uneblinstu's post game chatter: ed 5, vol 18 - Penn St.

      - Good to see Brandon back.

      - Got off to a bit of a slow start, getting down 7-0

      - Huskers responded well from there, made a quick 10-0 run to get right back in the game.

      - Both teams struggle on the interior. NU having some success, though. This game is basically a statlemate on the glass.

      - Ray with some early success is good for NU, we'll see if he can carry that through the 2nd half.

      - Shields gets better by the day. Fun to watch him develop. 29 points was the most from a Husker freshman since Tyronn Lue eclipsed the 30 mark in 1996

      - I hate the stupid bail out foul they called on Rivers in the corner that gave Penn St. the three free throws. You'd like to think the refs have more discernment than that. Then again, it was Tom O'Neill...

      - NU controlled the first few minutes of the 2nd half. Couple of quick threes by PSU and it's a game again.

      - Zone defense giving NU fits.

      - Shields hitting some big boy shots for NU.

      - Tyrance didn't see much time today, but that foul on the three was big.

    - NU's propensity to give up offensive rebounds is disturbing.

    - NU's response after Penn St. went on their run to take the lead was really encouraging.

    - I'm not sure what the refs were looking at that flagrant foul on Ubel. I saw it similarly to how Sam McKewon saw it.

    - Saw a lot of tweets like this one after Penn St. couldn't hit a free throw at the end:

-All in all, a win is a win. NU fought through some adversity and made plays down the stretch and Penn St. didn't. There's some mental toughness on this team that hasn't necessarilly been there in the past. The depth is going to keep them from winning many more games, but there's a lot to like from who is on the roster right now.

It was a nice win against another challenged team.  This was nice from a couple different perspectives.  One, we learned how to win (despite events working against you) and, (2) we had players step up.  Nice to see.

    - I think Andre has now been provided a role as part of a two man rotation at the post.  Brandon will get the majority of the minutes.  We will simply need Andre to play hard those minutes he does get.

    - Very proud of Brandon.  He had a good first game back from a broken elbow.  We need him and he makes a nice difference when he is on the floor.

    - Rivers played a nice role.  He is not going to get the headlines, but he does really well on defense, and had some timely rebounds and shots.

    - Ray hit some big shots, played good defense and had a nice overall game.  I would like to see him become more consistent, but he sure is fun to watch when he is on.

    - Talley had a nice game...very few TO's - much less dribbling - some timely rebounds and shots.  Also played good defense.

    - Benny played much better today.  He was a defensive spart and caused problems for PSU...nice to see.

    - Shavon -- wow!

Talley also added 6 Ast. with 1 TO's.  Very good game on that hand.  Even though he needs to hit shots, he found the hot guys and allowed them to hit shots.

16 for 16 from the free throw line was the biggest stat in the game, if we don't get to the line very often we need to hit everyone of them which we did today.

I definitely thought Benny played pretty well today, and when he gets moving in the fast break, he is a hard player to guard. He also played pretty good defense.  Hope this builds his confidence a bit going forward, because it looked shot after Purdue

Benny'll be fine. Right now I'm looking at him as a backup point with maybe a defensive specialty and the occasional bomb. Those guys have value on a D1 roster. A lot to learn running a team on the floor in a top flight BCS conference. Unless someone's super talented, that takes time.

I thought the flagrant foul was the correct call, I thought Brandon's elbow caught the PSU player above the shoulders. But my case was if the Ref would have called the foul on PSU when they trapped Ubel it would have never led to the elbow swing. (If you could call that an "elbow swing")

I thought Benny bounced back a little today. I agree with TCP's assessment of Benny, but I think he just needs to get his confidence back. He's shown he can hit the pull up mid-range jumper.

Shavon Shields what can I say that already hasn't been said, played phenomenal

I like what I'm seeing from David Rivers lately as well, finally figured out where he can get his shots in this offense, and playing good defense, like the future combo of him and Shavon.

Talley and Ray played well, I think it's good that Shavon and others have picked up there games lately, I don't think they feel like they have to carry the team so much.

Ubel put in some good minutes today, and felt his leadership is what we were missing against Purdue.

Not encouraged with Almeida at all, we play so much better when he's not on the floor.

    And Finally........ BALL DON'T LIE!!!!

both can't be true.  Either it was the right call, or the ball don't lie, if the ball don't lie, then, in theory, the FT's would have gone in.

Penn St is one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the NCAA.

With Ubel back, Tyrance will have to be quite consistent to play.

Bouncing passes off walls isn't exactly consistent
