of steam. The Setup: At this point Sanders has caught up to Watson. Deshawn Freeman has drifted down off of Copeland to follow the action. Roby is covered in the corner while the other two defenders are covering Palmer and Gill with their feet in the paint. The Performance: Watson pivots and switches the ball to his right hand. Sanders shifts on a dime and prepares to cover a passing/shooting Watson The Prestige: No idea how predetermined this move was but Watson had gone back with his right hand not out of being stopped but in a hesitation move. At this moment he's going full speed towards the basket whereas Sanders hasn't yet changed direction. Their rim protector on the court, Candido Sa, is sucked out because Roby is a threat from out there. Freeman is moving out to cover Copeland. Freshman Geo Baker is the last line of defense and he's already committing to stopping the pass to Gill. Watson finishes an uncontested layup against one of the better defenses in the conference to seal the game.

  27. 0 in my opinion (if you mean NBA). Palmer has the best chance, I actually enjoy him 10x more than Petteway (take away a 9 game stretch and TP is just a selfish jack on losing Basketball teams... don’t @ me, as the kids say). Copeland could do it, ya know never know, he might fit a mold someone wants... guy is 6’9”, athletic, Long, a leader, and can shoot. I’m very worried with the hype you guys have laid upon Roby. He’s only a superstar right now in most of your heads. He’s got a long way to go before he’s consistently a go-to guy who can be relied upon in all areas, night in night out. As of right now, he’s got just as much of a shot of being an nba guy as he does being a “man he just never reached his full potential!” Sorry if any of my post comes across as negative. I had a late night and wanted some good food, nothing was open, and I had to settle for Burger King. And I hate Burger King.

  30. Think about this: Rutgers misses a dunk in the first half - ends up getting a 3-pt play on the possession Rutgers misses a dunk in the second half - ends up throwing in a long 2 at the shot clock buzzer on the possession We get a huge break when officials overturn a call at the last media time out to allow us to maintain possession - then we proceed to throw the ball away on the in-bounds pass and give up a layup That's 7 utterly fluky pts by Rutgers where it looked like we had received 3 big breaks. In past years we lose that game 100 times out of 100 with fluky breaks like that going against us, especially 7 pts worth. Our defensive play right now is unreal, especially the complete reversal we've had in our 3-pt defense vs last season. And it's only gotten better in league play. Nothing is coming easy against us. Keep playing that kind of D down the stretch, and we will be very happy with how this season ends.

  35. That is a hard team to play against for us. They just fling the ball in the area of the hoop at all kinds of different levels of bricks. Their strength match our weakness. We needed to play well on offense against a good defense to win this and for the most part we did. We easily could lose this one. Glad it is over.

  46. Believe it or not, we are exactly one month away from wrapping up this regular season. It's been a journey of highs and lows, but fortunately more highs this year. The fact that it's almost February and we're still in the hunt makes this season one to be excited about. We still have a lot of work to do, but take some time to step back and enjoy it because the regular season is quickly coming to a close. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

  48. The most convenient fast food near my office is a Burger King, so whenever I forget my lunch on the kitchen countertop it usually means I'll be "enjoying" BK. Ugh. I've found the place to be almost tolerable if you order a Rodeo Cheeseburger or two (hidden menu item -- burger topped with BBQ sauce and onion rings) and get onion rings instead of fries. IMO their french fries are the worst on the market by a huge margin. They taste like chemicals. I don't know how people can go there and order a regular cheeseburger and fries and not just want to throw their lunch in the trash.
