  1. Bill Self should grow a pair and take on a real fucking challenge. You're a Hall of Fame coach, right? Then fucking prove it. Come to Nebraska.

  2. There was nothing that felt normal about this game. Even before it started, it felt strange. This was the valley to the peak that was No Sit Sunday. Like this day, NSS was unseasonably warm. Unlike today, it was also brilliantly bright. The sun was out, the party was on. Today was somber and dreary. The drum corp that played in front of PBA before the game started couldn't have been more out of place. In the building, there was a sense of dread, it was ominous. Miles and Eichorst shared a big hug right before the Senior Day celebration began. That seemed unwarranted given the atmosphere around the program the past couple of weeks. Once the game began, nothing was right. Nothing. The defense was as bad as I've ever seen it. This isn't the team I watched for the first 24 or so games of the season. For the first three quarters of the season, this team competed. They played good defense, they played semi competent offenseively, they played hard. They did none of those things today. I can't tell you why. Coach struggled with it in his post game. Did they wear down? Did everything since AW3 left catch up to them? Was everything we saw since November a mirage? Even the first time they played Michigan they were a much different team. The team we saw on the floor today had no direction. Today was just sad. Sad because we had to say goodbye to a great player today. The performance they put on the floor was such a disparate sendoff to everything Tai represented. NU will have a huge gap to fill next season. You hope that the trials this group went through this year will be a terrific education for what they'll face next year and beyond. I believe this group is very talented and will only become even more so when they add what they add next season. The way they finished this season sounds alarms, though. I don't know what happens next. I really don't. I still believe the future is very bright. The moment is pretty dim, though.

  3. Altman is signed through 2023 and is one of the top 20 paid coaches in div 1. http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2016/11/oregon_dana_altman_agree_on_7-.html I'll give Altman the same odds of roaming the PBA as I'd give a talking dog with an urn full of John Naismith's remains.

  4. John Calipari. I'm looking at you, you smug fucker. Prove you can recruit NBA lottery picks to Lincoln, and then I'll finally not think you're a complete douche. (Well, I will, but you'll be OUR complete douche.)

Clear editor As everyone probably knows, I don't generally like complaining about coaches and I don't join the angry mob with pitchforks in hand wanting to run the current coach out of town on a rail. So, with that background, one thing that stood out to me last night is that the Michigan players understood their offense and knew where the shots were going to come from. I'm not sure our players have ever really understood that under Miles. Just to kind of provide context, I remember sitting in on practices with Doc Sadler and he would point to spots on the floor where, in a given sequence we would be running, the offensive opportunities would happen. What action leads to what kind of shot opportunity where on the floor. I think the kids from Michigan could answer that question; I'm not sure our Husker players really could. Having guys like Petteway, who were able to create their own shots, helped conceal the fact that there doesn't appear to be a systematic way of creating open looks with this offense.

  6. Nebraska has the best fans in college basketball. Sorry, KU, but Allen Fieldhouse would be a half-empty barn if Jayhawk fans had to put up with what we've put up with the past 20 years or so.

  7. Steve Taylor has always struck me as arrogant on Big Red Reaction after FB games. The way he would bash Armstrong, you would've thought Taylor was Tom Brady. What a horrible question to pose.

    Thanks Tai

I wasnt able to watch Tai's senior night but its been great to see his career unfold. He has been resilient and done things the right way, trusting the process. Funny story. Tai is 17 and playing on the New Zealand Breakers pro team. He is whats called a development player and only plays as much as a walk on. One game the team is up big with only a minute to go and Tai gets subbed in. The team has a promotion where if they score 100 points the whole crowd gets free Burger King. The team is currently on 98 points. Long story short Tai ends up with the ball on a fast break, nobody in front of him. He rises up to dunk it...and then after 2 hours sitting on the bench puts it right into the bottom of the rim and costs 7000 people free burgers. I think he might have even put a tweet out jokingly apologising. Perhaps that traumatised him into barely dunking his college career. Gonna miss seeing him play for the huskers.

  10. It doesn't matter who we get. It's the same song and dance with Nebraska. The new coach will come in, we will be crappy for a couple of years. We will become good enough to make the NIT. Then, we will have a crappy year, and need a new coach, and the merry go round will continue.

  11. I just realized you didn't mean the coach at Syracuse. I am so dumb.

  12. Actually you did compare the two. Failing as a Nebraska Basketball coach is the norm not the exception and if you compare TM to the previous two coaches he would not be considered a failure. SE is not very bright and he will certainly find a way to muck this up badly as he did for his previous two coaching hires. He has already put himself in a bad position by not renewing TM contract last year. He either has to fire him or extend his contract. I believe he is going to fire him and we will be right back here again in 4-5yrs.

  13. Maybe Taylor wants to put Miles home on the market. He's a realtor now, isn't he?

  14. His Senior year and probably his Junior year, Taylor was the second best QB on the team...Nobody realized it until Gdowski started for one year after he graduated.

  15. Sometimes it's tempting to get down on our fan base for not being engaged or vocal - I know I have before. But if you were there last night, you would have seen 14K in the stands that witnessed the program cap off their 5th losing season in 6 years with the worst home loss in history. And with all that said, there were 50+ fans in the corner of the stands applauding the team as they went off the floor. Kudos to our fan base - they deserve an A+ for perseverance.

  16. Open up the wallet for Greg Marshall. Whatever it takes. This guy plays the perfect brand of basketball stylistically for college basketball, and he has a great eye for talent and his players always seem to get really good while there. He would be one guy that could win here. Cost probably out of reach, but he would be exactly who I would want.

  17. The drummers at halftime were pretty good. I could do without the jackets wrapped around the waists of the Scarletts. That's not really a look I dig. But then, some of them don't really rock the spandex look either. I was impressed with the younger official doing warmups before the game. He's in shape. And, I would strenuously note that no one is blaming the refs tonight, so I wish all you ref defenders would quit with the old canard that we always blame the refs when we lose. Clearly that's not true.

  19. Let me start by saying, I don't think it will happen. I think we have checked out for some reasons that we don't know at this time. That being said, how do we change this up to make a surge? Here are some things I would do. 1. Go to almost all zone defense. Our man to man has gone off the rails. Nobody has any understanding of how much room to give whoever they are checking. Watson keeps getting beat so easily that it compromises the entire thing. And then we have to double too many types of post players, which leads to even more wide open threes. I would like to see a match up zone that has some man to man principles. Zone also creates less running around. If we are going to win 5 in 5 days we have to play mostly zone IMO with a lot of focus on who we don't want shooting the ball. We can also implement some box and one principles. Changing strategy can refresh teams. Give them a new lease on life so to speak. And momentum can be a funny thing. If something starts working then you have guys playing harder in the scheme. 2. In conjunction with the zone, we need to sit Taylor to start the game. When we struggle to shoot as it is, lets put Jack in to start the ballgame. Lets come out with Tai, Watson, Jack, Morrow and Jake. Gives us a little more offense and a little more length in the zone. And lets get Roby and Horne ready to come in asap. Roby needs to play a lot in said zone as his length is a great fit for this defense. Horne also can be hidden in a zone and ride him if he looks good on offense. If not, give his minutes away quickly. Sitting Taylor also gives us a natural rotation to use when Watson or Tai need a blow. I cannot envision either positively or negatively how Jordy fits with the zone scheme. No problem using him for minutes so long as he is playing well. Ride him if he is, bench quickly if he is not. 3. MARK THE SHOOTERS WE DONT WANT TO BE SHOOTING. Cannot be stressed enough and this is critical tournament basketball concept. 4. Use 15 seconds or so and then get in the offense so long as we are able to get looks this way. Watched Jacksonville st. punch a ticket doing just this and frustrating the hell out of their opponents. If we are winning 5 in 5 we need to get rest. This is a way to help do that. 5. Don't be afraid to use a 2-3 or match up zone. Just because we haven't done much of it doesn't matter. They aren't overly complicated defenses and the power of fresh minds and confidence are huge for us. We are better than we have played of late. Any bit of success, even if a bit random or fluky can go miles in a tournament setting. 6. Switch defenses constantly. Again a strategy switch. Anything fresh that gives us a chance to mentally engage rather than getting beat with the same old thing. 7. Let Roby free. Play him a bunch. I think back to Shields freshman year. He rose onto the scene in a huge way in this tournament. Would love to see Roby make any sort of step that remotely resembles that. 8. Tai Watson Jack Roby Morrow Jake Horne Jordy Taylor in that order for minute allocation. I would also not play Taylor unless absolutely necessary. Feel like he was sort of fools gold for us in a way this year. We need guys that can shoot the ball out there and live with some of the flaws for the greater good(IE opening up some driving lanes that have been erased) These are some of the ideas I have. Would like to hear some of yours.

  20. Exactly why I brought up the article late last night... It boggles the mind how much sh!t the players deal with *off* the court.... smh

  21. How did Pitch or White not improve? The sort of improvement you will see with Tai is extraordinary. It was a combination of him having high end athletic ability, putting the time in on his shot, and his overall commitment to getting better. Compare and contrast the athleticism of these guys vs our early HS recruits like Hawkins, Vuceitc, Fuller, and Hammond. Doesn't it seem likely that the majority of them possess the raw potential that Tai had? Doesn't it seem like some of them have already progressed in their short time?

  23. I like offenses that create good shots...rather than relying on players to try to create good shots. Doc had his failings...but I would tell anyone that would listen that his offense would create good shots...he just didn't have the players to make those shots. If you are going to rely on athletes to create offense rather than a system...you better have the best athletes in the conference.... It is why I would look for a system coach....someone that has to grind out an offense where he is at...not someone who has the best players in his current league...because that will never ever happen at Nebraska.

  24. Guessing it is a context thing. They were going to make shots. But shots on top of shots on top of shots. Seemed like they would go minutes at a time without missing and every time they made another after the one before it became increasingly demoralizing.

  25. I thought that Tai played one of his most uninspired games of the year. He didn't look for his shot or really try to create much for himself. He did have a couple of very nice assets but not much else.

  28. It has to be a damn one hour prep for coaches to figure out how to scheme for us defensively. Put your best defender on Tai. Don't let Glynn go right (because he cant drive/pull up to his left). Let literally anyone take 3's. Play behind the bigs and let Jordy, Ed, or MJ either convert, miss, or turn the ball over by bringing it down, dribbling too much, etc. And...that's pretty much it. Holy hell we need a shooter. You suck AW3

  37. I believe I settled this question many moons ago. There should be a thread entitled something like "Miles doesn't develop players and other myths" on here somewhere. Maybe that's not what I called it. Can't remember. But I went through all the guys Miles has had who were 4-year players and looked at their improvement over time.

  38. Ugh. I've been a Miles apologist since he got here. In my dream world, he'd be promoted to an assistant AD position because I honestly see that as his strong point--great ambassador, incredible seller, cool dude who sees the big picture. Watching last night, my belief in his in-game abilities as a coach and basketball philosopher are truly waning. The talent we have on our roster should keep us in every game. I was never going to be basing this season on W/L, but more along the lines of what I saw as signs of improvement. I saw those signs at the beginning of the year against UCLA, KU, Creighton (for a half), then later in the year versus Maryland, Indiana, Iowa, and Purdue. But then we had our Gardner Webb and Rutgers games. Then we had the end of the regular season with blowout after blowout. It's impossible to defend or pass it off as youth. The end of the season's struggles have been because of coaching--something is awry and the team has been lost. I'll go on the record saying I'm okay with Miles being here next season to coach one of the most talented rosters Nebraska has ever had because it was his staff's crazy work ethic on the road that created this massive change in talent. That said, if the feelers do go out... I'd be on board with Gottfried. His firing is absurd given he's made the tournament 5 out of the last 6 years with NC State, two of which were Sweet 16's. Ridiculous. And it's no fluke--the guy took Bama to the Elite 8 before NC State. He's an outstanding coach and great recruiter. The Gregg Marshall, Dana Altman, Kelvin Sampson wants are simply not possible. These are all coaches who have earned restructured contracts running several years down the road. Gottfried doesn't have a gig, but he'll be swooped up extremely fast. Interesting times. Hopefully we'll just win the B1G Tournament so there's nothing to talk about. We have everyone right where we want them.

  41. Penn St is a great opponent to work the kinks out on. Whenever Jordy is in the game we make a very concerted effort to get him the ball in the post. To me, it makes a lot of sense to put him into the game when the offense is either gassed/stalled or else we need to go on a defensive run and he can put in all the effort on the offensive side.

  42. Firing Miles at this point in time is just plain stupid! I'm so sick of reading/ hearing this. First Christs' sakes, if people can't see the progress he's made in the quality of athletes he's brought to this program compared to the prior regimes (Barry and Doc) then people are just plum dumb. He was given a program with very little talent and has turned the roster into almost all top 150 rated players. He deserves the chance to see this through. We are a very young team! We should be thankful and let him see what he can do as he and the coaching staff develops this talent!

  46. As fans, we deserve better than consistent losing seasons and post-season droughts. I want wants best for Nebraska basketball when it comes to long term success and if that means losing a first round conference tourney game to make the necessary changes to become the type of program we all want, then so be it. Now if we go out and actually play like we care and win a couple games, so be it with that too. Whatever is best for the the Nebraska basketball program
