    Go on record now.

I will also add to what you've said here, all of which I agree with, that it appears we have enough depth that IF one has a "poor performance" there is enough depth to over come it. Last year if Webster and or Watson had a bad game, and it happened, we were screwed.

  3. I would like to chime in on the phrase "poor performance." If someone has a bad offensive outing, they are said to have a poor performance. But I would like to contest that thought process. Total performance has to reflect upon total game. That includes some measurables, and some intangibles. In the exhibition outing, we had two players with poor offensive performance. One of those individuals also had a number of turnovers that does not bode well for overall performance. But that same player disrupted shots, played good on and off ball defense and rebounded well. The other player did a number of little things that helped the team to a successful outcome. We are going to have players throughout the year that will have a bad offensive performance. But in those instances, we need others to pick up that offensive slack AND those players performing poorly on offense must pick up and/or maintain the other elements of their game.

  5. It's a typo from the scorekeeper. Laws didn't play.

  6. Jordy: 11 points, 6 boards, 1 block, 1 assist in 16 minutes. Project that out to 24 minutes per game, and that's 16.5 points, 9 boards, 1.5 blocks, 1.5 assists. I'll take it.

  7. How about "Jim Palmer"? JP? Or a little Shakespeare? "Have not saints lips, and Holy Palmers too?" Kent Pavelka-tron this: "JP for 3 . . . GOT IT!!! HOLY PALMER." Or if he's closer to the hoop: "Holy Palmer for two!"

  9. Best guess is that NU was playing an exhibition road game that was thrown together at relatively the last minute and the scorekeeper wasn't in mid-season form.

  10. I think Miles was sending a message as well, that the freshmen need to work on some things before they are going to see the floor. We have more depth this year, so we can demand more from everyone. This is really the way it is suppose to be. If Allen and the others are the players we think they will be, they will respond.

  11. As to the freshmen: I think the coaches tried to treat this like a real game as much as possible. We have a legit opponent from a P5 conference, playing on the road, and they wanted it to be a realistic road game experience. That includes rotations. Seems like Mississippi State approached it the same way. Both teams wanted to play to win, not just play to get guys on the floor, etc. As to Copeland: Yeah, he shot poorly. Does anyone remember the first scrimmage that was open to the public after Terran became eligible? The year we made the dance? Remember how, in that first scrimmage, he couldn't buy a bucket? And we were all like, "Oh, shit, this could be a rough season if THAT is the guy we were hoping would score some points for us." Remember that? Let's get a larger sample size before we draw any conclusions about Copeland. One thing I will say is that if the perimeter shots aren't falling for him, I'd like to see him be able to do something else to get his scoring mojo going. If he's being defended by a guy who's not as quick or not as athletic or not as big, run some iso to give him a chance to create one-on-one and attack the basket on the dribble or at least draw fouls and get to the line. Yesterday, we were settling too much for perimeter jumpers instead of loving the rim at least a little bit. As to Palmer: The kid has a scoring mentality. Love having guys who just know how to get the biscuit in the basket. He's like Terran without the forcing-bad-shots thing. That'll make it a lot easier for everyone else to adjust to his style of play.

  12. Big jump for them. I saw that too. Also, we just proved we can win on the road against a top 60 team.

  13. Where is the traditional Husker basketball pessimism here? Did no one notice we are falling back into our old pattern of not getting the opening tip? Same old, same old. Time to put on your game faces, fans. Now let's get back to some football speculation about the next coach.

  14. Watched bits and pieces of the whole game. My takes are below. First half we looked tough. We played good D, got good shots, and made them. Assists were pretty high. Second half we came back to reality a little bit. Was still getting open shots, but they didn’t fall. Finally decided to get aggressive and got a few buckets. We should not have scoring droughts of over 4 minutes this year. Did we today? If we did, it shouldn’t happen. James Palmer is the real deal. He shot well, drove well, and finished well. Issac Copeland struggled, only scored like 4 points, and we still won by 4 scoring 70+ points. That’s a very good sign. I don’t expect the Copeland struggles to continue. What I liked was that he did the little things to help us win including rebounds and assists. Glynn and Jack and Jordy were what I expected. They have all progressed. Duby will help more than people think. Tanner will get a few minutes too! The freshman were freshman. No Nana per coaches decision. Gill was a nice surprise and might play more than some think. Him and Evan will be glue glue glue this year. Roby had a rough day. See Issac Copeland. Mississippi State is better than most think. Tried to get some rapid fan reactions on Twitter, but 9/10 people are so into football that I don’t think they knew there was a basketball game today. I’m going to say it right now that MSU will finish mid pack or higher in SEC. I also wish that is something we can put on a resume because I have a feeling that’s a decent road win come next March. Speaking of decent teams, these Huskers aren’t too shabby folks. I know I’m preaching to the choir, but this will be a fun team to watch. After today, I certainly think we have the pieces necessary to challenge in every game and play meaningful postseason games. I’m trying not to get too high from an exhibition... but this wasn’t no ordinary exhibition. This was a Power 5 Team, on the road, win. We dominated the first half. Great day, and gave me even more excitement for the season.

  15. I hope that all year we provide shocks to those that believe we are last years team. One step at a time and we will be pretty darn happy with the end result.

  20. I think part of that is that most people assume no one had their best game in the first exhibition action of the season. Also, you know some of the not-so-good stuff is stuff they'll learn from, like nearly blowing a 23 point lead. They'll learn from that. So, I think it's safe to assume some of the not-so-good stuff will, in fact, get better. And some of the good stuff is guys showing some of what they're capable of. Like James Palmer having a scoring mentality. Now we know a little about what the talk was about. Also, using my Tanner Borchardt comments as an example, I'm not just going by the box score when I say he'll contribute. Miles made comments in the post-game. The fact that he played in a game where Thomas Allen got 5 minutes and two freshmen didn't see the floor at all says something. He knows what he's supposed to be doing out there and he does the unglamorous stuff without making many mistakes. What I saw of him on the floor just confirmed what I'd been hearing, which leads me to say he'll contribute this year.

  21. Laws definitely showed up in the screenshot of the BoxScore I took at the half (shows 12 players in the Husker rotation with Laws credited for one minute). He does not show up in the BoxScore (from the same site) posted at the end of the game, however, so I don't know what happened. Btw I like the BoxScore/Live Game Stats posted on the Miss State site. For one thing it changes during the game to reflect which players (for both teams) are currently on the floor.

  22. I doubt we redshirt anyone. My remark was a comment on people extrapolating opinions based on gut feelings. As a fan of the social sciences, conventional wisdom can be true but many times turns out to be not so wise. Why do people ask a question just to answer it themselves? I don't know.

  23. Interestingly, James Palmer played only the last 35 seconds of the last five minutes of the game. According to the Play-by-Play info, James Palmer subbed out at the 05:05 mark, with the score 59-69, and he didn’t sub back in until the 00:34 mark, with the score 68-73.

  25. That nickname has to go. Scoring 17 on only 6 shots is the anti-TP. His stat line was much more likely to have those numbers reversed. He was a volume shooter. If Palmer can get near that number on near that attempts through out the season, he’s on one of the all Big10 teams. Would love to see it but not betting on it yet.

  40. In case you haven't seen it, the B1G Network has 1-hour specials going for each sports year they've been on the air this fall, as this is the network's 10th anniversary. The 2013-14 show has been on this week, and it has almost 2 minutes of highlights from No Sit Sunday plus the NU women's b-ball tournament championship. It's on a couple more times on Sunday. Also I see the Nebraska Basketball Show is appearing on my DVR feed next week - not sure if that's accurate, as it seems a bit early to start that show, but just a heads-up in case it is accurate.

Absolutely. This trade filled some needs. We gave up two starters and we got two starters, but the skillsets of the guys we got are better than the skillsets of the guys we gave up. And by giving up 4 roster spots in exchange for 3, we cleared up some space under the salary cap that allowed us to sign a couple of free agents in the off-season.* Great roster management by the coaching staff. * Given the current controversy and scandal involving shoe companies, I want to emphasize this is an allegory, a metaphor; it's not meant literally.

  42. @Swan88 I think most of it stemmed from his visible lack of emotion. He didn't display a lot of it, and people interpreted that as passivity. Or at least that's my theory. Also, he seemed to be allergic to dunking the ball. Lots of folks didn't like that about him either.

I would strongly discourage speculation. Rumors can be very hurtful. I may have more on this later.
