12/22/2012 - Central Michigan Report Card

      Welcome to El Paso

*** NOTE *** THIS REPORT CARD WILL NOT BE AS IN DEPTH AS OTHERS, AS I DID NOT GET A CHANCE TO ACTUALLY PHYSICALLY SEE THE GAME.

      OFFENSE: A+

89 points, 57% from the field (including 63% in the first half!!!) and 22 free throw attempts - if Nebraska were testing based on tonight's offensive performance, they'd test "gifted!"

Really, tonight's result was a big surprise, based on the fact that NU got only 17 of those 89 points out of Ubel (14) and Almeida (3).

HUGE Player of the Game honors go to Mr. David Rivers, who continues to improve and impress. The sophomore finished with 20 points and 7 rebounds, and Shavon Shields had a nice 6 and 7, respectively, too.

    DEFENSE: B-

Nebraska did allow 75 points, but on only 42% shooting.

However, allowing THIRTY THREE foul shot attempts was not good at all.

With the higher number of possessions than normal in this one, you'd have to think Nebraska did on the lower end of "good" defensively (again, hard to tell without seeing the game).

    REBOUNDING: B

Nebraska held a clear size advantage down low, though Andre Almeida hardly saw the floor (9 minutes, including zero in the second half). Coach Miles made it sound as if this was because of matchups and not injury, so 'Dre oughta be ready to play tomorrow against UTEP.

Nebraska out rebounded UTEP by five (33 to 28) and each team had seven offensive boards.

    BALL HANDLING: C-

15 turnovers are too many but again, with the increased amount of possessions and the pace of this game, you can live with it when Nebraska was still able to convert on 89 points offensively!

    COACHING: A

Nebraska rebounded very nicely against a capable basketball team out of the MAC.

The Huskers were able to get to the free throw line even despite limited presence for the majority of the contest out of Ubel and Almeida. Nebraska also scored nearly 90 points and won a game comfortably away from the Devaney Center - that's ALWAYS a good thing.

But most of all, I give Coach Miles an "A" tonight because of the continued improvements out of Rivers and Shields. Both players seem to be taking two steps forward the majority of the time more than two steps back.

    OVERALL GRADE: A-

A really nice win for Nebraska tonight. They responded to three disappointing games in a row by largely winning this game in a going away fashion. Sure, they were never totally "pulled away" but it never certainly felt as if this game would ever be in question. That's a better game than probably any of us could have predicted - agree?

PLAYER OF THE GAME: DAVID RIVERS

2012-2013 PLAYER OF THE GAME RESULTS:

    RAY GALLEGOS - 4

    DYLAN TALLEY - 3

    BRANDON UBEL - 2

    DAVID RIVERS - 1

    SHAVON SHIELDS - 1

These three points were my major concerns after the game was over.

    1) We outscored the Chips, but there won't be too many teams for the rest of the season where we can outplay them on offense.

    2) There were way too many fouls during this game. Regardless of the officials, we need to adapt to the officiating.

    3) We need to control the ball better. We gave away the ball way too much.

If you give up as many points, fouls, and turnovers as we did tonight and don't back that up with a strong offense, we lose every time.
