Huskers Hit Road for Top 20 Showdown at North Carolina

The Nebraska women’s basketball team hits the road for the second time this season, traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., Wednesday to take on No. 18 North Carolina in a top-20 battle in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Tip-off between theHuskers and Tar Heels is set for 5 p.m.

Nebraska slipped to 6-1 on the season with a 76-72 loss to Washington State. The setback snapped the Huskers’ 10-game winning streak against Pac-12 Conference foes. NU owns wins over UCLA and Utah this season. North Carolina, which also owns a win over UCLA (78-68) this year, also suffered a loss to an unranked Pac-12 foe over the weekend. The Tar Heels dropped a 94-81 overtime decision to Arizona State in their second game of the Cancun Challenge.

The game between the Huskers and Tar Heels will showcase two of the nation’s most explosive front lines. North Carolina carries a 6-2 record into its Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchup with Nebraska.

The Tar Heels own five lopsided wins and won hard-fought 78-68 victory at UCLA. However, the young Tar Heels also have suffered an 81-65 loss to No. 4 Tennessee and most recently dropped a 94-81 overtime decision to Arizona State.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with North Carolina 1-0.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Jr. - F - 6.1 ppg

    23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Jr. - F - 14.3

    35 - Jordan Hooper - 6-2 - Sr. - F - 20.4

    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - So. - G - 12.4

    1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Jr. - G - 7.0

    North Carolina Tar Heels

    1 - Stephanie Mavunga - 6-3 - Fr. - F - 14.8

    34 - Xylina McDaniel - 6-2 - So. - F - 10.5

    2 - Latifah Coleman - 5-9 - Jr. - G - 3.1

    11 - Brittany Rountree - 5-9 - Jr. - G - 5.1

    23 - Diamond DeShields - 6-1 - Fr. - G - 16.8

Jordan Hooper is closing in on becoming just the third player in Nebraska history with 1,800 points and 900 rebounds. She needs 15 points to catch Debra Powell at No. 8 (1,843) on Nebraska’s all-time scoring list. Hooper, who ranks No. 4 on NU’s career rebound list, needs 15 rebounds to reach the 900-rebound mark. She heads to North Carolina with 1,828 points and 885 career rebounds.

Emily Cady is the only Husker to score in double figures in all seven games.

Tear’a Laudermill has averaged 10.3 points and 4.3 rebounds over the last three games. Since joining the starting lineup, she is averaging 8.3 points and 4.3 boards per game.

    No bench again tonight.

We got to find some consistent shooting and fast from someone other than Hooper. That 19-2 NC run when Hooper had to sit for fouls the first half was beyond embarrassing for a top 25 ranked team. I lost count on all the air balls we've put up tonight.

Why won't Sample shoot when she has a shot she has to shot it just to get the other team to play some honest D

Sample misses a ton of shots. As a freshman that is understandable, but she's a junior and it's kind of ridiculous.

Might be she misses but don't you think that her just shooting would make the opponent have to guard her.

I was only able to listen to the first half.  No Hooper looks to be bad news for the Huskers.  Cady wasn't much of a factor tonight.  However, it was at Carmichael and it will be a good developmental experience for this team.  The team needs to make a statement against Utah St. and Creighton and build up some momentum, depth and confidence prior to the conference race.

The Huskers next opponent Utah State who is currently on the third leg of a 6 game road swing lost to Amy Gusso-Williams' South Dakota Coyote team another future Husker opponent tonight in Vermillion 81-71.

Utah State (6-2) is averaging 84 points a game. They beat Utah a few weeks ago 77-61.

Couldn't help myself. Went to the Hawkeye website and looked at their stats through 10 games. Kastanek comes off the bench for 12.5 minutes per game averaging 4.7 points and 1.6 rebounds. She has had 12 assists, 11 turnovers, and seven steals while committing 16 fouls.

The assists to turnover ratio mighty good. ;):D
