Probably not a popular opinion, but I liked how we used our big guys last night. We need those guys going forward, even if they are struggling offensively. I felt like Pardon really wore down as we had 3 big guys to throw at him, and then you make him chase Roby late in the half, and he has no gas left. We saw exactly that last night. Pardon was horrible down the stretch. In the final 8 minutes, he had 0 reb, was 1-2 on FG (the only make was a meaningless layup with 0:12 left), was 2-4 from the FT line, and let Copeland dunk in his face. NU went from a 1-pt lead to a 15-pt win in that stretch, as he was no factor. I think the way we used our bigs to wear him down led to that. --- I'd certainly like to see our bigs give us more on the offensive end, but we really only need a little bit more out of them going forward. We can generate points without those guys being a big part of the offense. We more need those guys to eat minutes, rebound, and play solidly, wearing down the other team's 5 and opening the door for us to use Roby at the the 5 for 5-6 minutes of each half. I thought they did that for the most part last night. It'd be nice to have Roby getting closer to 25 minutes, but the last thing we need is him picking up 2 fouls before the first media timeout against the other team's 5 when he's fresh, forcing Roby to the bench. Make their big guy bang against our big guys for a while, then let him chase Roby when he's tired.14 points

It's hilarious that Northwestern fans have the temerity to call ANY basketball program "horrible" or "bad". Because for pretty much the entire history of college basketball their team defined it. Oh well, I'll just revel in kicking their ass on their home court.8 points -
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Messing with the starting lineup after a victory is bad mojo. After a bad loss, it sometimes may be a wakeup call. At this time of the year, injuries and illnesses, poor effort in practice, and the exigencies of each game should be the main reasons for significant changes in minute allocation.7 points

Tanner's one positive on offense over Duby and Jordy is that he actually sets the high screen, waits for his teammate to use it, and then goes hard to the basket. He's not an offensive threat on his own, but just doing that helps create space by forcing a defender to account for him. I can't stand watching a screener arrive late and leave early. No purpose in running the set if you're not going to do it right. Duby's limited offensively, but he could provide some easy points if he'd execute this better. He's faster than Tanner and more explosive to the rim. Somebody had to provide an old man rant of the day, happy to oblige.6 points -

I really thought Northwestern got tired last night with their lack of depth. their defensive intensity was just not the same at end of game as it was at the beginning. We wore them down and then attacked!! That was good to see. So nice to have quality depth!!5 points -

The conference is down but let's not get carried away...it's still a respected conference. We don't need 13 conference wins to get in. 10-8 with a tourney win would do it. Especially if Minnesota stays strong and NW rights the ship a bit.4 points

It is at a place like Nebraska and frankly, it is for most schools that aren't blue bloods. Everybody talks about getting to the dance. That's the goal and dream for 99% of all college basketball teams and players. An NIT run doesn't add much. Any NCAA visit is more preferable than any of the other options on the table. Especially at a place like Nebraska.3 points -

Like every year, about ten or twelve teams will be compared and contrasted. We need to take care of our home court and win two more road games and we should be in like flint. But what the heck, keep winning and make this discussion moot.3 points -

I think you're right on this. Earlier in the season, like heading into the CU game, I posted a thread that I was ready to see Roby start. I thought he would be a good match up against CU, which lacked a big post presence but had bigs who could hit from outside. Since that time, though, Isaiah has shown a propensity to get into foul trouble. And I totally agree you want him on the floor at the end of the game, not fouling out with 5 minutes to play. Purdue is huge. They go about 8 1/2 deep. They have about 40 minutes worth of guys who are 7'2" or taller. Haas gives them right at 21.5 min/game and then KU transfer Matt Haarms (7'3", 250#) gives them the other 18.5 min/game at the 5. So, they're huge the whole game long. Our bigs are not going to be in there to give us offense; the trio of Jordy, Duby, and Tanner will be there to push and shove Haas and Haarms as much as possible so that, with 5 minutes to play, they don't have the legs to chase down a Roby and a Copeland. I'm totally good with that. And what Jimmy said. Now isn't the time to screw around with the lineup.3 points -

I agree Roby needs to play more 25+ minutes a game for sure. However if he has to guard a big guy all game he will either have foul problem or be worn down at the end. Still play TB /Jordy at the 5 and then go small when needed or down the stretch. As bad a Jordy has been he still gives you more than Duby unfortunately. I would start Tanner and bring Jordy in off the bench maybe get him some confidence back.3 points -

I understand we caught Northwestern at a good time (but they also have had a couple really ugly losses this year with their full complement of players). But I do not believe we stole anything last night. We were in an alley fight, and we won the fight. We earned a win...we did not steal it. Also, there likely is not a lot of coaches out there that will rest easy when preparing to play us. Our reputation (as evidenced by some of the Northwestern fan opinions) lulls the opposing fan bases to sleep a bit. But I do not believe for a second that Purdue will take us lightly. They will be prepared, and if we go in and win, we will provide a lot of people the shock and awe that we need to dish out. Heck, last night, we had three or four plays that had the potential to make national sports news, in and of themselves. So we may go and lay an egg against Purdue, but then again, the potential is there to rock their house, especially since their students - I believe - are still out. We shall see. And just to compare and contrast what is said when we lose versus the takes from Northwestern fans from last night; revisit the comments made after we lost to St. John's...just saying.3 points -

Miles probably does understand it but he has to worry about player development too. If we lose a game this year because of it and jordy takes things seriously and next year... Well... you get where I am going considering we return pretty much everyone. If we solidify that post, next year this team is looking awful good at this point.3 points

Over the past 4 games, Jordy stats are averaging: 5pts 7rbs 53% from the field .5 blocks 15min Duby: .75pts 2rbs 1blk 6.5min Tanner's last 4 games with minutes: 3pts 3.75rb 1blk 67% from the field 10min ------- Jordy is a better rebounder than both Duby and Tanner. Duby is a better post defender and rim protector than Jordy or Tanner, and a more electrifying finisher. Tanner is a better system player than Jordy or Duby--better defensive positioning and excellent screen setter. He also doesn't turn the ball over. I think, individually, we have some bright-eyed, hard working, inexperienced players at the traditional 5. Combined, they can be a decent center when they rotate and ride the hot hand. Jordy is working hard. He's an underclassmen. He needs minutes, and we need his size. He has a clunky game right now, but statistically, he's not hurting us beyond turnovers (which is something to note down the road). I too have grown to love Roby at the situational 5, and I think Miles has figured out a great way of doing it--making sure he closes the halves. Roby is an absolute nightmare to see check into the game in the final 5-7 minutes with a full tank, and that's what our traditional bigs are going to be able to provide for our team. I really, really, like the rotation right now and how Roby is being utilized. ----- Other thoughts: We have a lot of tough, hard-working kids who like each other. You can see it. There's no quit in Palmer at all--even in blowouts. He gets better at the end of games. That's heart. Our defensive intensity was outstanding the entire game. There were some wonky, unlucky plays, but fate has a way of rewarding those who play the right way, and it was pretty evident that we were the whole time. The second half looked like the first half deserved to look. This game, again, shows how far TM has taken this program from a talent standpoint. There might be questionable production here and there, but there are no true weaknesses on this roster for the first time in decades. ---- At some point, I said to the television, "Roby... just score, dude. Literally no one in college basketball can block your shot in the lane."2 points -

Best part about this year though is we realistically control our own destiny. We technically do every year, but this year if you look at what is in front of us...it's not unrealistic pie in the sky hopes for winning games. We're legitimately the more talented team in probably no less than 11 of our final 15.2 points -

I said this in another thread, but it came up again so I'll say it again. Roby still gets in foul trouble fairly regularly. Until he can overcome his case of foulitis, making him a starter doesn't actually give him more minutes; it just shifts the minutes he does play earlier in the game. If we're going to make any change to the starters, it seems that finding a way to get Gill into the starting lineup should be the priority. Gill has proven to be a great offensive player for us this year and he already was an above average defender. The only problem with that is that it would mess up Miles' entire early-game rotation, since I don't think he'd want to bring in Duby/Roby/Evan at the first media timeout. None of those three guys have a scorers mentality at this point in their careers, so it may not be an aggressive enough lineup at the 16:00 mark.2 points -
They do have a tougher SOS. Also, they were ranked higher than us to start the season and we're still the same team that needed Tanner to step up to beat Stetson at home2 points
