uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 9, Ed 4 - Dayton

      CyE8qdGWQAArG7Q.jpg

    - Great, great start for NU, 17-5, I think.

    - Energy and execution waned after the front line came out.

    - Gill ran the point a bit there. Might be a decent way to him going a bit.

    - Thought Watson tried to do too much a bit when the second line was in. Forced a couple bad shots.

    - Huskers owned the paint. Guess I didn't expect that. I like it, though.

    - Jordy had a couple chances to secure some loose balls and couldn't do it. Helped fuel the Dayton run a bit.

    - Really good on the boards.

    - Gill heating up! 8 points in the first half!

    - Seems like for as much as NU drives the ball, seems like they should draw more fouls than they do. That seems to happen a lot for NU teams. Is there something they're not doing to draw fouls?

    - Big finish for NU to the half, capped with a big 3 from McVeigh.

    - I agree with whomever it was on the call, that Watson needs to do a better job of getting to the line. That's how he takes his game to the next level, which is already pretty high.

    - 2 turnovers on inbound plays.

    - NU did a nice job keeping Dayton at arms length most of the 2nd half.

    - Dayton missed two free throws that Dayton got offensive boards on. Flyers got points on both: a 3 and a tip in.

    - Watson is a gamer.

    - NU did a bunch of things to try and let Dayton back in the game, but also made some big plays down the stretch.

    - Morrow got a lot of love for his play tonight. Deservedly so. Big time game for the sophomore. Love watching him play right now.

    - Really, really rough stretch at the end by McVeigh to give Dayton the lead. That game was more stressful than it needed to be.

    - That was a big win for a number of reasons. Won it with your senior leader on the bench in the final seconds, beat a pretty solid team. Get a shot at a blue blood tomorrow.

Uhh not only did the announcers during the game say we might possibly be an NCAA tourney team, but the ESPN recap also says the same thing. Are we...earning some respect??

dayton is a solid program, but we have a long ways to go. I think we're starting to see the results of signing multiple top 150 players.

Without a doubt. Lots of tough games left to prove if we are for real or not. Just shocked to see a little bit of tourney talk after one solid win.

The announcers were basically salivating over Morrow. Plus they had a lot of good things to say about Watson and Webster. It's nice to hear that stuff and it not be the "every team is great and has amazing players" kinda talk they do with losing teams like us. Guess it helps when ya win

Good win for us. That last minute was almsot disastrous. Our offense looks amazing when they set it up and don't rush. Fouling on defense was a concern. Plus it seemed like we gave up a lot of Off Reb.

Overall I'm glad we got the win can't wait to play UCLA (Portland???) tomorrow.

I think one major difference in this years team from last years that i noticed in this game is not only the ball movement, but teams also have to respect the PGs shooting ability. With Benny it was basically 4 on 5, so the driving lanes were much smaller. This year teams have to respect Glynns jumper. Also, im not saying Shavon was a black hole because he wasnt, but at times he would really force shots. I dont think well see that as much this year and it should definitely be a benefit.

    OK, you 2 convinced me.

Can you recommend a good red glasses remover?

I agree that the calls were going Daytons way, more often. Not so much late in the game but during the first half it seemed like they could just run into us and get a call. That was also reflected in the free throws if I remember correctly it was 12 for us 22 for them before they purposely fouled us at the end of the game. But obviously there are factors besides the refs that could have caused that.

Yes. We finally have a team full of smart, capable players. It's been awhile since we had a team that wasn't  handicapped in certain area(s). We seem to have guys who play smart and share the ball well. We have multiple guys who are capable of carrying the load offensively, when needed, but none who appear like they have to be the guy (forcing things). I like this team.

Think this is the best TEAM we have had in a looooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg time.

More guys doing more things, have to stop a couple of us.

After our young'ns get  more up to speed and can play longer at more important times and we will be somebody that no body will want to play.

Loved the game.  Led the whole way.  Lost the 14 point lead, didn't wilt, extended it again.  Glynn came back strong after a very rough outing Sunday night.  Loved that resiliency, and I expect it out of Jack as well.

Disappointed in the Californians For Nebraska.  Get some people to the game.  Holiday is no excuse.  Home game for Dayton.

Giggly giddy.  this was an ncaa team and our team of freshmen and sophomores just took it to them.  daytons guards will give a ton of teams nightmares.   they're the classic guard heavy team with experience that will be a nightmare matchup in march.

Sure we almost gave it away but growing pains happen.   and that's exactly why this is so exciting  -- dayton clawed its way back like experienced teams should.  we bent like young teams do.

And we fought back repeatedly and didn't break.  and won.

First time in literal years you can see a light and LOUD horn of a train coming down the tunnel.

Jack is one of our better free throw shooters.  I believe he was placed in the position so that if a foul was given, he would be one of our preferred free throw shooters.  It should not be expected that he would melt down handling the ball.

fair enough, and thanks for the correction. I generally don't like bigs getting inbounds under pressure unless they're hella quick passers, too.

Maybe they will want to play us to up their strength of schedule.

    Some concerns:

Tai can't foul out at the end of games. We needed him in that final minute.

    GW forced some shots up.

Out rebounded by a smaller team.

    Some good:

Good piece of coaching by TM. He called a few well timed timeouts.

    EM came up huge.

Jacobson was really active on defense.

Gill broke out of his slump.

We may have bent at the end but we didn't break.

JT gave us some good minutes.

Were able to close out the game with Tai on the bench.

I expect us to be fairly competitive with UCLA through the first half before they pull away late in the game.

We really only had two main scoring options last year. Right now it looks like we have four. I know everyone likes to see the freshmen play, but I like how we're limiting their minutes. Smaller rotation = more solid play.

Glynn had 20 points on 6-10 shooting. I used to worry about some of the shots that he forces up, but many of them go in, and on this particular night, 2 points per FG attempt is outstanding.

Beyond outstanding.  he was facing head to head some top line guards and he was awesome.

This game is the result of Miles not lowering the bar on his recruiting over the years.  The standard of athleticism is set and, despite our youth, we have a complete roster that can match up with just about anyone.  While we might not have any NBA-ready players, we don't really have any weaknesses at any position.  We whooped Dayton's ass for most of the game because we had superior athletes and decent depth.  Same with La Tech.  This is why I've advocated for Miles to get two more years after this season.  He has completely changed the standard of athlete acceptable to put on a Nebraska jersey.  Great, great win.

UCLA will be extremely tough.  They have one of the best half court offenses I've seen in years.  Super skilled bigs.  Incredible true frosh at PG, and a great senior leader at SG.  We can outrun them though.  They are very Wisconsin-esque.

i'll defer to people who watched this on tv, but I have no idea why we were trying to get the ball into mcveigh at all under pressure, unless there were absolutely no other options.

that was a nuclear cluster for about 45 seconds there. and I feel for him, because it was probably not a situation he should've been in.

Prior to that meltdown McVeigh had a contentious interchange with the Dayton players and I believe this played a part in his semi-meltdown at the end.  If that's the case, no harm done this time and hopefully he learns from it moving forward

I love the scoring options from this team.

    Webster 17 PPG

    Watson 12 PPG

    McVeigh 12 PPG

    Morrow 12 PPG

Plus throw in Jacobson and Gill who will both have a few double digit scoring games I'm sure.

    I like all those options.

I watched the entire Dayton game at Alabama a week ago.  They have a reputation for being a great defensive team.  And they were in that Alabama game, which led them to a nice road win over the Avery Johnson coached club.  Their rotations were good.  I thought we were going to struggle to score.

Wow, was I wrong.  Our flow and spacing gave them all kinds of problems.  Driving angles were there all night.  It is very encouraging to see our offense function against a good defensive team that has a good shot to be in the NCAA tournament.

I watched the NU produced highlights and they had a shot of the last ditch play by Dayton that Morrow disrupted. The angle the shot had was from the floor on the NU end. What I didn't catch on the broadcast was that the ball fell to the Dayton player who tried to turn and get a shot off. Not sure if he would have, but Glynn was right there to block it to prevent it. Was a really athletic play I completely missed on the broadcast.
