Early predictions for a likely starting lineup next year are shaping up like:

PG  6'2"  Tarin Smith (or Glyn Watson if he's all that)

    SG  6'6"  Terran Petteway

    SF  6'7"  Andrew White III

    PF  6'8"  Shavon Shields

    C  6'11"  Walter Pitchford

That's a lineup with some decent size and potentially some pretty excellent offensive firepower, but still might have rebounding issues.

agree. if petteway leaves then ed morrow may start.

it's probably about 50/50 that petteway leaves. I don't think he's a 1st rounder, but he might feel that he's ready for the next level and want to leave.

I think whether or not he goes may depend a lot on how this year finishes out.  If they don't pick it up and make a run back to the tourney I can see Petteway wanting to come back for his last year to try to get back there and achieve what I've heard many of the players on this team say is getting NU it's first NCAA win.  He hasn't (yet) had a year that's made me feel like he's advanced that much from last year or that his draft stock would be any better than it was last year.

Hope NU can add a quality starting rebounder to the team so that Pitch can provide spurtability off the bench to pack an offensive punch similar to what Benny can provide defensively. Maybe that's a bulked-up Ed Morrow Jr. ((shrugs))

If Walt put in the work, he could become a B1G-quality post.  But rebounding is about personality and mentality and Walter hasn't shown he has the kind of mindset to be a great rebounder or defensive presence in the post.  He's shown glimmers of offensive low-post ability, which would go splendidly well with his proven perimeter shooting ability.

The piece I'd say we're most lacking from that lineup is the defensive presence who rebounds and blocks shots and keeps the opposing big from having a career scoring night inside.  I don't see Walt becoming that guy, but one never knows.

If there was an unscheduled departure (and I'm not hoping nor pushing for it) that would be the element we most need to add.  But finding big men who can come in and be really good big men right away are few and far between and usually commit to places like Duke or Kentucky.

I think we better get used to the idea that Walt is going to be our big man next year and just hope that he gets the job done.  Because, otherwise, this team is fairly loaded for a Husker team.

As of this moment we have Rivers, Menke, Kurkowski, Moses and Leslee leaving us and Jacobson, McVeigh, White, Morrow, Trueblood and Watson joining us.  I am still hoping and praying for a big man, somehow...to fall into our lap.

Jacobson is putting up some good numbers also and McVeigh is reportedly a three ball launcher.

So, if say half of the new guys pan out at all, we should have a pretty salty bunch moving forward.

This year, we're missing two elements: that defensive low-post presence; and a guy who can stroke it from deep.

With the addition of White as the guy who can stroke it, it appears about the only thing we'd be missing next year is a dominating big.  I suspect Walt is our best chance of having that guy next year if he commits himself to developing his post skills.  Talented and athletic big men who would be immediately eligible next year don't grow on trees and I'd be surprised if we find one hiding anywhere nearby.

Meanwhile, let's hypothetically put the outgoers up against the incomers:

    Leslee      vs.    White

    Moses              Jacobson

    Rivers             Morrow

                       Watson

                       McVeigh

    Yeah, hmmmm.

Morrow won't be up to game speed right away.  His upside is almost certainly better than Rivers but that's down the road.  Will he be as good the moment he steps on the playing floor next November?  Could be close but probably not quite.  Experience counts for something.

Leslee and Moses each fill an important role that none of the newcomers provide.  On the other hand, White and McVeigh provide something that no one on the current roster gives us.  Do those losses/gains cancel each other out?  I dunno.  We got along fairly unsuccessfully without Leslee and Moses for a several game stretch this year so it hurts to lose them knowing there's really not anyone to replace what they bring.  And, honestly, I'd prefer an upgrade over the two of them anyway.  If Moses had Leslee's hands and hand-eye coordination, we'd have something.  Can Hammond be ready for the big time by next November?  He's our best bet to back up Walt in the post.  And I don't know the answer to that.

Jacobson and Watson are almost gravy.  They just add to something we're not in need of replacing.  Total net gain with no loss to balance against.

We'll see how Miles fits the pieces together.  Morrow may provide a portion of what we're losing in Leslee and Moses.  Hammond might improve enough to get some legitimate minutes in the post.  But White is definitely going to see the floor and score some points so, probably overall, a pretty big net gain from him alone.  Add in potential big impact from a couple of the other guys and I think we'll be pretty salty.  A beast of a big, though, and we'd ben downright dangerous.

I know our post defense can be problematic but I think it is Miles ahead of our post offense which at this point is nonexistant.

If Morrow could grow to 6'9 and add a lot of weight (at least 230), he could play center. good chance that doesn't happen. Wonder if we will try to have be like kentucky with two tall guys in the backcourt?

    PG: Terran Petteway (6'6)

    SG: Andrew White III (6'7)

    SF: Shavon Shields (6'7)

    PF: Ed Morrow (6'8)

    C: Pitchford (6'10)

i think this is more realistic:

    PG: Watson or Tarin Smith

    SG: Petteway

    SF: White

    PF: Shields

    C: Pitchford

Norm, I gotta disagree with hour take on Watson.  We need big minutes by a guard who can play the 1 and 2.  I think he indeed can add something we "are in need of replacing".

Little off track but I think our best team next year is going to be Petteway Shields White Pitchford and ?.  And Miles is going to have so many ways to go based on the situation.  I think that team is long and athletic enought to allow for Watson or Smith to play in it.  And we can go to Morrow if need be for boardwork.  And Parker if defensive spark needed.  But the core is in good shape if Petteway comes back.  Will be well equipped to switch ball screens with waves of good athletes.  Now lets figure out this year.

White is definitely the guy out of our 5 newcomers that is a lock to see the floor for significant minutes immediately.

No, no, what I'm saying is he doesn't offset one of the guys who is leaving.   Like Morrow might offset the loss of Rivers.  There's nothing that we're losing that corresponds to the gain of Watson, so it's a 100% net gain to add him.  That's what I tried to say, anyway.

Ok, it sounds like you meant "in need of replacing by a departing player", vs. one who is now playing but is, to be polite, limited.  I am just hopeful Watson is an immediate, noticeable upgrade.
