    I am just sad

After the game today I just sat in my seat and tried to think how I felt at that exact moment. The answer I came up with is sad. I say sad because I know that I will come home and start to hear from the people who really don't pay attention to the games (or trolls) say that we are bad and that Miles needs to go. I am sad that people have to start leaving in droves at the 4:16 mark of a home game. I am sad that those kids on that team have played so hard this year and I think that there just isn't anything left in the tank. I am sad that those coaches have worked so hard this year to make these kids better and that they now have to hear the whispers. I am sad for the players and coaches families who love their people as much as they do and have to watch all this kind of start to fall apart. I am sad for the fans who keep hoping and cheering and trying to help in any way to get this team to win. And I will say that I am being a bit selfish here but I am sad for me , because I so want this program to be good and get people's respect. I will go to sleep tonight and it will be better tomorrow, it always is, but for now I am sad.

You know Sam I just went from sad to Mad. And yes I am going to make it a commentary on their character. Because it was just stupid for all those people to be leaving early. I would like to see the amount of people who leave early from a concert at PBA before the last couple of songs? Or that's right they can have another drink, or they paid so much more or the concert was the best ever. And that game wasn't good. Well guess what I bet we don't get the A efort from some of these shows that come in here either. Plus the biggest problem I have is all this talk about the rudeness of our fans to the other team with the Husker Power Chant. BUT IT IS OKAY TO BE RUDE TO YOUR OWN TEAM BY LEAVING EARLY? GOT ONE WORD FOR THAT AND IT RHYMES WITH FULL FIT. You know it is a commitement to by and attented all those games. And I undersatnd if the roads are bad, your kid has a game, it is 11:00 and you need to go to work tomorrow and still need to drive 2 hours. BUT IT WAS 8:30 OUR LAST GAME WE WERE ABOUT AT OUR SECOND TV TIME OUT AT 8:30. So yeah I am calling out some people. Because it is what is really rude at the PBA. Now give me those down arrows!

At the end of this season I am going to write a long post that might help you understand about being a Husker basketball fan, and how this year has been for me in general. But it does have to wait until this has all played out, because you just never know, what... could... still... happen... this... year... Because this chapter isn't over. Yet.

  6. What a game to end up on!! Way to protect the home court these last two home games!! Michigan State just about won it at the end had that full court shot been 12 inches shorter. Once our big girls decided to play some solid defense from the middle of the third quarter on we turned into another team out there. Our defense fueled our offense and it helped secure this game. And one that was fun to watch! That had to be Allie's best defensive output of the year. That kid also grabbed some big and crucial rebounds down the stretch. Wouldn't have won without her today. It also turned out to be Maddie Simon's best game of her career so far. Jess Shepard with huge numbers again, just wish she'd do a better job on the foul line. I'm extremely ecstatic over how well our two freshmen starters played today!! Nicea E, although she didn't hit a bucket, she played her arse off the whole time she was on the court!! Her defense, hustle, fight and determination is a major reason we won today! Nicea held Jankoska to seven points the whole afternoon, Jankoska scored the rest of her point's when Nicea was on the bench taking a breather or after she fouled out. That darn technical Nicea was assessed with could have went on either team as there was pushing and shoving on both teams, Jankoska was the one who initiated it, Nicea just happened to be the one the ref saw. How about that other freshman? Hannah with some fantastic shots and rebounds just at the right time! I wished that they would have run more plays for her over the course of the season for getting her open for more shots. The way she can put the ball in the hole is just going to get better as she matures the next few years. Cu-do's to a fantastic atmosphere, without a doubt, the crowd turned out to be a sixth player for the Huskers down the stretch! Just an unbelievable way to end play in PBA this year.

  7. To answer your question yes we had 2 recruits from Minnesota there. Both 2018 kids I believe. -- and special shout out to Maddie. She has taken some heat on here by a few posters but she was great yesterday for the second gm n a row and we wouldn't have won without her. She had 3 of the biggest hustle plays of the gm; scored the ball and had 4 asst against zero TO in 28 minutes.

Part of me expects that when we finally do win a tournament game it will come in a year when we have a losing regular season and win the automatic bid at the conference tourny.

  9. The banked 3 was just pure luck. Never make that shot again.....just threw it up. Had she missed.... the game was over. We have figured out how to win. We decided to want it enough. Make a decent percentage on FT's, and it would have been won in regulation. Nicea's defense gave us a chance...she gets the awesome award today. Jess and Hannah deserve it too...Allie played her guts out. Maddie came in and played much more in control and we benefited from it. Just the greatest effort this year...and for that matter one of the better ones in the last few years. To be the team we started, and with little experience.... to grow up into a tough B1G competitor. AWESOME!!

I'm not going to attempt to polish a turd or to say that things are wonderful or anything like that. I would, however, like to offer some perspective. A few weeks ago, I pointed out that, while we have some star power, it's still the case that our stars are young. Tai was unranked but is playing like the kid Fran Fraschilla thought he would be. But he's our only senior and there is no star power in the junior class at this point. Let's compare that to Illinois for a second. Malcolm Hill is Illinois' leading scorer. He was a 4-star recruit out of high school in the class of 2013, ranked the #68 player in the nation by Rivals. He's a senior. Maverick Morgan is also a senior. He's their 2nd leading scorer and an experienced big man. Tracy Abrams is also a senior. He's the fourth-leading scorer for Illinois. He was a Rivals 4-star and the 58th-ranked player nationally in the class of 2011, making him not just a senior, but a 6th year senior. Last year, they also had Kendrick Nunn, a Rivals 4-star and #60 recruit nationally, in place of Abrams who was injured. And, with that star-studded group of juniors, they managed 5 conference wins and had just 13 wins overall entering the conference tournament. So ...

  11. Fans give yourself a pat on the back!! MSU head coach Suzy Merchant said she was disappointed that her veteran players on the team didn't response and step up to the tough environment you get when playing at places like PBA. Thought NU played with a lot more effort and energy than her Spartans.

  12. Just a shout out to the ladies for continuing to play hard after falling behind in the 1st Q and getting it done on Senior Day! A little too close for comfort in the last seconds there. You hit your free throws and you don't have to be concerned about losing on a 2/3 of the court shot. But overall proud of the effort and most of the execution.

  13. So expectations again...the season is going to turn out about how everyone expected it to. Pieces are in place but people are doubting Miles' ability to coach them into anything. Then you look at Webster as a successful developer over 4 years and think that this type of development could occur with several other young guys on the roster. Guys, Tai is hurting. Multiple body parts. His tank is about empty and he's who the team is relying on. We beat a Purdue, take Wisconsin to OT, and have a game like the one against Penn State and fans are liking what they see. They see flashes of what could be a very bright future. Then you have games like the ones against Michigan State and Illinois and fans say NCAA tournament win won't ever happen with Miles and that he needs to go. Win now or get out mentality and that he's out of excuses. I get it but nobody expected a lot from this season. The frustration I think comes from being close, getting the flashes of what could be, having hope, and then falling flat on our faces the next game. That's where it comes from. That's the reality of having a young team. That doesn't excuse the losing but it's a reality that has to be added to the discussion. If we were getting blown out by 20 and 30 every game then I don't think the level of frustration would be so high. Personally, I really hope we stay the course with Miles because to me I see the potential of a young talented team. Others are over it, and i can see why someone might have those thoughts. I have zero faith in Eichorst hiring a basketball coach. Zero. I could see him staying the course because of his other 2 hires here still being very questionable in my mind, but I could also see him trying to redeem himself on the first 2. Scary stuff. Zero faith in Eichorst.

  17. Great game, and such a great win for the girls!! I know I'm late, but I always follow the comments. All the different input is great; no matter if it's positive or critical of the girls...Nicea had zero's in the last 2 games. She cut her hand in practice before the Michigan game and had to get 6 stitches. So she's been playing with her 2 fingers taped together - which obviously she hasn't figured out how to make a shot with lol (no excuses!). But after that Michigan debacle she said she wanted to show that she can still put her stamp on the game by playing tough defense...anyhoo proud of the girls bc even if we lose all I wanted to see was effort. I'm glad they're finally showing they want to win! Illinois is definitely beatable!!

  18. To guard a scorer like Jankoska you have to real quick reactions, speed, and be in her face all the time. Nicea had Jankoska really frustrated, and she went after Nicea a few times. Nicea is the best defender on the team ...period. I still maintain she was the difference maker yesterday....no points or not. No one else can defend like Nicea...no one. Easily seen in the 7 pt VS 22 points difference. We need a couple more like her. Maybe the two red shirt guards are good defenders...we'll see.

They voluntarily chose to attend a sporting event; it's not like 6:30 Sunday night games are the only time people stream for the exits at the last media timeout; and it's not really a complaint about people's character, but more about how it kills the atmosphere and probably demoralizes the players to a certain extent to see everyone leaving early. If they had chosen instead to attend Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" at 6:30 on a Sunday night, would you be OK with the crowd streaming out before the fat lady sings?

I have to be brutally honest for a minute and just share what's on my mind: 1. I love Miles, et al, but this staff is not going to make us a consistent NCAA/NIT qualifier. 2. In spite of #1, I have little confidence Eichorst would bring in a coach that would do better than Miles (should he make a change this year or next). Wow. That's depressing.

  23. no doubt fans have been seeing a different hannah the past few weeks. looks far more comfortable out there and appears to want the ball in her hands moving down the court----and, she can handle the ball very well. you see her reacting to/with the crowd. she is learning how to create a shot for herself (which i would have liked to see her do earlier in the season, but, hey....). without dredging up the old stuff, things have worked out very nice for hannah and excited for next season and beyond. regular season stats for hannah: (from huskers.com) min/game 689 avg. minutes 24.6 fg's: 82-204 40.2% 3pt'ers: 53-133 39.8% ft's: 27-37 73% 67 rebounds 76 assists to 43 turnovers 4 blocks 27 steals 244pts for 8.7 avg

I'm not sure if I was in the minority or the majority, but I didn't expect much this year. We're young, and my hope was that the team would have it together at the end of the season so we could see how great things could be next year. But right now we don't have a realistic chance of getting to .500 and we're at 93 in KenPom. That's not much of a platform to build off of. Things can change, and the next win will make the clouds part, but for right now .... sad.

  25. One could actually argue that we've played better on the road than at home this year... UCLA, Dayton, VA Tech, KU, Clemson, Maryland, Indiana... That bodes well for the Big 10 tourney though... if there is a silver lining.

  28. Minnesota last year did less with more. They had 8 wins TOTAL, and they had more talent than most teams. Both of those coaches have zero trips to the NCAA tournament. Granted, they probably make it this year. Miles' first 2 years, his teams got better at the end of the season. I think this year, we just are mentally fatigued.

  31. if you look at the two bios, it appears both can score, but, Morton did win accolades as a defensive player earning a spot on the first Mac All Defensive Team. Her 223 steals earned her a spot in the top ten all time for Eastern Michigan. anyway, appears Morton may be a little more defensive minded while Stallworth may be more offense minded.

I also wasn't at home watching the Oscars. The intent wasn't to call out the crowd or anyone else. The intent was to try and deal with this team seemingly fail in the worst way when what you most desperately want them to do is put it together because you think they are at some sort of cross roads...which might involve lashing out against anything. Reading about it the next day isn't the same as the in game despair no matter how many times you might have experienced it in the past...how I felt leaving that arena wasn't necessarily the same way I've felt about any other similar sort of loss.

  35. Call me rude if you wish but if I buy tickets to go see the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the PBA and their music is akin to being down 16 points with four minutes to go I'm making the trek back to my car to save some time on the drive home back to Omaha. If anything, the fans should be praised for continuing to show up(14K last night) for a team that once again is going to finish at the bottom of the conference. IMO There aren't many fanbases out there that would continue to fill up their stadium with the lack of results over the past few years.

  36. I just did a quick survey of shooting percentages this century, just shooting percentage, not broken down by home or road or anything like that. I'm finding a strong correlation between NU having higher shooting percentages with the years they've had their best shooters. I think that's the bigger issue. For instance, in the four seasons, including this one at PBA, their best shooting percentage, by about 20 points was the one that had HWSNBN III on it. Get better shooters.

  39. I have watched Maddie with great admiration over the years. Her athleticism and dedication were never in doubt. I think the whole saga of a new coach, offense etc. set her back mentally this year as her confidence took a big hit. The last two games have given us a glimpse of her upside. I believe she will continue to absorb the changes and will be a big asset going forward.

  42. Even after this Illinois game, I feel that if we can give Collier, and Sadler, 6 seasons, with what they did. We should give Miles a 6th year. That NCAA tourney bid (coach of the year also btw) bought him another year or two if you ask me. When it clicks, I think it will be worth the wait, and investment in time with coach Miles.

BOOM!

  46. my heart sank when that happened---------that shot reminds us just how cruel sports can be. yes, i am going to overlook some other elements of the game, BUT, right after it happened i was thinking the team and the seniors deserved better than that. i would have accepted your "basic" look at a 3 pointer, but, the way she shot it, angle she shot it, banking it off the glass and huskers right there-----i am not sure she could ever make that again. will have to look for a replay of the shot.
