  1. Last week Miles said Ed Morrow would be re-evaluated this week on his health status. I'm guessing nothing stated by this time. What do you say we speed the process up? Jesus said in Mark 16:18 about his followers: "They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." I'm a follower of Christ and I know many others on this board are, too. I won't get access to Ed, but I bet he gets access to this site. If he doesn't know about it, I'm sure someone here will clue him in. Tell him just to grab the monitor and accept his healing. Laying on of hands works. Here is a Seth update: Back in July when so many on this site gave generously to the fundraiser we had for Seth, he had to get a blood transfusion every two weeks to keep his red blood count at an acceptable level and he was on the Mayo list for a bone marrow transplant. Today, he goes two months between transfusions, he's off the Mayo list and the doctors don't know why. We always look at each other, smile, and we know why. Lay your hands!

    WBB: Game #18 @ Illinois

This is simply a tougher year than I at least, expected or hoped. The new coaches, loss of players, sensitive issues because of loss of Yori and staff. ...etc etc etc Like I've thought many times this year, we'll be a much different team next year. Rachel will be back..hopefully, and the two red shirted guards, plus Kissinger. The current team just isn't deep enough talent wise, (because of graduation, players leaving, etc) and all that is amplified by so many inexperienced freshmen we have to play a lot. But do believe we've gotten an awful lot, and as much as can be expected from the freshmen. Too bad we had to put so much pressure on the new kids. Coaches...they have to work with what was here when they came. It just won't be rebuilt in one or even two years. While it's exasperating, and frustrating at times...think patience...patience

I've never had any issue being critical of some issues I've had with TM - but I'm really not sure what you're getting at here. At this point, Jordy is flat out terrible. You're basically praying he doesn't make a mistake on defense and that he's gonna actually catch the ball without traveling/throwing up some weird shot on offense. If he's ever effective here, it won't be until his Junior/Senior year. The fact Miles gets him any minutes at all is solely a credit to his foresight and attempt to get Jordy minutes so he can gauge where he's at and get used to game speed at this level. Also, as others have said, scoring wasn't the problem yesterday. If you keep creeping within 3pts and then proceed to not be able to give up stops - playing the freshman (Horne) who's prone to defensive errors and rebounding errors - is not the right play. Could Horne have stepped up and made some amazing play to get us over the hump? Absolutely. But that's on him to correct those other mistakes so he's trusted to be on the court to do so. Our coaches have this team in a great position right now. Let's chill, and buy in. We have to be committed to making our home game environments ridiculously hostile - we are in control of our destiny right now.

  4. One thing I thought was positive from the game was Roby in his first start. Had a solid stat line and overall played well. He needs to work on his footwork (too many travels) but I think sometimes that comes with trying to move too fast. The game should slow down for him soon. That dude is one smooth passer and really distributes the ball well. I can see why Miles thinks he could run the point/initiate the offense. On Fuller, I think coach felt like we were missing Ed's toughness. The next toughest dude we have is Nick. Thought he played that role well. Jacobsen was driving me nuts on the offensive end. When he gets in the post he acts like he's the size of Benny Parker. For God's sake, get the ball, go hard to the hoop and if it gets block, fine. Just stop with the hesitation and weak ass shots. I love his effort but he's got to play bigger since he is 6'9" with a nice vertical to go with it!

So I didn't get to watch the game - but what you're describing sounds like a late stunt to help in a pack defense. The basic fundamental of any pack defense is that you're in help early, before the other guy's drive has started, then as he nears you on the drive, you're cutting him off, anticipating him to pass to the guy you're guarding so you can close out to him. However, sometimes you have to help a bit late, which means you're lunging towards the gap to help the drive while the drive is already happening. This a breakdown in the defense that requires your team to make a decisions - do we all stunt and go or do we fully rotate? Sounds like the situation you're describing we rotated to help and the first guy who left had to scramble to find the open guy. Puts your team in a tough situation, yet if done right, guarantees no open kick out shot. Stunt and go, if done right, guarantees you won't lose a man since no one is rotating/switching - but if the stunts are hard enough and the guys don't recover well enough, you'll give up drive angles leading to kick outs. Where I've seen Nebraska struggle defensively these past two years has been being somewhat in the middle on that decision of whether we'll rotate or stunt and go. Also, regardless of that decision, when we lose/give up 3's, we seem to struggle to "help the helper." Defenses that are consistently elite at helping the guy who had to help win ball games. It shows awareness, anticipation, teamwork, and lack of indecisiveness.

It all depends on what you are willing to give up. If you are willing to live with more easy baskets at the rim...then you can take away the wide open 3...if you want to stop the drive, you will leave yourself vulnerable to open 3. I think sometimes you just need to mix up your defenses...sometimes take away the drive..other times stick to the shooter...It is very tough to take away both options....but by varying what you take away...the guy who is driving might anticipate the help and throw the ball right to our guy that has stayed on the shooter.....

  13. Fastbreaker - Usually what separates mid major kids from big 5 kids is size. Heart will take care of size in some cases. I just finished looking at the Va Tech/Wakeforest game and the girl from Va Tech just scored 20+. The announcers said that she was overlooked coming out of high school. She was one of our focuses on the scouting report when we played them earlier this year. There are are some players in the big 10 that should be at mid majors and vice versa. I think that the coaches see the gaps and will get the players needed to be successful. It might take 2-3 years but you have to remember that they are playing with someone else's cards right now. Some people might be saying that some of these players are mid major players. We just have to keep bringing out the positives and hopefully things will turn around. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Nothing earth shaking just a question. I see us leave a guy who has hit like two in a row from three to stop a guy who already has to make a lay up over two maybe three guys. Just wanted to see if antbody else had thought about it. Guess so.

You and Jim Weeks of Beatrice fame would agree with one another. To the tune of many wins. Problem with this philosophy is you will run into teams who dominate you in the post, backdoors, well organized ball screen action, and a lot of and1's at the rim. In other words, college basketball players are too good with the ball, too good at the rim, and coaches are too good with their spacing and actions to not help.

Agree with you on this Norm. One thing nobody mentioned in this thread yet is that not only did Jeriah miss assignments on defense and rebounding, when Jack got it, he promptly knocked down a couple 3's. At that point, the minutes have to go to Jack. I sure hope that kid is getting his confidence back, we need more McTrey's this season! For the record, I LOVE Jeriah's game and think he has huge upside but in this case, coach made the right call.

Question: what if we just let the guy drive and not help the helper? He makes a two instead of a three correct? If they make 6 threes off of this in a game that would be 6 less points that we gave up, correct. Isn't that kind of what Michigan allowed us to do? We got 40 some points in the paint with the dribble drive and how many times did we kick out to the open man? Just seems like sometimes we should be willing to give up the contested drive shot in the paint rather than letting a good three point shooter have a free look. Just asking.

I would agree with this. We tend to be pretty good when we help, but where we breakdown is helping the helper. I've noticed we struggle with teams who have really good ball movement. Good ball movement will hurt help defenses if everyone isn't on the same page.

i had heard in the past there were gopher fans that were not real impressed with the stollings hire. even though banham was there to make things much more tolerable. the comments aren't coming from a story, just fans talking. like most do. when minny was searching for a coach, many wanted the ad to look at hiring johnson (from sdsu) but there were others who were stating there is NO WAY minny is going to hire a male basketball coach. they were right on that one. anyway, now coach yori's name is being thrown out there-------------so, it's just fans talking. i just thought it was interesting coach yori's name was thrown out there. no real story. imo, i would be real surprised if stollings would be fired at the end of the season--------unless the squad really tanks badly and appears to be in turmoil. from what i have heard and read, the players like stollings------but, that can change in a hurry.

  23. The club team thing has pretty much ruined the school and local league play in most sports. Now a kid in Omaha, grade school age, can go play baseball or basketball, soccer, etc, etc, and play 50 or 60+ games in a season. In the 90's there were only 3 or 4 club teams in many sports...now there dozens. They see it as ....why play for a grade school/ middle school team, and play 10-15 games, when I can be cool and play on a club team with cool uniform, and be elite and play 50 games. All the club team play creates an illusion for many...and their parents. Some of the problem has become many of these "club" kids later on, aren't good enough to make high school teams...weren't good enough player to make a "good" club team to start with. And some parents just don't get it, and they go nuts because their club athlete is cut from school teams. And by the time their cut from school teams early on, they say to heck with it and quit all together. ...and some kids burn out by the time their ready for high school...have played a sport (s) since their maybe 7 or 8, and hundreds of games later...that's enough for me. And injuries occur from many years of play...even at 12 or 13. All of this stuff detracts from playing for their school, and staying on the school team, like it was prior to the advent of the whole club thing. So there's lots of reasons...it's pretty complicated anymore. And now days there's just so much other stuff to detract from sports.

Help defense is a must in college basketball, but every player has to rotate and often, when you see a guy closing out late to a player hitting the wide open three...it might not be because he helped, but because others didn't do their job in the help situation and he either helped too much. I have always coached man to man defense with help, but if one guy doesn't follow the "rules" you see wide open shots...and often the guy scrambling back to cover the wide open shooter is not the guy who should get "yelled" at...but someone else didn't rotate properly and the guy diving back is trying to recover because not everyone rotated properly. Also, I had guys that were told not to leave their man...in situations where there was a specific player that you didn't want to get an open shot.

  26. We gave up 51 points in the 2nd half. Horne didn't play in the 2nd half. It's not like the players who are getting the minutes over him are defensive stoppers. Other than Tai and Glynn, he may be our third best option to create offense. McVeigh look like he missed some assignments on D and Horne out rebounded him. Fuller had 3 fouls in five minutes and unfortunately is no threat on offense (which is too bad because in high school he was a very good scorer). In the last minute, when we need 3s, Horne is still on the bench. That isn't about defense or rebounding, because we were just fouling. Jordy is a work in progress, has some good moments and bad. Not sure how many true freshmen centers come in and play very well their 1st year, so I'm guessing we will see a big improvement in Jordy next year.

  28. tough game. especially 2nd half. when a team shoots the %'s illinois did, defensive effort sticks out. still, think illinois would have beat many teams sunday afternoon. look at the one layup the one illinois player had in the second half-------how the heck did that go in? heard matt say on his broadcast when that happened, "i give up". should offensive struggles (at times) be such a surprise? majority of the time jess is going to get her points. hannah is proving herself on the offensive end. seeing some consistency from her. nicea continues to do some things really well, but, may be hitting a bit of a wall on the offensive end. but, really, anyone's guess is as good as another as to where the points are going to come from with this squad. i should mention, grace mitchell. i am impressed with her effort each time she enters the game. yeah, there are mistakes, but, she plays hard---i think we see maximum effort from her. would love to see her offensive game come around. time will tell---but, for playing out of position, she's doing pretty well. i am starting to really wonder if mitchell or simon should start and bring allie off the bench for a game or two and see how that goes. allie seemed to do well coming off the bench in the past. of course, different time, different team. idk, just thinking...

I re-watched the game and payed close attention to our defense when Michigan made three pointers. In almost every occasion it was when we were in a man defense, a Michigan player makes a drive towards the hoop and a defender would leave his man to help with the drive. Michigan, and previously Northwestern, would be able to kick it out to a three point shooter. Either he would be open and shoot it, or, one of our other defenders on the perimeter would have to leave his man to cover the shooter, and the shooter would swing it to that open man. The first defender who left his man is caught scrambling to close on the open shooter and get a hand up, but it's too late. If I were to ask Coach Miles, or better Molinari a question, I would ask if they ever consider just playing straight up man without the help, at least when teams are able to continually get wide open looks off of it. If they are coached to help on the dribble drive, it seems hard to expect them to do that and to also be able to get back out to their man before he can get a shot off. But maybe it's an execution thing. Perhaps basketballjones or Dean Smith could explain it for me.

  30. Some of the good parts.... Jess had a good game. More active overall and only had 2 turnovers. 9-10 free throws...so she did well today. Hannah also did well, ball handling was good, controlled the offense pretty well. She started out hot, then their defense started to concentrate and defend on her, and we had no response. Like has been said, we substituted and we seem to lose our flow.....not much bench scoring really hurt. Allie had a tough game. Also as said the numerous air balls was unusual for us, but that was symptomatic for us today. If you shoot 3 or 4 air balls, pass the ball to some one else. Hate to say it but we got out coached the second half. Plus our defense also disappeared the second half. Some of us need more work on basic basketball skills. Drive to the basket and shoot a lay up. Took a step backward somewhat today, but some parts of our game are actually better...but other teams are improving too.

Thought for sure this was a game she should dominate especially since she stood taller than any Illini player by 4 inches!! To only grab 2 rebounds and score 4 points is not going to get done! Good game from Hannah, Grace, Nicea and Jess Defense seems to be optional at various times of the game!

  35. I would 100 percent trust Fuller more for a defensive stop than I would Horne right now. And that's what we needed at the time.

    Coaching

Seriously? We're ragging on the coaching here? With Morrow healthy, we win both the last two games. Without a healthy Morrow, we don't. It's the Nebraska thing this year: both football and basketball. About the time you get something going, the injury bug with key players makes sure it doesn't happen.

  37. Fuller did some nice things. He is the player every program needs. He entered the game, and Wagner lost the ball out of bounds for a turnover. The next trip, he got matched up against Irvin, and stayed in front of him, allowing Watson to take the ball from him for an easy lay-up. 2 of his fouls were ridiculous. He never touched Irvin when he shot a mid-range jumper. He gained position on Wagner for a rebound and got called for a foul when Wagner flopped.
