uneblinstu's post game chatter: ed 6, vol 11: Arkansas St.

      BbekSE6CMAEp6cR.jpg

Had other obligations this evening which prevented me from attending this one. Wierd watching a home game on TV. Here are my real time thoughts.

      - Fast start was nice. Hot shooting from Pitchford and Gallegos. Nice 15-2 run to start.

      - Played with great energy and focus, clear they wanted to put the Creighton game behind them as quickly as possible.

      - Still liking the 3 a little too much early. I'm guessing Miles mentioned that during the first media time out because the started attacking more after that.

    - Nice to see Hawkins get on the board.

    - The block by Biggs was sweet.

    - Arkansas St. was ice cold. NU defense was pretty good, active, but they really had a tough day shooting.

    - When Biggs can get into the lane, he's so difficult to defend.

    - Man, we had some young lineups on the floor today.

    - Nice to see Rivers get back in there. Not sure he played that great, though.

    - Van Slyke had a nice game.

    - Huskers didn't do this. Miles called the time out and chewed them out (I assume) and they got things fixed.

    - Good to see Shields get back into rhythm, basically since halftime of last Sunday.

    - NU is going to struggle in the post, we are expecting this, but they've got enough everywhere else, they should be able to stay in a bunch of games. I'm a little concerned they have to be reminded to play well and what the game plan is seemingly every half, but when they're attacking they're a very good basketball team.

    - This was one of the better transition games I've seen NU play in a while.

    - Couple of really nifty assists from Webster. When he gets comfortable scoring at this level, look out.

    - Biggs makes some iffy decisions on his drives sometimes. Dribbled right into a triple team at least twice.

    - There must have been something building, because I didn't see enough for a technical on Petteway.

    - Webster still playing a little fast at times.

    - Huskers couldn't bury ASU, not dissimilar from what happened in Omaha on Sunday.

Well, yes and no. They did build a 28 point lead and every time ASU tried to make a run, they'd get five or six quick points to squelch any comeback.  ASU never really threatened.  It was similar to what Creighton did on Sunday.

I can't remember who said it on here this week so I can't give credit, but it was mentioned that whenever Pitchford hits that first 3, the team seems to start fast, and it worked again today - twice  :)  So whoever typed that is a genius!  ;)

Right now NU is night and day playing defense at home vs away from home - not too surprising with a young team. Of course the level of competition has been tougher away from home, but NU has been doing a pretty solid job holding teams well under their averages at PBA.

Nitpicking but we are taking too many fairly long two point shots for my taste.  That is what we need to avoid doing and try to make them do.  I much prefer taking open 3's or attacking the rim.

Still trying to figure out the technicals.  Couldn't figure it out while at the game, will watch a replay (right now) and will see what "really" happened.

When this team goes uptempo, they are really, really fun to watch.

Here is something I did not expect to see... Currently the Big Red is sitting at 9th in the Big 10 at 7-3... is the Big 10 down this year??  did not have a very good showing today

Benny has done a great job this year and just provides a spark coming off the bench! I thought he did a great job today!

So has Leslie Smith.  They would be my surprise players of the year so far, both have been very productive when on the floor

Biggs received one for saying something to a guy who fouled him within ear shot of the ref.  The one with Petteway was him being elbowed after a free throw attempt and then him retaliating.  That's why both players received technicals.

    Lots of technicals this year.

I think Terran's technical was questionable.  He shouldn't have retaliated, but it's not like he shoved the guy to the ground.  Hard to tell from the angles on the boobtube, but the elbow he took looked much worse.  I think a double technical was fair.

Biggs...why.  The ref was right there!  You just gave handed the guy the ball.  If you're going to run your mouth at least know when to do it.

Also- failing to get the rebound on missed free throws REALLY hurt.  There were at least two times in the second half where they missed the rebound and ASU got points off of it.  One of those times we fouled them on the put back giving them a quick 4 points.

OK, I get trying to keep inflammatory speech off the court and make it a more gentle sport more like a cricket match. If that is the goal then why doesn't the NCAA pass a rule against foulmouthed coaches? Brady would have gotten teed up plenty in that case according to my lip reading skills.

Low post defense is a problem. Give Van Slyke credit for being a good player, but we made him look like an All-American. How many "All-Americans" centers will we play this year?

I'm happy to say that I didn't really have a problem with any of the shots taken. Tai forced a couple but he was trying to get it going and I don't really fault him for that. Other than that, I didn't see indications of selfish play. Some mistakes in shot selection by various players but mostly while in attack mode trying to be aggressive and I think most coaches can live with a little of that.

Biggs lived up to his rep of turning the ball over while trying to make the spectacular pass. But give him credit for being unselfish.

Big applause for Rivers getting into the game, but he proceded to show why Miles hasn't been giving him minutes.

They put the Creighton loss behind them right off the bat. Showing some resilience, which was very good to see.

Overall, liked what I saw, with a couple of exceptions.

The technicals are a problem if they continue...it is the discipline issue that we visited about a couple of weeks ago.  I do not want to overstate the issue, but it is a continuing issue.  You have to learn to turn the other cheek so to speak.  There is a line that cannot be crossed.  If it is crossed at the wrong time, it may cost us a game.

I thought shot selection was fine.  I did see a couple of moves to the basket where the shot taken was...well, okay it was just Walter's, what the heck was that???  Did anyone catch the crowd as the game went on and Petteway was heading to the basket...the crowd noise went up significantly in anticipation of the dunk...now that is special.

Anyone still questioning why Hawkins is not redshirting???

Unless we double team the post, we are going to struggle with interior defense all year.  Try as he might, Walter does not have the strength to stop that interior game.  It is pick your poison...I thought Coach Miles was doing their darndest to stop the exterior game of Ark State...and they did that very well.

Speaking of interior shots...we once again missed a lot of chip shots.  If we ever get those to fall, we will be looking good.

I think it's just the fact that a lot of big ten teams are going through quite a bit of turnover and a lot of them play very tough non conference schedules.  It's hard to say it's "down," but it's certainly not as strong as last year (last year was an incredible year for the big 10 though).
