Huskers Return to Devaney Center Tuesday to Battle Bearkats

The Nebraska women's basketball team returns to the Bob Devaney Sports Center to take on Sam Houston State on Tuesday night. Tip-off between the Huskers and Bearkats is set for 7:05 p.m., and tickets are on-sale now at Huskers.com.

Nebraska will look to rebound from its first loss of the season, a 60-55 setback at South Dakota State in Brookings on Sunday.

A bounce-back game will not be easy though against the Bearkats. Sam Houston State returns four starters and nine letterwinners from a team that went 18-12 in 2011-12, includng 12-4 in the Southland Conference. The Bearkats advanced to the second round of the preseason WNIT. SHSU will be the third Husker opponent in five games to earn a postseason berth a year ago, joining South Dakota State (NCAA) and Temple (WNIT).

Sam Houston State comes to Lincoln with a 1-2 record. Britni Martin, a 6-0 senior forward, leads the Bearkats with 16.7 points per game. Angela Beadle, a 6-3 sophomore forward, has added 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, while 6-0 senior forward Sequeena Thomas has added 5.0 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest.

Huskers go to 4-1with a 85-72 win over Sam Houston. We looked a whole lot better than our last game out, the starters anyway. And we looked more co adhesive as a team.

Huskers jump out to a 31 point lead and then started putting in bench players and see the lead dwindle down to 11 toward the end of the game. Thank goodness we have Lindsey Moore! Zeroes played like an all american tonight but she seems to do that every game. The Huskers need the bench players to produce positive results when they come in.

But what a difference two days make for Emily! It looked like she took her South Dakota performance to heart and vowed to come out completely different than last Sunday! She looked good tonight! The Huskers other than Lindsey struggled from behind the arc though. Poor Sadie just couldn't get one to fall. Hope she keeps shooting though. She's getting better with each game she plays on both ends of the court.

Depth underneath might creep up on us and hurt us later on down the line especially in the rebounding department.

Hooper had 19 pts and 10 boards. Cady threw in 18 and grabbed 6 rebounds and Lindsey had 13 points 5 assists and 6 boards. They jump on a big ole jet airliner tomorrow afternoon and head to LA to face the Trojans Friday afternoon.

I also think Katie Simon is showing improvement. She had 6 points and 4 rebounds in 11 minutes of play tonight. She needs more work on the defensive side and she seems to be a little turnover prone, but she seems to have shown improvement from the start of the season. She's going to have to keep improving though, as she will be counted on more and more to spell relief for the trees underneath because I'm not to sure Meghin Williams sore foot will allow her to play that many minutes going forward. It would be a really big plus should she start producing quality minutes going forward.

Row 6, good report. What I find frustrating is that our choices for post players coming off the bench are someone who can't practice nor play extended minutes due to a chronic foot problem; someone coming off of back surgery who is not strong enough to play in the paint against good competition; and Simon, who is undersized and limited in what she can bring to the table. It would be a shame to waste a fantastic senior point guard and an All-American talent in Hooper because we don't have ANY depth in the post. I just can't fathom how Connie didn't sign a post player in last year's class, which included only Theriot, and belatedly Murren. We knew then that Williams' foot would always be a problem, and what we had with Maurer and Simon.
