Didn't they have a big hit song in the late 90's?

  4. Be careful projecting incoming freshmen to be difference makers. We all expected Roby to be that and he didn't quite get there. I know he had the injuries that slowed him down in the summer. I'd just caution against putting too much on Allen and Nana. Hopefully they light the world on fire. That would be fun.

I tell you, his highlights video make him look like we're getting Shaquile O'Neal. I needed to see some full length Winthrop games to see what he looks like on offense and defense in the coarse of a full game. Didn't take too long, because you just skip to when he's in. Here's my take: On defense, first and foremost he is a shot blocker/shot alter-er. He wants that block, he'll challenge almost everything. He has good blocking instincts, and there were multiple times when he didn't get the block but still made the guy to miss. Still, it can get him in trouble, i.e., you can get him off his feet with a good shot fake. He hedges well, and moves his feet well on defense. Blocks out pretty well, though there were a few times he got beat on the boards. As part of the Winthrop offense, he simply just was not featured at all, hence the 2 pts / game. He was a starter, but in the offense they ran, it was a guard oriented, motion offense, with them taking lots of threes. Keon Johnson being the main threat. Okeke's role in the offense was to set up along the baseline, then come out and set a screen up top, then roll back down low on the opposite block, taking his defender with him and opening a lane for the driver. The only time the guards looked to him was when they penetrated off the dribble and dished it to him when his man left him to commit to the drive. He hardly ever sealed his man up and posted down low, and even when he did the guards never passed it in. In tight games down the stretch like Illinois (Winthrop to Illinois was like Gardner-Webb to us) Okeke was on the bench, or, they subbed him in for defense. It will be interesting to see how he fits in our offense. But in short, how I see Duby Okeke is that he is the player I hoped Moses Abraham would be but never was, which is a quicker athletic big who rebounded, blocked or altered shots, and occasionally got some points off misses. Guy can seriously dunk if you give him the chance. I'd love to see our guards throw up some passes for the ally-oop with him. He can go get it. And maybe, maybe, in the short time he is here he can develop a few more offensive moves, or, better free throw mechanics, cuz...damn.

  6. Updated with the recent commit. Now, I'd look for another Andrew White/Anton Gill kind of transfer player, probably shooting guard, who would sit a year and join Roby and Tshimanga as juniors in a year, and then a freshman big like Isaiah Chandler. That'd get us to 13 and that's how I'd fill out this roster.

  7. Ik Ik I'm still a newcomer to this nebrasketball and all lol But I guess I'm more of an optimist And it's a lot of pieces to try and put together but I think this kinda new "core group" has been together for awhile I know not all playing together but has been together as a team If that makes any sense. I'm pretty sure they all are on the same page already. The guys that are coming in the "transfers" Im preferring to call them trades kinda? Think I saw that on here or somewhere? But anyway the trades know why they are here and are happy and willing to do it The more I think about it anyway I'd be crazy not too pick them to go that far Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk

Norm would do a good job. However, I think someone who has a proven track record with 5th grade girls might be the way to go.

  10. I think this is a really smart get. This kid is a freak athlete and does nothing but make spark plays (eye opening dunks and blocks). There are going to be games where he makes one or two of those and it starts a run for us. Talk about a spark plug, and a GREAT look in practice against Jordy.

  11. Jacob's a good dude. I may be in the minority on this board, but I enjoy the content he puts out and admire the work he puts in. That dude is everywhere. Not a bad article by any means. He's right. What kind of team are we gonna be next year? Will that be the kind of team we are designed to be for years to come?

  14. Agree w/ Ttoy4. Palmer and Copeland haven't just been hibernating this past year. They've at the very least been attending practices and film sessions, and, in the case of Palmer, actually practicing. Look what happened with Andrew White when he came off his redshirt year. Didn't take him a semester to get going. (Some of you might say, yeah, but Anton Gill ..., and my response is I'm not convinced Anton was ever 100% healthy this last season; he did NOT look like the guy I saw rip the nets in an open scrimmage the fall after he left Louisville.) Also, let's be fair to our offense a little bit with the "does Miles have the pieces finally" stuff. The offense needs to have certain pieces in order to click, but this team scored 71 against #14 UCLA and 72 at #3 KU. They also went into Assembly Hall and scored 87. What you have to have is a couple of guys who can get to the rim (Webster and Watson) and a couple of guys who can bury it from deep (White and McVeigh) and then a big man who can clean up the offensive glass and get putbacks or receive a dish from one of the guys getting to the rim (Morrow or Jacobson.). I think if last year's team had had White, it would have changed the entire complexion of our offense, our season, people's long-range view of the program, etc. etc. This coming season, we'll have a couple of guys who can drive (Watson, Roby, Allen) and a couple of guys who can bomb away from deep (Watson, Palmer, McVeigh, Copeland, Akenten, Allen) as well as, now, a couple of guys who are capable of cleaning the glass and hanging out for the dish (Jordy, Duby.) We would have had the pieces last year. I think we'll have even more pieces this year.

  15. Love the optimism from everyone, but dimes shares my views on this. We've got a lot of players who haven't played a minute under Miles' system, haven't played together (in college), and don't have much collegiate experience in a power five conference. It's going to take a lot of good luck, talent, and healthy and determined players to get it done. That can definitely happen. We've seen it in the last five years, but if the recent past is any indication of future success, it's going to be a big uphill battle. Just think back to the last five years where we've had young talent come onto our roster, have high hopes to be a big factor on the court, and then disappoint (although some have gotten progressively better over time). That said, I might start browsing for shoes in preparation for the dance.

Let me just beat my drum about assists numbers: Assists are a style statistic. It's an indication of how you score the basketball, not how well you score the basketball. Here are, for instance, Duke's offensive efficiency numbers vs their assist percentage. They consistently have one of the best offensives in Div 1 despite their relative lack of passing. Side note about assists: it's a subjective stat dictated by the home team. I agree that Padilla knows his basketball but his combination of youth and Creighton-ness led him to write the following Once again, assists are a style. It's a style that Creighton runs and they win. It's not Nebraska's style, they don't win. It's that simple, right? It's that thinking that basically had him pen a article about Nebraska having no identity when it really does have an identity: We run a dribble drive motion offense that could use more players suited to run it. Here are the numbers: Miles has consistently been in the lower end of assist% his entire Div 1 career. Sometimes that offense works; sometimes it's terrible. I think his point about not being able to find a style because we aren't specifically trying to generate offense through passing the ball is a flawed point. I also think it's the selling point we used for landing combo guard Thomas Allen. There is more than one way to win at basketball.

  18. Idk I have to admit I've only been following nebrasketball for maybe 2 yrs now but it seems to me with whats here already and 2 open scholarships. I might be crazy but I'm expecting BIG leaps ahead for those that played minutes last yr and are still here. I hear Palmer is really hard to guard and can shoot so I could see him playing a lot I'm gonna go as far as to say that barring anything crazy happening that this team will make it too the sweet 16 at least next yr Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk

I vote that we have Norm work with him on his shot. That free throw percentage will go up considerably if he does that.

True, if you consider Copeland and Palmer newcomers. But technically...Copeland and Palmer were enrolled at the same time as those others and were all set to be on the same team next year, so one can easily make a case that they aren't technically replacements. Personally, I'd just assume have had Fuller and Horne left and only signed Allen. We needed Okeke for depth but wouldn't have chosen him over MJ or Morrow.

  26. Hey Hey now... that highlight video isn't bad. I see some hope in this guy. He was able to produce some nice post moves the few times he got the ball. I also think that he could help make up for what we are losing rebound wise with Ed. Overall, it is a highlight video, but the highlights aren't too terribly bad.

  29. Agau's Las Vegas Knicks lost to the 17U squad from OSA 71-64 this past weekend. OSA was lead by local products including Kearney High's Kannon Koster w/ 21 Platteview's Brady Heiman w/ 14 and Omaha Burke's Shereef Mitchell w/ 11. Couldn't find a stat line for Mr. Agau

  30. I think Brase will be a warm body...but McVeigh is already going to lose time because of Copeland, Roby's extra year of experience and Nana and Palmer. If you add Brase to the mix who can play some time at a stretch 4...that's even less opportunity for McVeigh.

  47. I feel that we would've been in on Chandler if 1. We weren't so forward heavy to begin with 2. He didn't play so soft for a center 3. Academics weren't an issue 4. The last player Miles went after from Omaha Central didn't end up like Deverell Biggs did. Interesting to see Harriman pounce on a Nebraska kid though. Can only wish him the best, but also hope he doesn't add to the in state stigma that continues to plague Coach Miles in the media.
