  1. Yeah, Geno!!!! I like it!!!! And, while we're at it, let's go get Nick Saban to coach our football team. I mean, it'll take $$$$$$$$$$, but I'm sure he'll like our facilities. And this might sound kinda crazy, but do you think Phil Jackson might come out of retirement to coach our men's hoops team? That would be a trifecta!!! OMG!!! And I want Natalie Coughlin to come coach our swimmers -- primarily because she's smoking hawt. Might be tough to get her out of California, but maybe if we promised to hire Michael Phelps to be her assistant. I think we could gitter done. What do you guys think? You think I'm serious? I'm not.

Don't know if this has been said in other threads, if so, my apologies. Shavon's situation reminds me somewhat of when Hoppen went down in 1986. Other guys stepped it up and we still made it to the NCAA Tourney for the first time ever. I'm not predicting a spot in the Big Dance, but I can see players stepping up their games and the Huskers winning 4 or 5 of their remaining contests. I can see them winning tonight!

Badger fan here. Here's what I know. Koenig & Hayes are the experienced players. Koenig, the PG, has not played up to expectations, but he's capable of going off. Hayes is a borderline AA, but he's been doing a lot of his damage by getting to the line - he's changed his shot from last year and most of the year it was a work in progress, but it's starting to fall a bit more regularly - he's over 20 ppg during the last 5. Hayes will also play point forward for some stretches of the game, just because the offense works better when he's facilitator. The next best player is redshirt frosh big Ethan Happ. He is exclusively going to take his shots from near the rim - he's got some nice post moves and was able to score 25 against Indiana, abusing the more-heralded frosh Thomas Bryant. At one point (not sure if it's still true), he was leading the league in double-doubles, and even steals (!). He is, however, foul prone, and misses a lot of bunnies, too. Then we have role players. Vitto Brown has been playing well lately as a big who has a sweet stroke from mid-range, but he doesn't always take the smartest shots. Zak Showalter is the 5th starter at the off guard who is a former walkon whose dad coached him in HS and was a former player for Bo @ UW Platteville. Zak is all about energy - not the most skilled player, but he is athletic and draws a lot of charges. Gard has expanded the playing time of the bench quite a bit since he took over. Jordan Hill is a G who barely played at all for Bo, but is getting heavy minutes now - his job is to rest Koenig & Showalter, but he has shown the ability to do some nice things other than just don't screw up (which he does do with ill-advised passes and dribbling into traps). Khalil Iverson (true frosh) is more of a combo guard-forward that has been good especially defensively - he's also going to try to dunk multiple times, whether it's open or not. Alex Illikainen (true frosh) is more the prototypical Wisconsin big who shoots 3s - his body needs some maturing before he can truly bang in the B1G, though. Charlie Thomas, another true frosh, is a big whose body is ready, but not his skills. The last guy who might play is Aaron Moesch, a walkon who's been with the program the last couple of years - Gard plays him because he knows what the offense is supposed to do - he is the epitome of a just don't screw it up guy as he really hardly ever touches the ball, but he sets screens and draws his man away from the action. Aside from the more liberal use of the bench, Gard has brought back "the swing" offense. Bo really had gone away from the swing the last couple of years to better take advantage of the likes of Kaminsky & Dekker. It has guards who post up down low and bigs who take outside shots and most teams have issues dealing with it because guards don't know how to defend post-ups and bigs like to defend closer to the basket. On defense, here's an interesting stat - UW is 14th in the B1G in defensive 3P%. But they are #1 for fewest 3PA allowed. Their strategy has always been to make you shoot difficult twos. All this being said, UW is not a great team. They go for long stretches without a FG pretty much every game. Against Illinois, they were 2-14 from 3 and some of those misses were wide-open, nobody within 10 feet types. So, OSU decided they were going to force UW out of the lane, and UW went 13-27 from 3. Go figure. They also have this habit of letting teams stay within striking distance as the game winds down - this is how they ended up losing to the likes of Western Illinois and Milwaukee, and making games interesting that shouldn't be. Anyway, that's what I know.

  7. Count me as amazed with the second paragraph of this post and the two before it, including this from Red Steve's post: "This can even go up to the UNL's AD level, and how much emphasis they want to put on women's bball. Do they want more from the sport? Or do they want to have a midpack team, that can get to the NCAAs....some years?" I am absolutely dumb founded that this would even be a topic of discussion. First of all, is there any evidence that women's basketball is not a high priority in our athletic department? Let's see, we have great facilities, they pay the coach $700k a year, we fund the program at a high level. What shows it isn't a high priority? Other than not offering $20 million to hire Geno Auriema I don't know what it would be. Women's bball is one of the school's most successful programs in the last decade (other than volleyball, bowling, and perhaps track nothing is better), and I'm pretty sure it is a priority and isn't getting fewer resources than our competitors. I realize no one said "fire Yori", but to even mention it is bizarre. We sure haven't been a "middle of the pack team" in recent years. I saw it earlier on here this season; people had unrealistically high expectations. And now when we have had some struggles, we have an overreaction the other way. Did anyone think that this wouldn't be somewhat of a rebuilding year, after losing 4 starters with over 400 starts? To be where we are with those losses, plus our best player being about 75% for most of the season and our freshman stud coming off of knee surgery, is quite good, actually. Perspective: 1. In Yori's 13 full seasons, we have 11 post season appearances. 7 NCAA tournaments. The men's team had 1 NCAA tournament during that time. 2. A conference regular season title (none since a shared one in 1947 for the men) and a conference title. 2 Sweet 16s. Seven 20 win seasons, and we're on track for 8. 4 straight NCAA tournament appearances. 3. Attendance has been top 25 nationally the last 6 years. 4. 100% graduation rate. Excellent in academic performance and citizenship. 5. The best years of the 14 have been over the past 6 (a reverse of the Oregon State record of our football coach). One of the best freshman in the country plays for NU. We're 16-7 and in the upper division of the conference in a rebuilding year. For that to be a major concern shows how good it has been. All categories one could look at reflect excellence--on the court success, academics, attendance. I completely don't get it.

  8. Like HB says, I'm surprised this thread even exists. I'm more than happy with Coach Yori; And her recruiting. Here is something from the recent game page (more than you want to know ) that caught my attention: Coach Yori's record speaks for itself. I know we are all disappointed in the WBB results so far this year, given the excellent prospects at the beginning of the season. But HB (and several others) make many good points of it being a rebuilding year after losing 4 starters. That combined with injuries ,and some key players not being 100%, contribute to our poor play at times, and propensity to turn the ball over and make poor passes. Getting back to the premise of the original posters, the future of Nebrasketball looks bright. I like our chances! .

  9. Nebraska Cornhuskers (13-11) at Wisconsin Badgers (14-9) Date: Wednesday, Feb 10th, 2016 Time: 6:00 p.m. CST Arena: Kohl Center Capacity: 17,249 Broadcast Information Television: BTN Online: BTN2GO Satellite Radio: Sirius (Ch. 83); XM (195) Play-by-play: Kent Pavelka Expert Analysis: Matt Davison Wisconsin Scouting Thread Wisconsin Info Head Coach: Greg Gard Location: Madison, WI Conference: B1G 10 Nickname: Badgers Last time out: Beat Ohio St Typical Rotation Depth: 7-8 players Line: Wisconsin by -8 Tempo: Ssssllloowwww down Offensive Style: "Wisconsin Swing" Defense Style: "More aggressive in the passing lanes, less aggressive on the defensive boards than a Bo Ryan defense Fun Fact : You must pay your taxes and you're not immortal even though Bo Ryan is no longer the coach Player to watch: Ethan Happ The 6'9" Redshirt freshman is THE constant post threat the Huskers need to worry about as over 85% of his looks are coming in the paint where he's scoring in double digits to go with 8+ rebounds a game. Miles Pregame Presser Watson Pregame Presser The Skinny You can tell from Miles' presser that the overall game plan and rotation won't change drastically against Wisconsin with Jack McVeigh slotting in for Shavon and Nick Fuller the next forward off the bench. Against a Wisconsin team that rolls a lot of game with three 6'8"+ players and guards that post you up, rolling with a smaller lineup doesn't seem like a great idea. Things have changed a bit under long-time Bo Ryan assistant Greg Gard. Besides bringing back the swing offense, Gard has this Badger squad a lot more aggressive on defense, giving up defensive rebounds in the pursuit of steals. Heck, the Badgers lead the league in steal % and turnover % which is remarkable given they been among the lowest for over a decade. This team also isn't shooting a ton of 3s though that's probably more of a talent than style issue as the Badgers are shooting under 35% for the year. The biggest problem tonight for Nebraska, besides replace on the B1G leading scores/heart of their team, is that Wisconsin draws a ton of contact. Nebraska will foul the heck out of teams that don't make it to the line so it's not out of the realm of possibilities we could see 40+ attempts from the Badgers tonight. A hot shooting night could keep Nebraska in this game but I don't know how a team that has been hacking people for the entire Tim Miles era is going to just stop tonight on the road. I hope Shavon hasn't played his last game as a Husker, as he is one of my all-time favorites, but if it's in his best interest to miss the rest of the season then that is what needs to be done. In the end basketball is just a game and his personal health and safety is more important.

  12. It says to pay and get a rivals membershipPlease neither request nor post paid content on this site.Ummmm.....is it not okay to summarize or post take aways from these articles anymore? When did this change? I've always been aware that it's never okay to post quotes and obviously not okay to post segments of the writing, but what did I do wrong I guess?Maybe it was a bit too close? Robin hit me up about it. I don't have a Rivals account so I don't really know.Ok more clarification. Should we never post even the summaries to these articles? Basically never share information that comes from the pay sites? There's not too many ways to say "recruit is visiting schools A, B, and C' or 'recruit is down to schools A and B and will decide by such and such date'. I think your post wouldn't have prompted Robin to hit me up if it wouldn't have been responding to a "can you post what Rivals" said sort of deal because it did seem like a paraphrase vs a quote. Ok thanks. Are we at 20 pages yet?

  13. The NU Women's BB program is in excellent hands with Coach Yori! Are we going to compete with Maryland and OSU for the top athletes? Probably not. But NU has a great anchor to build around for the next 3 years. Next class is bringing in the wings and guards necessary to push NU forward. Injuries and defections have cost this team more than any other issue. Connie is going to recruit girls to fit her program and anyone can see that ideally NU plays a fun, uptempo, fan friendly style. Most of the other NU programs need to "catch up" to the success of Women's BB under Coach Yori! She is a bargain.

This was the biggest piece of info for me as I also haven't watched a ton of Wisky this year. Miles hit on this yesterday in his presser as well as Gard developing the bench more. In some ways our lack of a traditional post will allow us to be able to guard the Wisky big men on the perimeter. How have you guys handled zone this year? In past years, when a team played zone against UW, UW would nearly always become even more efficient offensively. This year is not like previous years, however. We just are a normal team efficiency-wise, and zones seem to force us to use even more of the shot clock than we normally do. We also don't have deadly 3-point marksmen, but they're also not completely incapable of that. It's a mixed bag, though, because I do think our offensive rebounding is better against zones - we killed Syracuse on the boards and they play exclusively zone.

I don't agree with anyone that thinks that it is a bigger game for Wisconsin. If the goal is to make the NCAA tournament, I think it is more of a must win for us than it is for them. Until we cannot get an at large bid, that will always remain my goal. That being said, it is somewhat hard for me to envision us winning in Madison without Shields. Just cannot seem to get a clear picture in my mind of how that will happen. An extraordinary game by White is probably the path. And Webster is going to probably have to play great. Mcveigh is going to have to get it done more than he has of late, especially on the glass. Those three things probably all need to happen.

    Wisky pregame

Wisconsin hired the first black head coach in the Big 10 (actually 10 teams back then) of any sport in the early-mid '70s - Bill Cofield. I attended one of his summer basketball camps as a kid where he had his assistants do most of the instruction. I happened to be in the group of kids coached by none other than a young Bo Ryan. He even slept in a room at the dorm as a kind of camp counselor. Anyway, the unis are from the Cofield era. Apparently, Adidas only shipped the red jerseys, so that's why they're wearing the reds at home. Also, on a tangential note - there was a game about 10 years ago at Illinois where the Illini wore their orange unis and the Badgers wore their red road ones. It was very confusing to watch.

    What if...

It looks like Wisconsin went small against a smaller Illinois squad because of this. Badger fan here - that might have been part of it, but Brown was questionable to play at all vs. Illinois because of an "upper body injury". He came in and played and made some key plays, but from what we had been led to believe, he was supposed to be limited availability. That was the only game all year that the starting five was different.

Next year we need to be in the top six within our conference and take care of our preseason opponents. We can probably afford three losses in the preseason, depending upon who those losses are to. If we do that, we will be in the dance.

  26. I think in Arop (committed), Chang (offered) and Wingett we have three really good kids who would like to play at Nebraska. Chang and Arop seem to be really good friends off the court. Chang tweeted a picture of them eating together after the South, Papio game. The state tournament will be really good this year with those three and they'll be back next year. Pretty exciting time for prep hoops in Nebraska, I think.
