Huskers Open Five-Game Home Stand with Utah State

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to Pinnacle Bank Arena to open a five-game home stand, when the Huskers take on Utah State Sunday.

Tip-off between the Huskers and the Aggies is set for 2 p.m.

Nebraska slipped to 6-2 on the season with a 75-62 loss at No. 18 North Carolina in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It marked the first back-to-back losses by Nebraska since losing at No. 8 Penn State and at home to Illinois last season. That marked the only time last season the Huskers lost back-to-back contests.

Two-time All-American Jordan Hooper led four Huskers in double figures with 18 points and nine rebounds. Hooper, moved to No. 8 on the Nebraska career scoring list with 1,846 points. Hooper needs 13 points to catch former Husker All-American Anna DeForge in seventh (1,859) and 21 points to match All-American Nicole Kubik (1,867) at No. 6 on Nebraska’s career scoring list. Hooper also needs just six rebounds to become the third Husker in history to reach the 1,800-point, 900-rebound plateaus for her career.

Utah State brings a high-powered offense to Pinnacle Bank Arena. Second-year coach Jerry Finkbeiner has his Aggies averaging nearly 85 points per game. Utah State features a pair of dynamic guards in senior Jennifer Schlott (24.0 ppg) and Makenlee Williams (20.1 ppg). A play-making point guard, the 5-6 Schlott is also averaging 6.1 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Williams, a 5-11 sophomore, is Utah State’s best shooter from long range, burying 18 threes through the first seven games.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Jr. - F - 6.6 ppg

    23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Jr. - F - 13.3

    35 - Jordan Hooper - 6-2 - Sr. - F - 20.1

    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - So. - G - 12.4

    1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Jr. - G - 7.5

    Utah State Aggies

    2 - Elise Nelson - 5-9 - Jr. - G - 4.9

    3 - Jennifer Schlott - 5-6 - Sr. - G - 24.0

    21 - Makenlee Williams - 5-11 - So. - G - 20.1

    50 - Ingridas Strikas - 6-1 - Jr. - G/F - 8.9

    44 - Franny Vaaulu - 6-2 - Jr. - F - 10.6

Nebraska ranks among the top 10 nationally with an average home attendance of 5,946 per game. The Huskers have drawn six of the top 12 largest non-conference home crowds in school history this season, including a record 9,750 vs. UCLA.

Utah State comes to Lincoln with a 5-2 record after an 81-71 loss at South Dakota. The Huskers play South Dakota December 21st.

Nebraska and Utah State will be meeting for the first time.

Strange game. Not sure I've ever seen a team have 2 players pick up 4 fouls in the first half. Might be the fastest team to put it's opponent in the double bonus in the first half.

Great games by Hoop and Cady. Sample, after playing well the last two games, was lost today. 25 Husker turnovers were a problem; many had nothing to do with the trapping defense. Havers' lack of strength is going to be a problem this year. Wish we could have redshirted her.

Huskers win it by twenty 95-75. Jordan Hooper leads the Huskers with 33 points and 14 rebounds and amazingly enough not once did she shoot it from behind the arc. Emily C. contributes with a double double of her own 16 points 10 boards, 7 assists. Theriot knocks down 11 and dishes out 8 assists. Little Sadie Murren with 8 points and good hustle. I also thought Brandie Jeffery came off the bench and gave us good minutes.

Turnovers abundant!!  Rachel Theriot had way-way too many! Utah St took a page out of Illinois playbook from last season and like that game the Huskers struggled with the trapping defense. Seems like they're just not thinking at times out there especially offensively trying to get everyone on the court on the same page.

Sounds like Katie Simon is gon-zo, leaving us with 10 players. Can't really blame her she never got to play!

Ramerceri came off the bench before Tvrdy.

I know Katie hadn't played much to this point but we could've really used her in conference play. If in fact she did leave, that hurts. Ally would be the only front court substitute. Not sure she is quite ready for those types of minutes. We could be one injury away from a disastrous season. I hope for the best!

Simon leaving the team is disappointing. Always thought she would get there and stay as a critical piece off the bench. :(

Figured this was her year to make that step.

    Best of luck to her.

What has happened that has caused Tvrdy to be last off the bench? Sorry, haven't seen them play in person yet. Has she slipped behind everyone else?

Murren shoots it way better than Tvrdy.  She can make the spot up jump shot on ball rotation when Hoop and Cady get doubled.   Hannah is strong and has long arms as adefender at the 2, but is slow and her shot is very flat. Both are good kids but are marginal for this level.

Allie's going to have to get a lot tougher before conference play starts up because she's going to get pushed around under the bucket if she doesn't.  With Katie S now gone she's going to get a lot more minutes, hopefully she can make major improvements with every game she plays. I thought Brandi played her best game of the year today and believe me we need that.

With Simon leaving that will force Sample to help out in the post when there is foul trouble.  Theriot may get run down as the season goes on as she is playing a lot of minutes.  Team is very thin in the post. (no pun intended)

Thin everywhere.  I just can't understand how we only took one player the year we signed Theriot, and no one really ready to play from this year's freshmen class.  And we try to make it with only 10 players.

Havers might get a little tougher by conference season, but it will take the offseason to really improve her strength.

Not sure many noticed but Ramaceri played the high post in her limited minutes.

Some other tidbits from todays game:

Jordan Hooper with 33 points this afternoon advanced two spots on the Husker all-time scoring chart. She moved into 6th place passing Anna DeForge in the first half and than overtaking Nicole Kubik the second. She now has 1,879 career points with her sites set on #5 held by Keira Hardy with 1,930 points. She also became the fourth Husker to record 900+ rebounds on her way to a 1,000.

    4,494 in attendance.

Utah State coach Jerry Finkbiener is in his second season at the school. He got the job two years ago beating out our own Sunny Smallwood.

And we are the better for that, But I guess there is always a better coach to get if she does leave. And she is now associate head coach fwtw i guess.
