02/16/2013 - Michigan State Report Card

      Tim Miles and Matt Davison

      OFFENSE: B

I thought Nebraska was good the majority of the night even though they didn't convert on as many shots as were needed.

Obviously, the second half (40 points) was better than the first (24 points) but I still say good because rarely in this game did NU get down to 5 or 6 seconds on the shot clock and throw up desperation shots as they've done so many times this season. And how about that for a run on sentence?!?! Proud of myself on that one.

Seriously though, outside of a couple Dylan Talley shots that were blocked (and not particularly good attempts) the Huskers rarely found themselves in the precarious position of heaving up shots at the end of a shot clock.

Andre Almeida missed several bunnies in the first, David Rivers one (when he got absolutely mugged and thrown aside) and Ray Gallegos couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat (0-13, which will never happen again for him).

With all that said, Nebraska still scored a respectable 64 points and got fairly good shots.

I give the dreaded "Co-Player of the Game" again to both Shavon Shields (19 and 13 in 40 minutes, according to the box score, though I could have sworn he came out once) and Dylan Talley (28 points in 31 minutes).

Shields would probably be Player of the Game 1A and Talley 1B but I couldn't leave either out.

    DEFENSE: B

Tom Izzo said after the game that Nebraska is really good at shutting down the dribble drive. That isn't always true but it sure was tonight.

While Michigan State did score 73 and shoot 51%, which are both numbers that will get Nebraska beat on just about any night in existance, the Huskers were still good on "D". Michigan State made most open shots and even some contested ones but even more than that, they got several of those points off of offensive rebounds and extra possessions, so the defense itself was better than those numbers indicate.

Gotta give props to the Spartans, who had an answer every single time it seemed the Huskers were about to take a lead. They ALWAYS made a key shot. ALWAYS had an answer. That's what good teams do on the road.

They also made 10 of their first 11 FT's and made 23-29 (79%) for the game, which was a HUGE difference.

    REBOUNDING: D

Nebraska was out rebounded by eighteen (42 to 24). That is truly bad.

However, to NU's credit, they did secure 11 offensive boards of their own.

Obviously major kudos again to Shields for grabbing 13 Rodman's.

Hard to be upset at NU tonight when MSU has superior athletes and size, plus they can throw Husker players around as if they're rag dolls, and never be called for fouls.

    BALL HANDLING: A

7 turnovers to 9 assists. You'd like to see the assists higher but the turnover number is perfect.

Once again, I thought Benny Parker played well and continues to improve. His numbers are nothing spectacular (2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assists, 2 turnovers in 15 minutes) but I feel like anyone with an eye for basketball can't deny he is getting better and showing potential. I don't understand the hate for him around here that many continue to demonstrate.

    COACHING: A

I'm not afraid to admit it. I have a man crush on Tim Miles. If he and I were on the Titanic and it was sinking, I'd send him on the life boat. (Too soon?)

Seriously, this guy has me jazzed up beyond belief about the future of this program. He has winner written all over him. He's got limitless energy. He can relate to his players and potential players. He can recruit. He can win over a room and fan base. And most of all, he can flat out coach.

He fights for his players. He works it hard on the sidelines. Boundless energy. Makes adjusments in game. Knows how to motivate. On and on and on.

I also dropped $120 tonight on the grey coaches sweat suit he always wears tonight so I'm even more stoked.

    OVERALL GRADE: B+

Nebraska went toe to toe (for 30 minutes) with a legit Top 10 team who I thought played pretty well. That is a good sign.

They did this with essentially six players (since Almeida didn't show up) and with Gallegos having the worse shooting night of the season/his career.

Yes, I'd say the future looks bright.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: DYLAN TALLEY & SHAVON SHIELDS

2012-2013 PLAYER OF THE GAME RESULTS:

    RAY GALLEGOS - 9

    DYLAN TALLEY - 7

    BRANDON UBEL - 5

    SHAVON SHIELDS - 4

    DAVID RIVERS - 3

    JORDAN TYRANCE - 1

Dave, you're not the only person with a man crush on Miles.  During postgame interviews, Tom Izzo said this about Coach Miles:  "I just think he's the guy for your program."  "This guy has got energy.  I've been on the road with him in recruiting.  He's phenominal.  He's got a great personality.  And I think he's a damn good coach.  It's hard to have all those things and still be a damn good coach."

I'm counting the days until I never have to watch Andre Almeida play basketball. There I said it.

    And Gallegos

Perhaps he can be your new Sek Henry, Coug.

Minnesota might not want to watch Ray play again, but for a different reason.  How soon we critics forget.

Izzo might be slightly biased since he gets to fly on Husker One.

At six minutes a game, we are not watching much of Andre this year.  We need the big guy, but his game seems to have been weighed down a bit.

    Pun intended?

He's a mismatch, though typically against us.

At best he clogs up the lane on defense and is able to flip in balls down low.

At worst he's hooking up airballs and his human fouling machine.

All we can do is throw him in there every game to see which guy we have on any given night.

Yup...that said, I really am not comfortable being negative towards college players.  But Andre simply appears to be playing the season out...and that...is disappointing.

I would trip the Offense to a C.  Yes we got open looks but at some point you have to make those shots to get a better grade.

I would give the Rebounding an F.  Way to many extra chances that were converted to points.

When was the last time CWG didn't intend a pun?  I mean, seriously.

We didn't have a chance on the boards yesterday.  Nix and Payne are a touch match-up for reasonably assembled teams, much less ones with only one quality post player.

Hard to believe some coaches and broadcasters were saying Almeida is "NBA good" when he first arrived. That seems like two lifetimes ago.

He's well over his listed weight.  How would he be if he was 290?  Would he be at least JBD good?

JBD had an actual low post game & could score when you gave it to him on the block. AA, (not to harsh on the kid) has such limited basketball skills, I don't think it would matter if he was 190.
