While it would be nice to have all 13 scholarships filled, I don't think the addition of two more freshman, two more transfer question marks, or two more question marks at all would have helped us win any more games in the 1/3 of the season Copeland would be out. Firstly, if there was a transfer out there that was another Copeland/Jordy/Watson and they wanted to play here, then I guarantee you that he would be a Husker. I thought the staff did a damn fine job of filling some much needed filled holes this off season. Secondly, I see some mentioning chemistry and I totally agree. With such a brand new team, chemistry might be a challenge. Something to think about though is "is filling 2 more spots with question mark players going to hurt or help in the long run?" As I mentioned in the last paragraph, if there was a no question would help us immediately player out there, he'd be here. But to now go the first 1/3 of a season splitting the minutes up even more amongst the new question mark players and then taking that many more minutes away would hurt chemistry more I think. Thirdly, I 100 percent agree that's we are a better team with Copeland. However, I also believe that we have the ability to win all of our games prior to him becoming eligible. It isn't just my Rose Colored Glasses this year either. We have depth (All 11 scholarship guys I feel are actual players that could help). We have better shooting (The addition of Allen and Palmer, Glynn and Jack getting better, and possibly Roby breaking out). We have two true posts. We should have better D (Less doubling down, two big inside presences, good guard play). All of that is without Copeland. Sure the addition of him only adds to that, but not having him doesn't automatically create an L either. Fourthly, the loss of Ed and MJ hurt. No doubt about that. The addition of Copeland took a little of that sting away. Then we added Okeke and Allen as well. We want to talk about chemistry, well do we think having those two automatically increases our chemistry? I don't honestly. Production is one thing and I think they would have helped there no doubt. However is a decreased Ed/MJ role going to help chemistry? Is someone who was very critical about AW leaving only to walk himself someone who would have helped chemistry? You traded that for a "last chance U" grad transfer who wants to prove himself, a struggling performing 5* who now gets a shot in the best basketball conference in the nation, and a top 150 Freahman guard. My point is that while in production MJ and ED would have helped, there could have been chemistry issues even with vets on the team. Sometimes new is the way to go. See Petteway, Pitchford year 1. Also, I'm not so sure the production of ED and MJ can't be offset by the production of Okeke, Copeland and Allen this year. Honestly would probably take the last group. Even if I only get 1 for 2/3 of a season.

How are we supposed to write about something if there's nothing to report? You'd seriously feel better reading every week that there's no change? When something happens, it will get written about. Until then, nothing has changed, and I really don't see the value of writing "nothing has changed" over and over again.

...which goes back to another post that you, among others, have made about the importance of getting Copeland playing as soon as possible. The momentum we can get from him can propel us into a better position later on in the season. Just remember how many threads we had on "with Morrow playing" versus "without Morrow playing" stats. One player isn't make or break, but it does change the identity of a team (for better or worse).

The basketball program would have to invite the media to practice like the football one does for that to happen. Football has media availability three times a week during fall camp with one of them being open. Last year, basketball had one practice open to the media that I was invited to at the beginning of the season and that was it. Everything else was pre- or post-practice availability, and they don't seem to be doing even that right now. I apparently did not receive the same invitation to practice that Lee did. What we write about stems from what we're given access to and what news breaks. There's been no basketball news and we haven't been give access to the players or coaches.

You can keep poo-pooing this but Copeland's good enough to where you might win 1-3 more of those 10 games. Is that the difference between staying home and postseason or NIT and NCAA? Is that the difference between Miles being extended or fired?

I realize everyone has a lot of hope that Copeland will be available from the beginning of the season and can hopefully be a huge part of what i think will be a very good team. I do as well. I also have a lot of hope that Roby will be a very different and much improved player this year and I think that if that happens he will be a very strong piece of this years team also. I am looking forward to seeing what Glynn, Jordy, Gill and Palmer can do this year too but I was wondering what everyone thinks about Nana Akenten? I think he could surprise some folks as well. What do all of you think about him?

The appeal is for a waiver that would allow him to play immediately. As far as I know, there is no precedent for this. There have been plenty of waivers granted for players that transfer at the end of the second semester to play immediately - family medical issues, coaching changes, old team is on probation - but I don't think there's been one for a midseason transfer. The rule is, a player that transfers at semester is not eligible until the end of the first semester the next season. Normally the player also loses a year of eligibility, i.e., if he transfers as a freshman, then the next year he's a sophomore. The exception to this is if the player is already redshirting or has played and has been granted a medical redshirt. In this case, he is still not eligible until the start of the second semester, but does not lose the year of eligibility. Copeland has already been granted the medical redshirt, as he only played in seven of Georgetown's games, and the threshold of games you can play in and still get a redshirt is 30%. So he will be a junior in eligibility. .

Also, it's not like Copeland will be just showing up and playing. He'll have been in the program for a whole year, been practicing with the team, going through summer workouts, fall camp and all that. That should (hopefully) reduce some of those chemistry concerns, or at least help get through them more quickly than they would have if he would have just show up like Adam Banks did with the Mighty Ducks in the middle of the season. Though Banks was a pretty significant factor in them making their playoffs run.

Probably the silver lining for 2nd semester Copeland eligibility is that Kansas won't have any recent gametape on him which could work to our advantage. After that we will have a couple of cream puff games to work out the kinks.

Granted @nustudent Copeland is a great player. I agree with basically everything you say about him. I indeed believe he could be a difference maker. If we don't have him, though, then we simply don't have him. The coaches didn't screw up in not getting him eligible like someone apparently did with Roburt Sallie and with Jorge Brian Diaz. Copeland's outcome was basically fixed when he decided to transfer after playing a few games last season. If the rules say we don't get him until 12/16/17, then that's what it is. Acting like our season depends upon it is overstating things IMO. We'd undoubtedly be better off if he was eligible all season long, but we'd also be better off if Tai Webster had an extra year of eligibility. But he doesn't. So why worry about it? Why count some games in the mythical win column if he'd somehow been able to gain a 5th year and then compare that with the number of additional losses we might have without him and declare the season nearly a hopeless cause already? I'm kind of with 49r on this. If he's ruled eligible, then hallelujah. If not, then let's buckle down and make the best of things. I'm not prepared to throw in the towel on the season just because Copeland might not be eligible until game 10. Yes, it would be better if we had Copeland all season long. But, you go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you wish you had.

The fact of the matter is this...the view on Copeland falls into one singular category. We have more potential with him than we do without him. He's at worst the second most accomplished player on the roster based on performance to date. Is it possible to be successful without him? Sure it is. Technically anything is possible. But do our odd for success go up exponentially with him as opposed to without him. Absolutely. Don't buy the two sided coin view on him. We (message board posters) don't get to hype him as our first 5* and talk about how great he is and then turn around and say out the other side of their mouth that it's no big deal if he misses 10 games. Certainly seems like we have a number of posters here talking Copeland up about how good he is (and I agree, he has a very high ceiling) but then dismissing his absence when he might not be eligible. Generally when a team loses one of its top players, it experiences a setback. Which is it. Copeland is either good and his loss hurts or if his loss doesn't hurt, it probably means he's not that special. Always amazes me how things get played on both sides here.

    Countdown to College Basketball

We were so much better than our final record last year. The team that went into Indiana and Maryland and won those games on the road was not the same team that lost at home to Michigan by 36. They just got demoralized and stopped functioning as a cohesive unit. If they can just avoid some of those demoralizing kinds of losses -- the letdown game against Gardner-Webb and that horrific home loss to Ohio State -- I think this team will seem like a totally different ball club at the end of next season than the one that finished this past season.

    The Isaac Copeland watch

Great points everyone! I see a couple different things in this whole ordeal. 1. I would much rather hear the he is recovering fine, already doing some full workouts, and is getting back into the swing of things VS. He can play right away, but the back is still an issue. 2. I think it is much more vital that he is here for the last 2/3 than the first 1/3. Would I love to have him for both? Of course! But if I had to choose between the two, I could take the last 2/3. 3. I honestly do not think the team is going to struggle as much as some think without Copeland. Yes we lost Ed and Mike J, but we have Jordy and a nice little backup with Okeke who we know both will play right away. I think having Copeland out at the beginning of the year will force someone to step up (Jack, Nana, Roby, Ect.) and that could lead to great things when Copeland actually comes back. 4. I am not saying that not having him to start the season will not hurt. I just think that we are a decent team who can win a few and have a few surprises even without Copeland. With him... well that would just be golden.
