  1. It sounds crazy for a 12-19 (6-12) season that went off the deep end at the end of the season, but hear me out. We did some pretty special things this year. - Coach Miles got to go back to his coaching roots and spend time with a plane full of University of Mary fans. - We went into the Wooden Legacy tournament and fought our way into the winners side of the bracket for the first time in a long time. - We played tough against a #14 5-0 UCLA team, keeping the game within six with three minutes to go, who finished #3 28-3 (15-3) in the regular season. - We played #3 8-1 Kansas team in historic Allen Fieldhouse and got to relive the Big 12 days a little bit. - We showed spurts of being a team that fought hard and didn't give up against really good competition. - We beat Indiana on the road when they were #16 10-2. - We beat Maryland for the first time since joining the Big Ten and did it at their place nonetheless. - We started off the conference season alone in the #1 with a 3-0 start. - We ended up beating Purdue and Maryland who finished the #1 and #3, respectively, in the Big Ten conference and went to overtime with the #2 Wisconsin. - We made a palindrome of wins and losses through 15 games in the season. - We ended the season with a Top 25 strength of schedule and were #1 and in the Top 5 most of the season, something that could not be said during non-conference play in the Doc era; it was exciting to watch elevated competition this year. - We played in a lot of close games, nine games within four points and five games within nine points. - It wasn't until 45% of the way through the conference schedule until we got blown out by an opponent. - We have a roster full of underclassman who all showed spurts of promise for the future, with only one senior on the roster. - We have had at least some level of depth on the bench for the first time in a long time. - We have been recruiting some high caliber players throughout the year. - We saw Tai grow so much throughout his career and finish off his time as a proud Husker and second-team all-Big Ten. - We got a much-needed "big man" that we were in desperate need for a few years. - We saw Jordy grow a lot throughout this season. - We saw Tyronn Lue come back to Nebraska to see his jersey retired. - The Nebrasketball community banded together and rebelled against the athletic department and continued the "Husker Power" chant. - Brian Rosenthal became the official "official" source. - Shawn Eichorst spent little-to-no-time announcing that Coach Miles will be returning to Nebraska next year, providing fans with less ambiguity, stress, and clarity than letting rumors take a life of their own over the off-season. - We played a schedule with a combined record of 487-265 (248-182) as of March 8 (which is 65% and 58% respectively) with teams currently rankes 1, 3, 12, 23, 25, and 7 other teams receiving votes. Some of those teams finishing the regular season 1st in the Atlantic-10, 1st in the Summit League, 1st in the Big 12, 2nd in Conference USA, 3rd in the Pac-12, 3rd in the SWAC, and 4th in the Big South. Teams currently projected in the NCAA tournament are seeded 1, 3, 4, 6 (x2), 7 (x2), 8 (x2), 9 (x2), and 10. It's hard not to find something good about this season. I don't know about you, but I'm excited to see what's in store for 2017-2018.

  4. I almost wish, instead of win-loss records, we had a way to figure RPI or included our SOS ranking with the record or something for a better picture of the overall year. I loved Doc, but if our current team traded schedules with one of his teams, I don't think any of us would be upset with the win-loss record. For reference, because I was curious, I actually looked up the 2010-11 schedule, which was Year 5 Doc...we went 7-9 in conference, but made it to the NIT after only losing two non-con games...because we played USC, Creighton, Vandy (lost that one) and everyone else pretty much had a "State" or a direction in their school name. Point being, it isn't really a true representation to compare wins and losses only between coaches sometimes, because I don't think anyone would argue that the level of competition was MUCH higher this year than basically any year in Doc's (or Barry's?) tenure. I'm not excusing the losses being as numerous as they were, but it only stands to reason that a harder schedule would yield more losses. If we wanted to be the SWAC champions again I'm sure we could, but this is the tradeoff for a better schedule, and honestly, considering the circumstances, I'm not really displeased about the results we got. The timing of the last slump was poor, of course, because that's what we'll focus on going into next year...but I'm glad someone brought up the cool moments and unlikely accomplishments this team had prior to the last two weeks.

  5. So I have come down from.peak disappoinment and agree with something Dimes said about Tai and Shavon (and by association, Terran, and Aleks, and Ade, and Ryan Anderson, and Brandon Ubel) We keep having A SENIOR that would have really benefitted from a cohort, a pack, a crew, a mob, whatever the relevant word is, of talented peers who came up together and grew and leaned on each other and built a team with their class, and a class younger (think King/Reid/Scales, Hayes/Owens, Chubick/Piatkowski, Strickland/Boone) I think the Sophs and Frosh this year could build that, could stick and persevere and be the foundation for the future. Dammit Here we go again.

  6. I did not want to retain Miles. However, the decision has been made and I am 100% rooting for him. No need to rehash, go negative, or divide into factions. That's what a large chunk of our football fans do and us NU hoops fans are better than that. Let's get it done next year.

  9. First off, thanks for the kind words. I probably post on here wayyyyyy to the point I'm overbearing but it's typically because I care. The hope I see in all of this is Shavon Shields and Tai Webster. We''ve propped them up with transfers but it's been those guys who put in 4 years that have really made an impact. What I see is that instead of having just one of those guys as a junior/senior we're looking at a core of those guys who are currently sophomores and freshmen. What can we do if we finally have a stable core of players who started here as freshmen? As someone pointed out, this isn't some roster devoid of hope that we're going to fill with JUCOs. Did we have some non-Mid Major flavor of the year lined up? I like Miles but I'm not married to the guy and would be real interested. If not, what is the rush to hire Yet Another Mid Major guy? If Miles isn't the guy who can put this core of players together into a winner then you can just hire Mid Major guy the year after. The guys that stick around for 2017-18 are going to be here for 2018-19. Considering what we have built and what I've seen happen to our football and WBB teams in year one of a new coach the smart play is to see if Miles can do here

  11. I'm glad for Tim. I want him to succeed, but, I'm really finding it hard to care. The team stopped showing heart, effort, basic skill weeks ago. I don't think firing the coach fixes it, but neither does keeping the coach. I wanted Barry, and Doc to succeed too but each firing and hiring made zero difference. We might as well hire Bill Murray for our little Groundhog's Day. I've been a passionate and loyal fan since the Jack Moore era, and have been on this amazing forum since the early days with Dave, but nothing changes. Dimes has made the forum incredible, still not winning. PBA and the practice facility, still no conference titles. Succession of coaches and assistants, no tournament wins, heck not even on the bubble. How many would kill for a nice NIT run in the last decade? I wish I had answers. I wish I could teach three-point defense or get B1G refs who called fouls the same way at both ends, but all I've got is this terrible sense that I've been down this road too many times. Have a great offseason long suffering Husker Hoops Fans. Rebuild your stamina because next year is going to be more of the same.

You can ALWAYS #BurnItDown, there's ALWAYS a hot mid-major guy out there just itching to take the Husker job (as long as we open the checkbook ), so what's the rush. Why chop down the tree just when it looks like it might start bearing fruit?

  20. Miles and his coaches will know that no NCAA tourney next year means they are all gone. Pressure, yes but they bring home big checks too. This is a much better scenario than hiring someone this year who would have to perform using the players Tim recruited and with half of the (small) fan base thinking the old coach was kicked out too soon. This happened with Solich and look how that turned out. Almost everyone will agree that either deliver or go next year is inevitable. Hopefully it will be deliver.

  21. Forget this season... move forward. 1. Stay healthy over the summer. 2. Find a way to get Copeland for a full year! 3. Shoot the hell out of the ball every damn day. 4. Let them shoot in "The Bank" whenever they want to. Hell... practice there more if it'll help. 5. Build us a top 100 SOS that will get us to conference play with 9-10 wins.

  22. Why in the hell tweet that at the very instant the game is over. Say that 2 weeks ago or even BEFORE the B1G tourney. My goodness it is like everyone was wanting us to play with tight knots the last 5 games.

  23. One other thought: We are a school that has committed money to basketball. We've got the facilities built and we've put money towards coaches and towards the program. We're probably willing to put forward more. Some people wield this as evidence that we should be entitled to win. I see it as reassurance that we are not destined to always lose. We are among the schools with the resources that allow us to make changes that others cannot. If you look at where we are big picture it seems pretty certain that either Miles will make it and it was the right decision or Miles won't make it and we will start over. We can and will quibble over what "making it" means but to me 16-18 isn't making it. Not going to the post season isn't making it. There is a resolution in this decision and I oddly find it stabilizing. I think stabilization would be good for this program as well and hope that we find it this next season.

    1. Put some combination of Roby/McVeigh/Horne at the 3. Before White transferred, I had concerns about the depth at Guard. When White left and Taylor arrived, my reservations heightened. We were left with 4 players to cover the 1, 2, and oftentimes 3. While Miles did start the season with McVeigh at the 3, things did not work out as intended with McVeigh and Gill was lost due to injury. Instead of putting McVeigh back at the 3 or starting Roby/Horne, Miles responded by further depleting the unit by starting Taylor. Watson and Webster play probaly 80%+ of the minutes over the entire season. By the end, both of them did not have the energy needed for the big games. Watson was hurt during the season and was forced to play. I still remember seeing Webster all beat up at the end of the Iowa double OT game. A solid 4-5 player rotation at the 1 and 2 would really help. 2. Empower Roby, Morrow, Watson, and Jacobson. These guys need to take over this team and lead. 3. Establish a firm role for McVeigh and Horne as our designated 3pt guys. Yes Horne, and at times McVeigh, can offer more, but we need a couple of snipers to open up the floor. Those two would be best in that role. Also, both could play the 2, 3, and 4 depending upon match ups. That would allow Miles to use different personnel but Horne and McVeigh would still have the same primary roles offensively. 4. For the first time in a very long time, there may be almost too much depth at the 4 and 5. Jordy, Morrow, Jacobson, and Copeland should all play equal minutes as Morrow and Copeland both have had injury issues and Jordy is still developing. Jacobson is my favorite player but has his limitations. If Miles spreads the floor and moves Roby/Horne/McVeigh to the 4, Jacobson should be the last guy playing the 5.

Our strength was rebounding all those bunnies and being average about not turning the ball over. FTR is a huge concern for a team that wasn't shooting well. You can get away with that if you're Michigan. A bad shooting team that can't get to the FT line is.....not going to the NCAA tournament.

  31. Haha... awesome. I agree though. The talent TM has brought in should be allowed to be coached at least one year at the upperclassmen level. It's pretty undeniable that every freshman from last year became better this year by quite a bit save, maybe, Jack during his slump. If we see that same jump (or a bigger jump a la Tai) in this next season among all of the sophomores and freshmen, that's the difference in several close losses we had this year. The addition of Copeland--a much more conventional scorer than Tai--and Akenten--who shoots 50% from 3 in addition to having crazy elevation to get his shot--are going to fit nicely, I think. I'm optimistic that the talent alone on next year's roster will overwhelm many teams we face. Hopefully Miles will improve as a strategist and motivator.

  33. Shields played a lot better down the stretch than Tai did, unfortunately.

  34. We will replace Tai just fine. Not a slam on the kid because he was our leader. However, Shields was our leader last year and folks wondered how we would replace him. Someone will step up and after next year if the person is a SR or JR who could leave like Petteway, we will all wonder who will fill the role.

  35. The more I think about it, the more I realize that this is the right move. Pressure creates diamonds right? Miles, Glynn Ed and MJ all seem like fighters to me. Ill admit I was mad after the game and was looking forward to a change of scenery. But after a couple beers, I'll choose to believe that the last 5 turds of basketball games have lit a fire under their ass.

Our strength on offense is getting the ball in the paint either through dribble drive or to the post. We are an average at best perimeter shooting team. I'd like to see an offense that allows Ed to play his natural position of the 4 and Jordy on the inside with Michael coming off the bench. I hope that Roby improbes enough to play the 3. At 2 either Gill or Taylor and Glynn at the point.

I would love to see us install a tempo press and use 75% of the game. If we are gonna be abysmal on defense, we might as well help ourselves out by giving the team less time to get their offense set up

  38. They all should commit to being better both individually and as a team. For Nebraska. No one should leave. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Every role on the team is important. The entire program (coaches and players) needs to hole up in the Hendricks Center and work on getting better. Start with a Joe Maddonism, do simple better, and go from there. It would be nice not to hear a thing about Nebraska basketball until the season starts next year. There's work to do. GBR!

Honestly it would surprise me more if more than 2 left than if 0-1 left. I think this group has the WANT. They want to be the ones to get is there. That in itself will go a long ways.

We never had a strength on offense. We were equally as bad inside the arch as we were outside. According to T-Rank we finished ranked #313 for 2P% and #310 at 3P%. In addition to this, our free throw rate was ranked #307 in the country. If we go into next year thinking "the process" works I'm worried it will be the same on that end of the court.

  45. Don't look at it that way. Look at it more like chess pieces. I didn't think it was going to be this acute, but we lacked for shooters this year. Glynn obviously improved his perimeter shooting percentages significantly, but Tai wound up being somewhat of a disappointment this year, as did Jack. Despite what you think, we are still moving around some chess pieces and one of our pawns next year will become a queen. ( I mean a queen like in chess, not like a guy in drag.) And, hey, if it doesn't work, what is one more year? The business model of changing coaches every five or six years hasn't exactly paid a lot of dividends, now has it?
    2 points
  46. The difference between now and the end of the Collier and Sadler years is that we actually have some talent and a bit of depth. We need a couple of guys on this team to step up and become leaders. I think Michael will be one of them. I think Glynn needs to be the other. We have 4 scholarship Sr.'s on the team next year but maybe only one of them will start, perhaps Gill and there could be a case for an extra year due to losing him for the majority the season. Tim needs to find an upgrade at assistant coach. Someone who can compliment him the way Smith did.

  48. I'm honestly surprised about this. So my guess is SE doesn't want to get rid of Tim bc this was the perfect opportunity. 5 straight losses, 4 blowout losses including the largest home defeat ever, and a team that just looks defeated. Glad he's back, but can't say I'm as excited about next season as I was two weeks ago.
