    NCAA Tournament

The best part... AWIII will be playing as many NCAA Tourney games as the Huskers this year.

  2. I want to thank you for this contest. I am a 78 year old living in Wichita, Kansas and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of this. I tried keeping up with the stats so I know how much work this was for you. I hope you continue to do this next year. I lived in Lincoln and taught school at Millard Lefler. I am a dyed in the wool Cornhusker.

  3. That'll be it for 2016-2017. It's been quite a rocky and stressful ride this season, but at least there's a little clarity already for next year. And hey, Husker4Life took a last minute lead over Ken Pomeroy! That's gotta be worth something! Thank you everyone for making HHCC go smoothly this year. It takes a lot of coordination to manage and your patience was greatly appreciated! (That's gotta be worth at least 153 bonus points for me, right? ) Until next year, friends. Don't be strangers. Stop by HHC from time-to-time during the offseason! This week included: Game #31 neut. 6. In class A if you look at probably the best individual performance you had to be impressed with Kanon Koster who had a monster game for Kearney in their first round victory over Omaha Central. A good shooter who can play inside or outside and is one of those sneaky athletic types. He is also only a Junior.

  7. Syracuse finished with a final NCAA rpi of #84. We came in at #108. I wonder ... if we could have drafted one player off of Syracuse's roster -- let's say their leading scorer -- and had him play for us instead ... where we would have ended up and where they would have ended up. I bet they would have finished worse than #108. And I bet we would have finished better than #84. Probably a lot better.

  8. The official* Husker Hoops Central Bracket Challenge is back! For those interested, click on the link below and set up your bracket before the tournament begins! https://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/t1/group/105999/invitation?key=429f7ed9c729122b&soc_trk=lnk * Disclaimer: The use of the word "official" was never discussed and the express written consent was not provided by the owners of Husker Hoops Central. If you're still reading this fine print, then I should warn you that you're going to waste your time reading the rest of this fine print. Let me tell you a little story. You see, there was once this thing called 'Nebrasketball.' Nebrasketball was wondering around aimlessly looking for the perfect season. Nebrasketball tried out one season, but the result was too cold. It was riddled of low offensive scoring, blowout games, and a poor schedule. Nebrasketball said "look we're better than this, we need to keep looking for the perfect season." So then Nebrasketball went onto another season. When that season winded down, Nebrasketball said that the season was too hot. There was too much instability, the team dynamics were haywire, key players transferred, and there was too much pressure on the team that they weren't able to perform. Once again, Nebrasketball said to itself, "there's gotta be a better season." So off Nebrasketball went looking for that better season. The type of season that is full of great competition, a culture of strong will and endurance, and a team dynamic that is uncanny. A season that gets Nebrasketball into the NCAA tournament and able to compete with the big boys. A season where teams fear playing Nebrasketball because of its talent and camaraderie. A season that is juuuuuust right.

In other words, the PSU freshmen were slightly more productive because they had to be. They still finished below us in the standings.

    Program Expectations

My expectation is to get an administration and a coaching staff to be on the same page and to actually like each other. Let me explain. Devaney and Cipriano. They got along fine. Rumor has it they were drinking buddies, but who cares. Football was and is king, and before Joe came down with cancer, his teams were trending upward. 1977-78 went 23-8 and won a game in the NIT. But then, came Moe Iba. Moe's demeanor sucked, his offense boring, he had an affair with Mabel Lee and he couldn't win a game in the Big 8 Tourney to save his life. (Maybe a couple). When you hand in your letter of resignation right after you just took NU to their first NCAA Tourney game, relationship with your boss isn't good. Danny. My favorite coach. Great recruiter, great fit to be the AntiOsborne, (not a knock on Dr.Tom, Nee was just the opposite, which at the time, was refreshing). He had no problems with Bob, who hired him, and Bill Byrne, who actually supported him when most of the players walked. (Pussies...) But, Byrne, looking at attendance numbers, made a change after 13 years of good basketball. Thanks, Bill. Barry Collier. Byrne hires Collier and bolts. In comes Steve Pederson (the false prophet) and brings Marc Boehm with him. Instead of letting Collier go, he brings him back for another year and Mr. Butler bolts for safer havens in July and says screw you Nebraska. So, here comes Doc. I love this guy. He came into the coaching graveyard, and was always positive. He did his damndest. His record so far, is better than our current coach, and he never had the facilities. Tom didn't hire him, so.... Tim Miles. I'm not going to say anything about him one way or the other. His current boss didn't hire him, so I don't expect him to stay. That's understandable. It's the way of this current world. What we need is an administration and a coaching staff to be here for at least 7 years. Probably won't happen......

  21. Gallegos didn't redshirt as a freshman.
    1 point
  22. Don't count walk-ons. Redshirting a walk-on isn't terribly meaningful. And Smith and Balham were Collier recruits. I don't remember Bear Jones redshirting; Diaz only did so because admissions said he wasn't eligible for enrolment until he passed a language test, which delayed him for a semester, at which point Doc decided to have him sit the rest of the year. I think Brandon, Alonzo and Toney were a redshirt experiment that Doc decided didn't work out so well. And Ray Gallegos should have been on the list under Sadler.

Talking nothing about rankings in terms to comparing freshman. PSU has 3 freshman who were extremely productive, more so than all of our sophomores. We had zero freshman who were productive, outside of 2-3 glimpses of hope all year. I think we are falling behind, not catching up or passing these teams in our similar lower tier predicament.

  24. That's where you whiff on a guy and then use his scholarship and THEN tell him he's gone. At worst we're Beileining someone here.

  26. If we're waiting to hear back from Smith then being able to put Pickford on hold because of a lack of scholarship would actually be a good thing
    1 point
  27. He doesn't have a known offer from us. That sounds about right in pecking order unless we already know that Smith isn't coming here. Also, we're a classy organization so we can't have anyone commit until someone transfers.

  28. Michigan is just white-hot right now, I wouldn't be picking against them in the first weekend. Northwestern is also the kind of team that wouldn't surprise me to just go unconscious and do something stupid like go to the Regional final or something...or they could get blown out in the first round. Wisconsin has the "been there done that" swagger about them, they will be dangerous. Purdue's got Biggie Swanigan and he's the kind of player that can carry a team to the Final Four. Michigan State's got the Izzo factor and lots of rest. Don't sleep on Sparty. Maryland and Minnesota...I got nothin'

  42. Let me throw a rather fresh name out there. His daddy was a pretty good player for Iowa. In fact he was a heck of a three-point shooter. I am talking about Carter Kingsbury. His brother is a junior, his dad still owns Iowa three point shooting records. Carter Kingsbury is a freshman at Ponca. His 6'3" and has sort of a doughy body at this point. But the kid can shoot the three and has exceptional range...as a freshman. I believe it is worth keeping an eye on this kid. He has good pedigree, he has good size...and he can shoot the rock.

  43. Avoid the play-in game of the B1G Tourney 4/5 of the time. I would LOVE to have a Wisconsin like stay in the Conferences top 4, but will settle for top 6.

  44. While it would be nice, I do not think NIT or NCAA EVERY YEAR is realistic. There are a lot of teams that have down years all the time. It happens. Unless you are KU, Kentucky, ect., you are probably going to have a down year every once in a while. Now I agree, that losing seasons year after year after year should not happen. However, we are building, and building takes time. For us, you have to walk before you can run. My realistic expectations are that we are in the running for the NCAA most years. I am saying a "team that could win 3 games in their conference tourney and make a case for themselves. I also think that NIT should be something that we are competing for every year. However, I know that down years will happen and that will not be the case some years. If we have a run of NIT, NCAA, NIT, Losing Record, NCAA/NIT, Losing Record. I am probably going to be OK with that. We are not a Powerhouse. It will take time, and we will not have a winning record every year. I do believe though that we could be more special if we pump more $$$ into basketball.

    Sipple checks in

Dirk does make some points but he ignores year two when the team did make the tournament and was on fire in February. He basically ignores our best three point shooter leaving us in the lurch at the end of the summer. Maybe the coach was at fault but we really don't know that. And was Miles responsible for Roby's back and Morrow's foot or should he be able to foresee injuries before they happen? How about Shavon's concussion, might that have had an impact on the end of the previous year? I think it is possible to have a three year streak of bad luck and then catch some breaks. I get that Dirk doesn't like Miles, but to be fair, the case for the AD keeping him one more year is just as strong if these facts are not ignored. Meanwhile I am glad we are not in some sort of bidding war with Illinois for the latest hot coach du jour. We'll know next year at this time whether Shawn or Dirk is right. I am content to wait until then to see.And maybe Dirk's assessment of our underclassmen's talent will make them have something to prove next year.I would hate to think what his opinion of Tai was after year one or two.

  49. Probably a week or so early to speculate here until individual meetings with Miles take place and expectations for summer and next year are put on the table. Even then, some kids can still surprise people-remember Robbie Benson in One on One? Coach G.D. Spradlin tried to force him out and boy did he turn out to be great. And he really had some nice hair too. With tongue now firmly removed from cheek, I do hope no one tries something like he-who-shall-not-be-named and waits until the last minute before transferring. At least give us a chance to recruit a replacement by committing to go or stay as early as possible.
