  1. No more offseason banter. No more offseason coach/roster talk. No more offseason tic-tac-toe matches ending so uneventfully. No more excuses. I can't wait to hit rock bottom with you all. Welcome... to Nebrasketball season!

  3. Nebraska Cornhuskers (0-0) vs Eastern Illinois Panthers (0-0) Date: Saturday, Nov. 11Time: 7:30 p.m. Arena: Pinnacle Bank Arena TV Broadcast: No (Internet broadcast via BTN+, a $$ service) Eastern Illinois Info Head Coach: Jay Spoonhour Location: Charleston, Illinois Conference: Ohio Valley Nickname: Panthers Mascots: Billy the Panther Last time out: Lost to South Indiana 95-92 (exh) Typical Rotation Depth: Probably 8-10 Line: Nebraska by 10.5 - O/U 142 4 Factors: N/A Tempo: Middle of the pack Style: 3pt Heavy Shirt not to wear: Blue, Grey, Hang in There cat shirt Fun Fact: Coach Jay Spoonhour is the son of Charlie Spoonhour who was an assistant under Moe Iba for 3 years at Nebraska. Fun Fact: Eastern Illinois is fueled by Jucos. 8 of their 14 players are former Juco players including 4 of the 5 probable starters. Miles Presser Evan Taylor Presser Player to watch: Montell Goodwin The 6'2" senior is the Panther's leading returning scorer, averaging 14.2 a game from last year. He's a 39.1% 3pt shooter comfortable scoring inside the arc as well. Look for Evan Taylor to guard him initially and we'll see how well our senior does guarding the main offensive threat of a team The Skinny: This E. Illinois team is certainly punchy but by beating Illinois has the Husker's full attention as if the opening game wasn't enough. Thus, we'll initially focus on the Huskers here. This is the deepest squad in the Miles era...Nana Akenten probably won't get on the court unless we have injuries and he potentially starts day 1 for Miles' first team. Not only is the team deep but the depth lines up for most every starter to have a backup in the same position. The current depth chart looks something like this: PG: Watson - Allen - Thorir SG: Taylor - Gill - Nana SF: Palmer - McVeigh PF: Copeland - Roby C: Jordy - Okeke - Borchardt Let's talk about the new guys: Coming into this season you had to wonder who would be our main scoring threats in addition to Watson and who might get to the FT line. James Palmer seems to be the answer to that question as he's been blowing up during the exhibition season. Miles has referenced Petteway when talking about they dynamic way Palmer has scored but it seems like JP can do this without need to dominate the ball. How will he respond when people start to get game tape on him? Copeland has struggled a bit with his shot but you can see with his inside-outside shot the staff envisions using him a lot like Walt Pitchford as a stretch four, giving the offense room to drive to the basket. At points the Huskers will need some big games from the former 5 star recruit. Can he deliver? Can he handle guarding some of the PFs in the B1G? Duby Okeke is going to make teams alter their shots in the paint due to his crazy ups and remarkable wing span. He's been in an offense that really pushed the ball so it's been nice to see that he has some post moves when we've worked the ball into him. Can he stay on the court? Duby has been a human foul most of his career and will continue to hack guys. Can he be disciplined enough to reduce those fouls 50%? Thomas Allen is a gifted scorer who will see minutes right away and take some of the load off of Watson. Like any other freshman it's a matter of how much can he contribute defensively in order to earn more time on the court. Eastern Illinois has pushed the pace in the pre-season and I'd expect this veteran squad to continue that trend vs the Huskers. Miles has talked about pushing the pace as well and I think you'll see that at the very least in the first two games. Thus, expect this one to be a lot of fun and a higher scoring affair. Also expect Miles to be grinding his teeth after the game about the lack of defense. Prediction: Nebraska 85 - E. Illinois 74 View full article

  5. KenPom has Indiana at #65 and Indiana State at #204. Also, in a related Ken Pomeroy note, after 13 games of 163 played today Nebraska has moved up one spot to #97! Huzzah!!

    Nana to Redshirt?

To his credit, I think, he's never really done this. He's played the guys who he has felt give him the best opportunity to win that night or season. With the roster he has now, I don't see that changing. Hopefully Nana rises to the challenge.

    Nebraska Football 2017-2018

All the natural and obvious consequence of a horrible hire by a pathetically overmatched AD. How this can be a surprise to anyone amazes me.

  16. Coach Amy has said cutting down turn overs, and improving defense is one of the many important goals for this team , and on going to future teams. Last year we didn't have a strong interior defender. Jess was focused about getting points and not fouling out apparently. Now we have more experienced and capable guards. That in itself should improve the turnover battle. And we were a new team & coaches starting from scratch, and lots of freshmen..... with lots to learn. I just don't put to much value in what happened last year, other than we improved. Rachel wasn't able to play last year, but will this year, and now there's a 6-5 newbie in Cain, that already shows she can shore up the middle. All that plus a strong emphasis on defense from Coach will change things defensively. Defense is a mind set that is usually taught. If you don't play hard defense and you will have trouble being competitive. The future indicates the recruits have some good size, and can rebound. And look to be in the B1G mold. The pieces are coming together team wise. Another year or two we will be vastly different...and competitive in the B1G.

  20. I know what you (they) meant. I just don't buy into the notion. Last year has no relevance on this year other than in prognosticators perceptions of how good any team is.

  23. Mine's probably not as thorough or in-depth as yours. Illinois -- they just fired the guy many here wanted us to hire last time we hired a new coach. Miles be like Keith Richards looking around at all the "hot" coaches who've been fired and he still has a job. "Haha, MFers. I'm still here." Anyway, Illinois. There's a reason they sucked last year. Probably not all coaching. Probably same reason they'll continue to suck this year. Indiana -- hated Crean. Hated that they fired Crean. I want someone at Indiana to hate. Maybe it'll be the new guy. Anyway, they have the cool, candy-striper warmups. They might not be too bad this year. Iowa -- what is wrong with their coach? I give 'em 3-2 odds he strokes out sometime in the next 5 years. I remember this line from the movie "Teachers" where the principal is yelling at a male teacher who got a female student knocked up: "When we said to be a 'team player' we didn't mean to go out and make your own team!" That's kinda what McCaffrey has done. His best recruiting strategy appears to be continuing to get his wife pregnant. Maryland -- their mascot is a turtle. Michigan -- Crean's brother-in-law is turning them into a basketball school. Hate Crean. Can't stand his brother-in-law. But Beilein can coach and he has players who can play. Michigan St -- They have this guy named Izzo. He's not bad. I guess he's OK. They'll probably do alright this year. Minnesota -- I still can't believe their turnaround from 2 years ago to last year. I think it was smoke and mirrors. I think the real Minnesota showed up for their 1st round NCAA tourney loss to Middle Tennessee Southwest Immaculate Conception State College. Granted, Middle Tennessee was 30-4 going into it, but still. There's a long history of the offspring of big name coaches getting jobs based on who their dad is and crashing and burning. Waiting ... Northwestern -- NWU. NOT NU. We're NU. They are MFing NWU. And that's all I'm going to say about them until they accept the fact that we're NU, not them. Ohio State -- We have to sweep those douchebags this year. That's all there is to it. Penn State -- Little known fact: Their head coach is the bastard child of R. Lee Ermey, who, like Dean Smith and our very own @jimmykc, was born in Emporia, KS. That gives him some basketball chops by the associative property of multiplication. It's still Penn State. Purdue -- I mean, what can you say about Purdue? Rutgers -- New coach. Not that new. Same old roster. Their recruits aren't as good as they think they are. PG ain't bad. The juco kid we passed on is decent. Top 13 conference finish is not out of the cards for them. Wisconsin -- Their coach is Greg Gard. His middle initial is G. His parents clearly lacked imagination and he is NO Bo Ryan.
