No. 16 Huskers Hit the Road to Clash with Cougars in Pullman

The No. 16 Nebraska women’s basketball team makes its first road trip of the season, when the Huskers head to Pullman to battle Washington State on Wednesday night. Tip-off between the Huskers (2-0) and the Cougars (2-0) at Friel Court at Beasley Coliseum is set for 10 p.m.

Both teams enter the mid-week clash after building early season momentum with impressive weekend wins. Nebraska rolled to a 100-65 win over Pepperdine in its season opener, The Big Red closed a successful weekend with an 83-49 run past Alcorn State

Washington State’s opening weekend was at least as impressive. The Cougars ran to a 76-60 win over No. 22 Dayton on Friday, before sprinting to an 84-34 win over neighboring Idaho State.

The Cougars didn’t need a top-25 win to have Nebraska’s full attention. Last season, WSU upended the Huskers, 76-72.

Tia Presley and Lia Galdeira combined for 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the win. Last season, those two dynamic guards combined to average 37.5 points and 9.2 boards per game to lead Washington State to the WNIT. The duo helped WSU to a 17-17 overall record and a 9-9 Pac-12 finish. They have continued to grow under Coach June Daugherty, combining to average 46.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game on opening weekend.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Sr. - F

    23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Sr. - F

    1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Sr. - G

    13 - Brandi Jeffery - 5-7 - Sr. - G

    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Jr. - G

    Washington State Cougars

    34 - Mariah Cooks - 6-1 - Jr. - F

    23 - Shalie Dheensaw - 6-4 - Sr. - C

    3 - Lia Galdeira - 5-11 - Jr. - G

    5 - Tia Presley - 5-10 - Sr. - G

    11 - Dawnyelle Awa - 5-9 - Jr. - G

Nebraska owns a 4-1 lead in the all-time series with Washington State.

Emily Cady has 1,072 points, 802 rebounds, 228 assists and 110 steals. She ranks 10th in NU history with 86 career blocks. No player in Husker history has 1,000 points, 900 rebounds, 200 assists, 100 steals and 100 blocks.

Tear’a Laudermill has produced double digits in 15 of her last 19 games

Defend the three, control the boards, make the gimmies, and get 24+ points from the bench......and I like our chances.

The Huskers have the depth this year to defend the three, unlike last year where they had to pick their poison so to speak.

That, and maybe our speed at guard may get more points going to the basket in the half court game.....and the speed can create some fast break points...T, Rachel, Brandi, Romeo, and others...... all the guards may be a new and more used phase of our game...tonight and all year.

We may well be a bit more of a 3 shooting team too. We just may be a different kind of team offensively this year.

We'll also have some speed at wing also that can be used to our advantage.

To bad that the stripes are controlling this game. They need to pull their head out of their arse and call the game right. But the Huskers also have to get busy on the boards, to many second chances for WSU.

    Huskers win it 82-61!!

First off that was absolutely the best game I ever saw Hailie Sample play. Moving her to the four is turning out to be the best move of the year so far. Huskers played like a top 15 team tonight. Tee and Brandi were fantastic. Emily and Hailie both just missing getting a double double. Emiily fouls out or she would have had one.

Huskers came out the second half on a mission especially defensively and excuted to a tee on offense and made the Cougars look like a high school team. All and all just a tough, tough win.

I thought T reverted back to her old self at times tonight, But when it was money time she was money. Ans WSU was so worried about Cady that when she got the ball the double team came and wahla  Sample was open for the give me.

We were aided by some ridiculously poor shooting by WSU.  I lost count of how many wide open 3s they missed.  I realize some of that was by design on our end in determining who not to guard, but 2-27 is crazy.  And most of the misses were just awful bricks.  Good road win, especially with what's coming up on the schedule.

I stayed up to listen, and there was definitely grousing about the refs from my favorite radio announcers.

And you even made the broadcast in the first half, Noah!  A good shout out from Matt.

Listened to the entire game, when Jeff G. wasn't interrupting Matt C's play by play.  I was hoping for more depth on the squad, which may still develop.  Romeo and Havers were the main subs and, correct me if I'm wrong, Kalenta didn't play until the 2nd half.  Maybe when Chandler S. returns  another player will be available.

    Sample is merely a player.

Anya played the first half but not the second, only had a 6 player roation the second half until late when the game was put away.

It seems to me that Sample isn't hesitating to shoot the ball this year.  Last year there were several times that she had an open shot but didn't take it, and there were some games where we really needed her to take the shot.  But this year seems different for her.  Glad to see it, she is a beast!

I agree chode about her needing to take shots last year and just passed them up. Looks like Hallie put in the work over the summer as did Allie who if she gets that hook going oh my. Need to get Kareem in to show her how to make them.

After watching the game again I noticed that on one Husker possession where the Huskers drove to the hoop and got a charge called on them. If you watch closely the ref started to call a block her arms started toward her hips then stop and made the charge call. And the other thing I seen as I watched the game live was in the second half when there was a break of any kind the WSU players had hands on knees and the one guard was always squatting, It didn't look like they where very well conditioned.
