  1. and teams and players. Too much bad. More doesn't always mean good, too many bad teams, too many bad players to many bad games. If the league was cut in half and the top teams played in one league and the other half played in the second level. And then the bottom 3 or 4 teams were dropped down and the top 3 or 4 were moved up you would get better games during the season. Much like they do in soccer. Relegation is great for motivation for teams and fans. Fan based are crushed and teams are really held accounable when relegated. I just think all American Pro Sports are too water downed with too many bad teams, bad players, bad coaches and bad organizations.

  2. See, I'm kinda chill about this. We got Jordy and Duby on the inside, right? Back court, you got Watson and Gill and Evan Taylor and that Thomas Allen kid. On the wing, you got James Palmer and Nana. And then, your stretch 4s are Roby and McVeigh. We got this.

  4. Is it sad that I took 20 minutes of my life to watch this. My breakdown of the match. Roman strategy to begin with was poor. Why not spread out a little more!?!? It was all individual play and that played right into the hands of the Americans. From the beginning, the Romans had an "uphill battle"... LITERALLY! But it was almost impossible for them to take this with the strategy that they pulled. Playing me me me war games isn't going to win you very many battles. They should have worked much better as a team. Something to learn for next time I guess. The Americans however never faltered. They came out throwing punches and never let up. Even when the line was breaking, they never faltered or let up. They "stuck to their guns" and played their match. Very good performance here by the Americans. I am sure it would have been much more close had the Romans worked together in this one and not went so one on one. Big props to the Americans for defending the home field. They came out ready to play. The Romans... not so much.

  5. In some other roster news... Someone who is helping with off season work outs told me that Shultis and Elradi won't be on the team next year. He said the walk ons will be Borchardt, Costello, and possibly a returning Johnny Trueblood.

    Jacobson Gone?

Wasn't that going to be his fate here with less odds on making the tournament and without a free year to work on his shot? If the team flames out this year he's spending his senior year with whomever we would hire for a new coach.

  7. Michael is the kind of player who could be a star player on a RPI 150 or lower ball club. He'd be a good role player for an NIT level team. He'd only start for an NCAA tourney team that had better players at every other spot on the floor, including a couple of studs. And that team probably doesn't advance. He's a bench player for any team that would hope to slip into the round of 32. So, if he wants to make some NCAA Tournaments, he wants to do it with some of the best seats in the house.

  11. Let's be a little real, here. Over the course of the season, in 24 min/game, Jacobson put up 6 and 6, whereas, in just 12 min/game, Jordy put up 5 and 4. As a true freshman. And his numbers got better as the season went along so those season-long numbers might favor Jacobson a bit. In fact, they do paint a slightly more favorable (less unfavorable?) image of Jacobson's productivity than if you just look at the last roughly third of the season when Jordy started to really catch on. Beginning with the Purdue game, Jordy really started to show signs of big improvement. He started getting more minutes and started being more productive with the minutes he got. There's a clear dividing line between the first 60% of the season and the numbers Jordy put from Purdue on. If we look only at the numbers from Purdue onward, just the last 11 games of the year, here's how things look: MJ averaged 21.4 min/game, 5.5 pts and 4.9 rebounds. JT averaged in that same span 16.9 min/game, 7.3 pts and 5.9 rebounds. Converting those stats to 40 minutes, MJ is putting up 10.28 pts and 9.16 bds per 40 minutes. In 40 minutes, Jordy was putting up 17.28 pts and 13.96 bds. Whether MJ or Ed was a better compliment to Jordy is up for debate. Neither starts at the 5 this year and both might have been bypassed at the 4 by Copeland had they stayed. Good chance neither Ed nor Michael would have been in our starting lineup this coming season. I think that, more than anything else, probably explains why they're no longer here. Wish both of them the best coming off the bench at ISU and Marquette.

  12. Defensive is way more physical now? You never watched any basketball in the 80's did you. It is so exactly the opposite. Flagrant fouls today wouldn't garner a second look or even be considered hard fouls in the 80's. And on ball is the biggest difference. You were allowed to put a hand on the offensive players' hip and just hold him there. Let's allow Gary Payton or Michael Ray Richardson put their hands on the slight Curry and see how it greatly affects his game. The rules have been changed to allow for more offense. This is not an opinion, the league has openly stated over the years that has been their intention. I can disagree with someone's opinion and that doesn't mean I'm right but this isn't an opinion. You are just factually wrong about when defenses were allowed to be much more physical.

  15. Scoring has increased because long range shooting is way better. Shooting is way better because the lane became more clogged after zone, etc., was installed. To give you an idea, Larry Bird was two percentage points better from three than Lebron. The idea that someone got decked to the floor every time they went up for a layup in the 80s is ridiculous. Were there more cheap shots? Yes. There is way better help defense now because of the rules, so there are way more kick outs. Also, there wasn't an emphasis on jumping straight up and allowing contact back then, so you might as well foul the hell out of someone since you're going to get called for it anyway when he jumps into your chest. There are way more no-calls around the rim today when two players collide, and rightfully so.

  16. Its always fun to speculate on how anyone from the past would rank on any sort of "all-time" list but ,in the end, as relevant as ,say, ranking the best armies of all time. I'm betting even the most destitute of today's third world dictatorships with a few tanks, a couple of planes, and a few dozen bombs could mop up Napoleon's legions in no time.

  17. This is the one thing that makes the agruement of who is best all time both fun and so upsetting. How would some of today's guys liked being thrown to the ground as they went up for a lay up every time? How would some of the older guys handled being able to get the extra step and not being pushed on all the time? The biggest one I think the difference is in strength and nutrition. Think about it Jesse Owens was the fastest man in the world, he ran on a cinder track, dug holes for starting blocks and wasn't allowed to eat in more than half of the in restaurants in the country that he lived in. I know that Bolt only ate chicken nuggets in Russia or where ever but he still has had reaaly good food up to that point I would think. Think about injuries. Old timers who careers where done with injuries that now can be fixed and you can come back better and stronger. I think a lot of people don't really think about some of these things when they look into say who was the best ever in any sport, I try to at least throw that in when I get into these agruements.

IMO....with Copeland there is a ton of upside and ceiling to the team. Losing him, even for just the non-con kills that. Especially considering the lack of depth in the front court without him. We'd be pulling guys from the wing to try to play the stretch 4 full time. It'd require more from a guy like Taylor, who we really should be seeing less of if we are really improving. Taking Copeland out of the equation would require a pretty remarkable development from someone to compensate, one, that I'm not sure is very realistic to expect. We can't keep losing contributors and just shrug it off. I agree that Jacobson probably lost his starting spot. That doesn't mean there still wasn't 18-24 mpg for him

  22. I've watched 80s games. I see slow players who weighed an average of 15-20lbs less than today's players. I see no help defense because it wasn't allowed. Players back then wouldn't even be capable of knocking over a Lebron James because he would weigh 40-50lbs more than anyone else on the court. Weight matters a lot in terms of physicality, and so does allowing zone and help defense in the lane. Were players dirtier back then? Sure. More physical? No. The game was slower all the way into the late 90s when iso ball was at its all time high. Jordan would not have the 1on1 advantage he had then in today's game. I do think he'd get similar numbers though because the pace has increased so much. When I say "physical" I'm also referring to the athleticism of help defense. You are way more likely to get a shot blocked going to the rim in today's game, which is one of the reasons the three point shot has become so crucial. Also, regarding hand-checking, there were plenty of dominant offensive players who played through both eras and had virtually no change in their game stats. As for Payton checking the "slight" Curry, you're making my point for me: Curry outweighs Payton by 10lbs and weighs the same as MRR. The fact that he looks "slight" to you says a whole lot about the physical prowess of today's players. Hell, Steve Nash was the same size as Payton.

  23. The rules have clearly changed, I seldom watch the NBA, okay rarely at best, because of it. I did watch a bit of the playoff games. I grow tired of watching players catch a pass at the top of the key and move both feet to get set then take another before dribbling. Guys like Robertson, Cousey and others would have been far more athletic had they been able to travel EVERY time they touch the ball. Please understand I think Lebron is a great player, just not willing to say greatest (yes in top 10 and or 5) based on what he is allowed to do that those before him could not.

Yeah, I know. It was kind of sour grapes on my part. I'm still a bit bitter about how he left. Especially the part about him having lunch with the Xavier coach at a local joint a short walk from PBA. I mean, right there in the very place where his loyal followers cheered him on. Imagine how his mom would have felt if his dad had screwed some bimbo in the marital bed. I mean, every time his mom eats at Lazlo's now, she's going to think about how her man nailed that skank ho there and she'll just never be able to sleep comfortably there again without thinking about daddy doing the nasty with some cheap tramp there. In her bed! Er, Lazlo's. Or whatever. You get my point. I mean, it just pisses me off.

Jacobson is better than people give him credit for and we'll miss him more than people lead on right now. We have little PF depth right now and that's with a healthy eligible Copeland. And that's not a given. Jacobson would've still played 20+ mpg this year

  43. Meyers will be back next year - he doesn't have what the MLB is looking for in the early rounds. When Meyers is drafted he will be drafted after a couple hundred guys that are worse ball players because he doesn't throw mid ninties or hit double digit bombs. MLB teams tend to not draft guys that are gritty damn good ball players in the early rounds - they want flash and measurables.
